A nice place to visit apart from the 2 old parking nazi's at the entrance which really let the place down as soon as you enter. They are the first people you see and should at least be able to crack a smile and be welcoming like everyone else at the venue. These 2 guys are terribly rude and should just retire away from public duties. More...

This was my first ever professional cricket match, a short-form T20 Vitality Blast game between the hosts, Essex, and Middlesex. Essex opened the batting with one chap who didn't appear to have the build of a professional sportsman, but who leathered the ball to all corners of the ground scoring lots of fours and one six before being caught. His replacement - caught behind the very first ball. Such is the chaos - and the fun - of short form cricket. Some purists say it's an abomination, but it attracted the best part of a full house. Normal county games tend to get very low attendances. The best part, for me, was the crowd reaction. Fours and the occasional six brought raucous cheering and much waving of bright pink cards emblazoned with 4 and 6 on each side. Dropped catches were greeted with a loud roar. Gaps in play were filled with quick blasts of music.More like an American sports event than a more sedate British one. I was surprised just how much to-ing and fro-ing went on to purchase the eye-wateringly expensive food and drink. Some folk were guzzling alcohol like it was about to run out. All very good fun, scoring at just under 8 and over, wickets tumbling, sun shining instead of the forecast rain. What's not to like? Google needs to update the ground's name - now it's the Ambassador Cruise Line Ground. More...

Short walk from bus and train stations next to park and market. Ground has plentiful food and drink options and a variety of seating areas for watching the action( including for wheelchair users). Gates opened an hour before the start of the county game but may be earlier for some one day games. Hot drinks and breakfast baps available but keep an eye on the players warming up so you don't get a cricket ball in your coffee. Enjoyed a stroll around the outfield during the lunch interval . Large choice of places to go after play ends (The Woolpack pub and Nandos recommended). Multi storey carpark next to the ground. More...
