How can someone tell if their Garage is suitable for conversion?
Usually you will be looking for the following factors, such as:
Is the roof height greater than 2.4 meters to enable a ceiling to be installed?
Are the walls, floor and roof structurally sound. Do the foundations need reinforcing and does the floor need raising above ground level.
Is there any damp that needs correcting prior to plasterboard installation?
Do the walls and ceiling space need insulating say for example if you are converting the garage space into an office or garden room?
Run us through the different stages of the Garage conversion process - what's involved?
Depending on what the space is going to be used for, so for example an office space, then initially the sub floor may need reinforcing and leveling, plus sealing. Any windows for extra light and ventilation should be installed, including ant access doors. Next walls, ceiling and floors will need insulating with a suitable insulation. Walls may need studding out. If the room space is large it may be that you would want to install a partition wall to create maybe a WC or storage area. Next install any first fix electrical or plumbing works prior to plaster-boarding. All skirting boards architraves and window cill boards and trims to be installed. All plastering works to be carried out next and then 2nd fix electrics and plumbing.
All decorating to complete job, then carpet and furnishing.
How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
When you measure from the bottom of the ridge timber to the top of the ceiling joist you need to have at least 2.2m of usable space for the conversion to be suitable.
Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?
Depending on what type of loft conversion you need, so for example a roof light conversion where you don't alter or expand the existing space at all, the following steps are required:
Firstly install stairs to access the loft. An opening will be made to accommodate stairs. For a bedroom space, next install 1st fix electrics and or 1st fix plumbing. Next install insulation in walls floor and ceiling. Next install floorboards. Next fit roof lights. Fit plasterboard. Skim with plaster over new plasterboard. Next install 2nd fix electrics and or plumbing. Next install all architrave, skirting boards, doors and storage cupboards. Next decorating/painting and flooring and furnishings.
