We recently completed layout and design on a complicated project with the very talented Ali Beckett. The project was an educational book for children in Egypt;
its topic: animal welfare awareness. The complexity of the project's layout and design was due to three factors: my perfectionism, the mirroring of the English and Arabic halves of the book, and the strange margins specified by the Egyptian printers.
Ali dealt with all those challenges creatively, patiently, and inventively - a consummate professional, and kind to a neophyte in the field of such design as I was. Her beautiful design of our book and posters made the information come alive and vibrant. Describe your creative process.
I like to talk to the customer and get a feel for the style they are after. It is useful if they already have publications or a website for me to see these to get a sense of the style and colours that reflect their business / organisation. Otherwise, the customer can give me examples of styles they like and we can work from there. It is usually a to and fro process and will take a couple of rounds, especially with new customers, to make sure you get the end result you want.
What information do you need from a client before you can start work?
A clear brief for the job in hand.
Text, logos and photos.
I can help with editing or copywriting if required and if you don't have great photos then don't worry I can help find the perfect fit using stock images if necessary.
What do you love most about your job?
I love working with a variety of customers, getting to know them and their business and helping to take the stress out of the design process. It should be fun - not a problem!
What inspired you to start your own business?
I enjoy the freedom of working from home and managing my own time. I think this way I can deliver a better service for customers and make sure everything is done with deadlines as necessary.
Why should our clients choose you?
I aim to make the design process as straightforward as possible. It should be an enjoyable journey between the customer and the designer hopefully building a lasting relationship that helps your business move forward.
