This is a totally unsolicited review. Duane doesn't even know I am writing this. Also it may seem strange that another dog trainer would write a review of another trainer but I have known Duane for over 20 years. Duane is one of the few dog trainers in the Los Angeles area that I respect. He does what he says he is going to do and helps his clients have the dog that they have always wanted. Duane keep up the good work. Daryl Young More...

Wow, by far the most amazing and informative trainer I've had the chance to work with, Duane was absolutely a life save the first session alone was all we needed for our dog to go from the worst to best dog, he was such a rough walker that my hands were cut raw, and now I can walk him with little to no hold on leash, I left wanting to cry tears of pure joy and relief! Worth every penny not expensive at all for what you get, and seriously by far the most humble and kind trainer I've met! He will awnser any questions, he listens to all concerns, he takes all the time needed to make sure you understand what's going on, he breaks down the lessons so you get the way dogs think itr truly amazing and if you get a chance to get his book GET IT SUCH AN AMAAZING READ AND SO EASY TO READ!! Wow just got done with the most amazing training session with Duane, went in for the first session and left with everything I needed to handle my dog who has been walking all over me and dragging me on walks to the point of my hands being raw, after one simple session my dog now knows how to sit, lay down, heal and walk on my side without pulling me, he gave me his book for further information and literally took as much time explaining every thing he taught me why it mattered and how dogs think, I went in nervous and skeptical and left a full blow happy dog owner and relieved person, I'm so grateful for Duane and his help with me and saint! ! My dog Rocky had some issues with barking, pulling the lease when I walked him. So I sought out the help of Duane. He was in the boarding training for two weeks, and he has made such 360' change in Rocky. I now enjoy taking Rocky to public places and for walks. He gently walks besides me with out pulling me every direction, like before! He also has calmed down so much and doesn't bark as much. I'm glad we were able to find Duane and get Rocky the help he needed. Life is much easier with a trained dog. If you are seeking help for your dog, trust Duane to help. He needed everything. Obedience training, aggression training, separation anxiety training, leash, etc. After the two week program he came back a very well behaved dog, but still the playful Jasper we love at home. Regarding Duane Overturf's response to our post on March 3rd regarding our post on February 19th:Duane failed to mention that we were very concerned about our puppy Jax being kept separate from the other dogs as he was not fully vaccinated yet. Since we were adamant and expressed concern - he promised to keep our dog Jax safe from exposure to other dogs he was training. Had he kept his promise to us, this so called "accident" would never have occurred.We believe our failing was giving Jax to Duane without any paperwork being filled out or a walk-through of his home/facility that Jax would live in for 3 weeks. Maybe if we would have seen how Jax would have been kept for these 3 weeks, we would have never left him there.Please take the time to walk through his facility and make your own judgement if this is the right situation for your puppy. READ THIS BEFORE TAKING YOUR PUPPY TO DUANE OVERTURF!!!We took our 10 week old puppy Jax to Duane Overturf for a 3 week training. On the 10th day of the 3 week training, we received a phone call from Duane stating that our puppy was "GONE". After back and forth conversation trying to understand what he was saying, he stated that our puppy got killed by a larger dog he was training.Duane admitted that out of sheer negligence on his part, our puppy was attached by another dog on his premise and he couldn't get to Jax fast enough. We are heartbroken. From what we understand, the larger dog knocked over the pen that our dog was in, trapped and killed him. From what we were told, there were two small dogs in a pen next to a pen of large dogs. We obviously have so many questions that will never be answered. Why were the small dogs anywhere near the big dogs. Why were the pens so weak that the big dogs could knock them over.....we will never know.Our experience with Duane from the beginning was odd - but because of the great reviews posted on Yelp, we ignored them which we shouldn't have. I am posting this today to hopefully save other people from making the mistake we did in putting their trust in Duane Overtruf.The day we dropped Jax off at Duane's house, we thought it was odd he didn't invite us in to see where Jax would be staying. He didn't ask us any questions about Jax - and he didn't have any paperwork for us to fill out. When we left, I wondered if he even knew how to get a hold of me in case of an emergency. I also had no proof that I dropped Jax off.Please don't be as trusting as we were with Duane Overturf. Maybe he was a great trainer at some point in his career - but our puppy Jax is dead because of his negligence which he fully admits to. More...

