What makes a great website?

A great websites is one that is user friendly, easy to read and navigate and one that is thought out to accommodate the business for now and the foreseeable future, SEO friendly and with the majority of the content editable by the owner also in a user friendly way.
Any website needs to have good content that serves the purposes of the target market, informing them, giving them decision making information and this relates to any website be it for cooking recipes, cars, clothing or insurance.
We don't start a website until we are familiar with the company products and services and those of its competitors. If it is a new business we look at the market to try and get the best approach.
So we look at a website from all points of view, buttrying to fit a clients business profile into a pre-determined template (website out of a box) is just about the last thing (square peg,round hole) one should do.

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

What is the nature of the business?
What is the target market?
What is the thing you do that you think is brilliant?
Who do you consider to be your competitors?
Do you see the scope of your business expanding?
Where do you want to be in 5 years time with your business?

It begins with a conversation over coffee, we have an overall grasp of most projects within minutes; we have been doing this a long time, but teasing out what may seem to be innocuous details can make all the difference to how we can help and understand you and your business.
We then research the business profile, competition and market opportunities. From there it is a brainstorming process to capture all the aspects, opportunities and issues or challenges to overcome before we arrive at a broad plan of attack.
Then we continue the conversation, check understanding, it's a two way thing.
Then we develop the specific courses of action.

What information do you need from a client before you can start work?

We don't know what information we need apart from the obvious and even then, the obvious is an assumption.
Apart from the concept, budget will come into play of course.

What do you love most about your job?

Seeing our clients win.
I personally enjoy engaging with my clients initially and on an ongoing basis.
We have learnt about a myriad of businesses over the years some similar, but each unique in their own way across a diverse range of business sectors.
Producing something that will grow their business and seeing them win is always gratifying to us.
Generally speaking, being emotionally detached from our clients business we tend to be able to view it more objectively and contribute to it bringing our experience and know how to bear.
That is not to say that we don't meet some talented driven individuals who know exactly what they want, have an implicit understanding of their business and know exactly how to get it, which is just as much fun.

What inspired you to start your own business?

To make a difference, not run of the mill, to engage and interact with our clients so we can arrive at the best possible solution.
The job is the same to a certain extent, but the variety of work, people we encounter and the ongoing development in this line of business is just amazing.
