Dog Training

I have always loved power breeds. My wife however was not so keen on them when we first got married. Peter and his boys have completely changed our lives with Winston. Owning a power breed is no joke and most people have no idea that owning one requires us as humans to be trained before handling a breed like a Staffie. Peter has a strong belief in training people first and not dogs in order to help us create strong, lasting relationships with our best friends. He has completely changed mine and my wife's perspective of what it means to be a dog owner and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND him as a trainer not only for power breeds but for all dog breeds. Patience and consistency is what is required when growing a connection with your dog and I guarantee Whyzdog are the people to get you there. More...

Dog Training

I highly recommend Peter-John for dog behavioral consulting and training. My husband and I had tried everything to stop our mini Dachshund from barking and nipping at anyone or anything that came close to her or myself with no success. We decided to consult Peter-John and I am so glad that we did. Peter-John is very understanding and took the time to explain to us why our Biscuit behaves the way she does and showed us how to introduce her to new people. At first it would take her a few meetings to get used to someone, but after working with Peter-John for nearly 6 months she takes to new people within 5 minutes. We are now starting to introduce her to other dogs. What I like most about Peter-John is that he doesn't train your dog for you - he instead gives you the skills to teach your dog. It has made an incredible difference in our lives and we will be continuing to work with Peter-John. I am no longer scared to take Biscuit out for a walk or have strangers come over to our place. I have been with WhyzDog since my dog Taeo came home and over the years what started off as a business relationship has turned into a friendship where we all feel like family.
I am not sure whether Taeo or I benefitted the most but we certainly achieved a great deal more than we expected.
From struggling to get Taeo to stay, I am now able to walk him off leash in the streets, entertain guests over including little babies without having to manage him.
A trip to the vet is a walk in the park as I often show off Taeos skills with my favourite being him walking up to the scale and sitting on it without being hassled.
At Whyzdog I have learned to understand dogs better and once you are able to you will start experiencing the miracles I have. Strangely enough I almost left after a few weeks in as I did not put in the effort but once I did the magic started.

So far very promising. Peter sounds like he knows his staff look forward to having our little puppy trained and well behaved.

Q&As

Helping people achieve results with their dog behaviour and training needs.

Trojan, a "problem" dog originally got me into training, which became a regular hobby. Seven years later a trainer asked me if I'd like to learn to to be a trainer and several years later he moved on and left the dog school to me. My local vet then asked if he could send "problem" dogs to me for training. During recovery from a serious illness I started researching alternate training methods and then subsequently completed basic and advanced dog behaviour diplomas and incorporated dog behaviour counselling (behaviour assessment and recommendation). In 2010 I left a corporate management position and started a local online pet food business together with full-time behaviour counselling and training.

Many trainers and behaviourists primarily focus on the dog and don't recognise or give sufficient attention to the dog's human companion. By drawing on academic studies, previous corporate management courses, personal training experience and studies in animal behaviour I attend to both the human and the dog in developing a solid relationship to address training and/or behaviour needs.

I am a better trainer for having studied and continuing to study/research animal behaviour. I am also a significantly better behaviourist for having trained my own dogs to advanced obedience and protection, as well as having trained many people in my school to a similar level.

There are "accredited" behaviourists who have not done any training, or just "puppy training" at best. Considering that a behavioural assessment should include training as part of the recommendations to modify or correct behaviour, how are they able to address serious behavioural issues, without having had experience training their own as well as other people and their dogs at an advanced level. I know this is a problem because I have worked with clients as a second, third and in one instance fourth behaviourist, where the client has been unhappy because the prior "accredited" behaviourists been unable to help or achieved minimal results. In many instances, the clients have told me the previous behaviourist/s have not actually even interacted with the dogs. Some of the behaviourists appear to have been too scared to interact with a large dog, or any aggression related issues. The cat/dog sessions I have done have often been after someone had concentrated on only the "problem" dog and completely ignored the cat, with the cat often desperately in need of behavioural attention and rehabilitation because of the dog. Addressing only the dog related aspect, will mostly not help the cat overcome its stress without specific behavioural input.

Depending on the nature of the problem or service required, we can do a Zoom! session as was done during hard lockdown. However some problems require an in person session.

Class training is outside, so we are able to separate adequately.
I am auto-immune compromised so acutely aware of maintaining social distancing. Masks covering nose and mouth are none-negotiable!!!
During hard lockdown some sessions were done in person because they involved correcting dangerous aggression towards family members and could not be addressed via an online session. These had to be done outside, I wore a mask, full visor, gloves and permanently carry disinfectant spray.
We insist on copies of dog vaccination cards, to reduce zoonotic transmission, also to protect other dogs in the school, especially puppies. Have checked with vets, because we insist on all dogs being vaccinated, puppies can join after their second set of vaccinations.

Services

Pre-assessment questionnaire, behavioural assessment of the pet in the environment where the problem occurs, recommendations for behavioural change. 100% guarantee of correction is not possible. The success of change is dependant on multiple variables, dependant on the the severity of the behaviour, the environment in which the pet lives, including whether the home is suited to a particular breed, the ability of the human companions to train and their compatibility with and ability to control a particular breed, amongst numerous other factors. Sometimes re-homing is recommended. Will also do work with cat/dog integration. We have 3 German Shepherds living with 3 cats at home.

STRICTLY BY INVITATION ONLY, subject to solid obedience and distance control. Please refer to the www.whyzdog.com. The protection we do is not a game or competition protection. It is not attack training where a dog might end up biting a child swinging a stick or toy. It should also not bite someone you know hugging you, or attacking because they move in your direction, are wearing hat, beanie or sunglasses etc. which the dog might not have encountered in training. They should also not bite a stranger just because they don't know a person. It is advanced training to expose to as many scenarios possible in order to teach a dog to recognise a true threat and respond accordingly. The dog should also respond to a command to protect, but should equally release and guard on command.