Duane is the best!  I took my dog, Samson, to him for aggression & behavior issues. We were planning to move and we had to get Sam to not misbehave. Otherwise, we were going to take him back to Best Friends as we couldn't tolerate his misbehavior anymore. The day I took Sam to Duane, Sam to a bite out of Duane's pants! I was horrified and thought it wasn't going to work out. Instead, Duane instructed me what to do and we got Sam inside and eventually even got Sam to sit by Duane, like they were lifelong friends!  That was in only 30 minutes!  After the 10 days we left Sam with Duane, he was new dog. We left our one year old rescue with Duane for just under two weeks while we were on vacation. Before Duane, our dog was not enjoyable to take on walks because she would pull the entire time and lunge towards other dogs, in an effort to play. Now, she has learned to heel and walk nicely. She won't even go to the bathroom on the grass on her own without first getting permission- just as Duane taught her. She is overall more calm when we are home and does not jump all over our guests anymore. She sits, stays and lies down on command. If you want a well trained dog, go to Duane! More...

I was referred to Duane after my dog went after another dog and pulled me down and dragged me almost a foot on the ground in the process.  I was seriously considering giving her back, despite over 3 years of loving and living with her and thousands of dollars of working with other trainers. Very good trainers.  My dog is my PTSD service dog so it's more than giving up a pet. After being bitten at a dog park a couple of times and a couple of near misses at grocery stores with dogs that had no business being there, she got dog reactive.  Obviously, a dog reactive dog can't be a service dog anymore. After Duane worked with her, she is even better than before she got reactive. Two days ago, we checked into a doctor's office and there was a little Sheltie emotional support dog less than 2 feet away. Lexie was curious, but sat next to me where she was supposed to. We waited a long time to be called, Lexie laid down under my chair and  stayed, exactly as she was supposed to. That night, my neighbor's dog got away from her son. He does not like big dogs and was biting at Lexie. She did not lose control until his teeth connected with her, and even then, she did not really, because she didn't hurt him. (She's a Rottweiler, if she'd meant to, she would have). The next day we went to the vet and she was back to curious but staying with me when seeing other dogs.  Bravo Duane!!  Thank you!!! More...

