How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
Ridge height is a major factor when determining if a space can be converted into a habitable room or not, the open space after additional insulation and flooring is installed will determine how useable the space is. It is best to draw this out to scale first.
Stair positioning is also another key factor, as the footprint of a staircase uses a reasonable amount of a room, and sometimes a room requires sacrificing to allow this to happen. Head height requires consideration as the existing roof slopes may constrain where stairs are positioned and may require a dormer window to allow for extra room where necessary.
Fire escape is the third major factor when it comes to loft conversions. Safe passage to the first floor (if a 2 storey house) will be required so fire doors and some existing windows may need to be replaced as well.
Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?
Accurately measuring space is key to whether a conversion will work or not. Once we carry out a survey of an area, we can draw this to a 1:1 scale and then alter the drawings to show our proposals. There are 3 main areas to consider: Fire escape, Useable space and stair positioning from the lower level.
A new supporting floor structure is almost always required as there will be additional loads from furniture etc, the existing roof trusses or rafters may require updating, and will definitely require additional insulation.
What do you love most about your job?
Turning our clients dreams into reality with our ability to see our clients' visions and provide CAD designs or 3D model and renders can be the most rewarding feeling
What inspired you to start your own business?
It gives me the opportunity to be flexible with my time and still focus on my customers requirements
Why should our clients choose you?
We offer fixed pricing and will be there as long as you want us, whether it's just drawings or full project management.
Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.
Most of our design work is carried out remotely, as it requires focussed attention without distraction. We do however, meet clients on site in the initial stages and we regularly inspect builds when we are involved in project management. We are still available to discuss our clients needs with them when necessary.
What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
Efficient time spent discussing the project (outdoors wherever posisble) or from a safe distance, we will wear a mask and avoid physical contact. We carry disposable rubber gloves and hand sanitizer in preparation for site visits. If we are carrying out a survey, clients must remain at a safe distance. In practice, we also use hand sanitizer and wash hands regularly.