Duane is sensational and I can't thank him and his lovely, warm hearted wife enough. In just 7 days, they helped our rescue pit bull Minnie become calm, non reactive, and obedient. She was always sweet, but a nightmare to walk (squirrels + cats) and had NO recall. She is our third dog, and now our most well behaved. (Again, in just 7 days). He doesn't lecture you or have that animal expert ego that I find very "me thinks the lady doth protest too much". He doesn't need it because he just is an expert who will help guide you and your dog to harmony.I had 2 NIGHTMARE experiences with other trainers, who almost made me feel like there was no hope integrating Minnie into our family. They used archaic training methods, and used processes that were taking MONTHS to work (not work) and quite honestly, I often wondered if they even liked dogs.Duane loves animals. The moment I dropped Minnie off, he allowed her to say hello the way she does, and was loving toward her, without launching into aggressively correcting her (had a trainer kick her back previously). Clearly there would be a time and place for correction that week.His BRILLIANT method makes more sense than any other dog training/behavior business model I've seen. Teach a dog to behave and thrive inside a loving home, as naturally as possible so the environment feels in line with the home they will be spending their life in. Sending your dog to a boarding kennel nothing like home makes no sense. My three dogs are sleeping on their respective dog beds in a calm living room and I have tears in my eyes.THIS is your guy. Wasn't her fault, she was just a dog doing what she knows.  So after she had bite all of us, I called the rescue people to ask for advice. That is the last person I would want Hazel to go back to. We decided to find a behavior trainer to work with Hazel. Just after our free evaluation, with the few tips Duane gave us. We are incredibly happy with Duane's board and training of our German Shepherd, Maya! Maya had a 10 day stay with Duane.  We were having issues with her dominant personality after having rescued her from a shelter. After a couple of weeks she was becoming very protective of our home and was nipping at people while they were walking around the house. She was also having freak outs on our walks whenever she would see other dogs walking on leash on the street. The only command she knew before sending her to Duane was sit. When we picked her up from Duane, she had learned all of the basic commands (sit, stay, heel, down & come). She was much better behaved and the freak outs mostly stopped. Due to us not knowing how to properly handle the situation, we asked Duane for help and he was incredibly helpful with supplemental training for us (the owners). I was worried about taking her to the dog park alone even though Duane said she's not aggressive towards other animals or people. He was kind enough to meet us at a dog park and show us how to handle her in a park. This was really helpful! We were also worried about the nipping of people at he house. We scheduled a follow appointment at our house when we were going to have +15 people over for a party. I would have probably had her on a leash all night for fear of her biting someone. When Duane showed up and Maya saw him she was so happy to see him! That says a lot! Once inside our backyard Duane set her free to roam around the party. Maya was such a good dog with everyone! She still had some of her instinctual herding instincts and tried nipping at people but Duane taught us to keep an eye on her and correct her whenever that happened. Duane also helped us look over our yard and suggested various ways we could setup a system to keep Maya from getting out and maybe getting herself hurt. All in all, we were incredibly impressed with Duane and his methods! Great guy and a great trainer!!! Totally recommend! More...

He would lunge at everyone and everything when I walked him, I was so anxious to even take him out around the block. I knew I had to make a decision to either get private training or take him back to the shelter. I brought in 2 other trainers before I found Duane. Both just sat on my couch and told me he was too aggressive to do any type of treat based training, etc. and that they couldn't help. I contacted Duane as a recommendation from a co-worker. On the first day, Bagel learned several commands, he didn't even know how to sit before Duane!! Every session, he improved. We conquered public areas, the dog park, and have started working on in-home aggression since Bagel gets particularly aggressive when someone comes in my home. We have a 10 month old english bulldog puppy who was highly rambunctious. He got very excited around other people and it was becoming impossible for me to control him on a leash as he grew bigger. I was often left with blisters on my fingers from pulling so hard on the leash to keep him from jumping on strangers. It was so embarrassing when we had company over because he would not stop jumping on company. We previously did 12 weeks of training classes with him at a big box store including private lessons, but we hadn't made too much progress. Matters became more complicated when we took in a 1 year old shepherd/husky mix rescue. We basically had to either separate them, or spend every minute standing over them and watching them so that their play didn't get too rough. We became extremely overwhelmed and desperate. We found Duane online based on his reviews. After speaking with him first on the phone, we decided to move forward with a 2 week board and train program. We were a bit nervous, but when the dogs came home they were so much more relaxed and calm around each other. Our bulldog puppy actually listens now. We are still in shock by how much better behaved they are now. We can now take them both out together on a leash and have them around other people. At home they are the best of friends. If they start to play a little too rough, a simple "no" calms them down. This has so dramatically improved the quality of our life. We enjoy them so much now, rather than constantly feeling overwhelmed. I highly recommend Duane to any frustrated doggy parent. More...

We basically just needed a little help with getting him to walk on a leash and some obedience training. We boarded him with Duane for a week. Duane was willing to work around our schedule for the week Oscar stayed with him. Duane kept in contact with me the entire time Oscar was with him and kept updating me on his progress. When we picked Oscar up he was a whole new man! He walks on a leash so well now! I know it seems silly to be so excited about a dog walking on a leash but it was very frustrating when I would go one way and he would go another. Duane made our lives a lot easier. He also taught him how to sit and go down. Duane taught him how to wait at the door and stay until I tell him to go out. Oscar does this about 50% of the time. Although, admittedly, it's because my husband and I don't enforce it on him enough. It is, of course, up to the dog owners to take what the trainer teaches and enforce it. Duane shared all his knowledge with my husband and I and told us how to enforce the training when we got home. We are so happy with Duane's help and support with our pup. Oreo is a 90 pound great dane/lab mix who was clearly abused before we adopted him. His go-to response has often been to attack other dogs before they attack him. We had 2 trainers before Duane, who both were helpful, but Duane was the first to remind us that it is okay to offer legitimate consequences to our dog. In the 4 sessions we had, we were actually able to test Oreo around other dogs EVERY time. That allowed for quicker success and allowed Duane to see how we needed to adjust our training. Our last session was at a dog park, and with the help of a muzzle and an electric collar, Oreo was able to play appropriately and had the BIGGEST smile on his face after. We ordered the electric collar for ourselves and are hoping for the same success with training him to get along with our cats. As with any dog trainer, success comes from your own practice and reinforcement at home, but Duane gave us the skills to continue to have progress one month after we stopped seeing him. After the sudden loss of our 14 year old Shiba Inu my husband talked me into getting a puppy.  I am not wired for puppies and travel for work and work from home when I am in town. Enter TANK.  While adorable and sweet he tested me daily.  Biting, jumping, pulling on walks, grabbing my shoes while they were on my feet, taking papers off my desk and running wild before eating them. We tried kennel training during the day but he would howl whenever he heard my voice making phone work out of the question.  We also have a 15 year old healthy but arthritic pug that was also not ready for Tank.  I wasn't equipped for him and our home was starting to feel too small.  After just one session with Duane, Tank became engaged and showed signs of focus.  After 2 sessions I became engaged along with him. We had hired another trainer that was treat based which may work well for dogs who are not a Shiba Inu.   When we left town for the holidays we didn't want to have our regular dog sitters come stay with our boys as Tank would just be too out of control and restless so we thought we would try Duane's overnight "boot camp".  Tank went for 2 weeks and the positive transformation is amazing.  He has always been a good boy but now he is an absolute joy. He's playful and joyful but engaged and aware of his "boundaries". Friends of ours 10 year old daughter (Tank's "Godmother") even said he is more fun to play with and is a "better" Tank.  I cannot explain my sense of relief. Sunny now actually listens to us and we can enjoy having him off leash in the park without fears that he won't come back when called.  Duane was very patient with us, sending us updates and photos/videos everyday (it was hard going three weeks without living with Sunny), and we were comfortable from the beginning that he knew what he was walking about.Note, you have to be willing to engage in some form of punishment as part of the training.  100% positive reinforcement is just not workable.   However, the e-collar and choke collar are not bad at all.  My husband and I tried them on ourselves and it's really not pain just an annoying feeling.Duane's book is also a great compliment to the training, which I recommend you purchase and read before your dog comes home from training.If you want a top trainer at a good price point and someone who is flexible in terms of methodology (he doesn't have a single way to do everything), Duane is the trainer for you! We are so thankful for Duane's help in training our dog, Sarge. Before training Sarge we had the following issues: - pulling during walks- biting family members for food- not listening when other dogs or people were around- being aggressive toward strangers - not coming when calledDuring our sessions Duane would demonstrate how to train Sarge. Then he would have each of us try while walking around the neighborhood (a natural environment for Sarge). He would make corrections as needed and then give us homework to work with Sarge in specific areas during the week until the following session. Duane is good about tailoring the sessions to the specific needs of your dog. By the end of our 4 sessions with Duane, Sarge has begun to listen to our commands. He will walk with us, come to us, stay even when other dogs or people are around, and his aggression has significantly decreased. Duane really trained my husband and me to train Sarge ourselves. He equipped us with the knowledge to continue to train our dog even after our sessions with him were over. We've talked with some people who do not want to use choke collars or shock collars with their dogs. We can attest that Duane is very kind to dogs - ours really likes him - and he uses the collars as tools to teach them what is "safe" and "unsafe" for their own protection. We highly recommend Duane to anyone looking to train their dogs to obey them and stay close to them in order to keep them and others safe. More...

Words can not express my gratitude as to how Duane transformed my dog form the beast he was. Now the dog can be part of the family as we wanted him to be. When I took Charlie in, in all honesty I did not expect much. Within the first 5 minutes Duane had the dogs pacing with him. After two weeks of not seeing my puppy today I want and picked up a dog that listens, is fun to walk with and is a joy to have around. There is much work to be done but I am just speechless  at how much Duane accomplished with in the two weeks he had Charlie the pit.Duane is an honest, highly experienced and above all a great person.Again, thank you for all you have done. Duane was amazing.  We adopted a beautiful but bossy shepherd mix and was having trouble integrating her into the family with the other two dogs.  Duane came over and not only got her trained in four sessions and settled in, but recognized that our littlest barkiest dog needed some help.  He has simple good sense advice on solving daunting dog issues.  He was extremely professional, kind, and arrived on time each week.  We worked together for four weeks and I can't recommend him highly enough.  He brought peace to our canine pack! We adopted a year old Golden Doodle and were looking for a trainer.  While our dog had a sweet personality, we knew nothing about his history, he had not been socialized well, was either a bit stubborn, ignored us when we called him, gave us 'the look' when he didn't want to stay, just walked away. .. and was suffering from separation anxiety.  We actually wondered if he had ever heard English or might be deaf. Duane was a pleasure to work with - he quickly got in touch, told us approximately how long he thought it might take to get Eli on track, and explained his approach.  He kept us updated via email, was very professional and personable.  He's a lovely person, clearly with lots of professional experience with dogs and cares greatly about getting your pet to be the best companion for your family.  You will feel comfortable with him & know your dog is in very good hands.When we picked up Eli he was a 'new dog', much calmer, listened to commands and socialized.  He takes the dogs to places like Costco, dog parks, etc.  He pointed out things to keep an eye out for with him - and told us he might do some 'testing'.  Duane followed up with a house call and we also had an outing with him at the dog park, where we had no prior experience.  He was good at teaching US and pointed out things we could do to make commands/walking, etc. work.I can't tell you how pleased we are and how excited we are to have the new, happy, trained Eli back with us!  Now, it's up to us to keep up Duane's good work, do call him! Duane is an exceptional dog trainer. After much research of other trainers in the area, Duane came highly recommended. We sent our 12 week old Aussie pup to him for board and training, and when he was returned - what a difference!  Having a 20 month old at home, we wanted to ensure that our pup would be mindful and obedient, as well as a great companion for our son as he grows up.  Duane did an excellent job and continues to assist us with the training.  I would highly recommend him for anyone looking for dog training. Duane is quite an amazing trainer. My three dachsunds are new dogs after doing his board and train package. When first contacting Duane my dogs were excessive barkers, whiners, jumped on people and furniture, rushed the door, and I could not walk them without them barking non-stop and lunging at every animal they saw. They now walk by our side all in a row in a particular order, do not pull, and barely bark. They sleep on the floor and do not jump on people and barely the furniture. There behavior is easy to correct now. I can actually bring them to the dog park and have them come when asked, and walk all three while pushing my toddler in the stroller. Before contacting him I was beyond overwhelmed, and now can enjoy my three dogs. He is still working with them, and will be coming to train them on my child's play date, which we are excited about. I fully recommend Duane without reservation. Beyond being an incredible trainer he is reliable, on time, and a very kind and personable guy. More...

Q&As

I love seeing people's faces when their dog starts listening to them. Hearing people rave about how well their dog is doing since starting training is the best reward of all.... after getting paid that is. (-;

I started in high school working with dogs and one thing led to another. It helped that I was a natural at training and that I had parents that were supportive of my interest. That interest led to getting a job working at a kennel and learning from the ground up about training from many great trainers.

I am dedicated to your dog and you. I have spent my life learning about my craft and to this day I continue to attend learning events offered by highly respected behaviorists as well as teaching new trainers how to be better at their new career. My experience spans 4 decades and thousands of training situations with every kind of dog imaginable.
