Rescued an 11 year old Labrador in September. Unfortunately she wasn't lead trained, and had a few behavioural issues when on a lead. We took a set of lessons with Wakefield Dog Training Centre. Very glad we did. Miley has improved vastly and although still a work in progress, she is a pleasure to take for a walk now. As well as the basic lessons which were all one to one , I had Miley do what was called a Booster session. Which comprised of a whole day of one to one assessment, Miley and instructor only. Again well worth it , as it gave the instructor chance to see Miley as a whole. I cannot thank Jacob Morgan enough. More...

I have a German shepard who I thought was reactive and nervous around other dogs(how wrong I was) so chose to act first (fight instead of flight) by barking and lunging, at first it was just dogs then it became people, bags, hats, anything she thought was a threat. I have taken her to puppy classes and to other dog training groups to try to resolve the issue. But nothing seemed to work and as she was getting bigger she became stronger and stronger making it harder for me to control her. Eventually I stopped taking her on walks, stopped letting her in the car basically stopped her having fun and doing what a dog should do. I researched other dog training centres and landed on the Wakefield Dog Training Centre, after humming and arring for a while I went for it.After meeting Jacob for 5 minutes he instantly identified that my dog was guarding me and my mum... mostly me as she had found a weakness in me and felt the need to protect me. I handed over my dog to him for a day and within hours she was walking around with other dogs further consolidating that she was guarding me and giving me hope that this could be solved. After working with Jacob for the last few months I now have a GSD who can walk with other dogs and not bark at them.. She still gets it wrong sometimes but that's OK because Jacob has given me the tools and techniques I need to control her when she becomes heightened. He's taught me how to treat her as a dog and not like a baby (which I was guilty of), he's reminded me that I can control her and that I am in charge of her. It has been hard work but I was told it would be and I accepted it, everything we have done has been for her and it works I. cannot reccomend Jacob or the centre enough. He knows what he's talking about and the proof is in his own dogs. We still have a way to go but she will get there with time, patient and hard work. More...

I took my 8 year old labrador 'Ted' to Wakefield Dog Training centre in June after years of him being reactive towards other dogs and pulling on the lead. (Should have done it much sooner!) I opted for the 1-2-1 sessions after the initial assessment with Jacob. Over the following 6 weeks/ sessions Ted changed dramatically. His overall behaviour both at home and whilst out on walks has improved immeasurably and he is much more tolerant of other dogs. The support I received with everything during the training and the support I have received since has been fantastic and I would absolutely recommend it to everyone. Me and my partner adopted an extremely stubborn (some may say uncontrollable) staffy cross puppy from dogs trust, we were unable to walk him properly without him pulling me over and we couldn’t even sit in the house without him charging around. Ernie genuinely didn’t have an off switch. Two weeks with Jacob and we are finally able to sit in our living room and watch a movie whilst he lays on the floor, and we can finally go out on walks without him trying to chase people and other animals. He had already been returned twice to dogs trust. Without Jacob I don’t know what would have happened, he has changed our gorgeous boy into a controllable gorgeous boy!! We still have some work to do but with Jacobs continuous support we are finally gaining respect from Ernie. Can not thank him enough. More...

Educating the owners as well as the dog is key. I've completed Bronze and Silver Good Citizens Award Scheme and am currently waiting for the next level Gold. The support i've had afterwards has been invaluable and the group walks they put on, practicing and critiquing us in real life environments has helped with the continuation training at home. Sonny is a rescue dog who came over from Romania. He had lived his whole life (four years) in a shelter so when he came over to the UK to live in a city, he found life very overwhelming and became a very anxious dog, scared of pretty much anything and everything except me, his owner. He developed lead aggression and his daily walks became something to dread. A friend suggested contacting Wakefield Dog Training Centre as she was already working with them and seeing a massive improvement in her own dog. I booked an assessment session, where I met Adam with Sonny and discussed issues that we were having. Adam explained why various aspects of Sonny’s behaviour were happening and really gave me the confidence that it would be possible to make him much less anxious. He suggested a set of five 1-2-1 sessions for Sonny, along with an optional booster day that takes place on the day of your first lesson, I decided to go ahead with both. When I dropped Sonny off for his booster day, he looked terrified. I genuinely didn’t think that they would be able to do much with him that day. How wrong I was. When I went back six hours later, my dog was bouncing around having a love-in with Adam and Jacob and barely looked in my direction when I walked in. I couldn’t believe the difference. They had taken videos throughout the day so I could see what they had been doing with him. They showed him walking calmly to heel and sat nicely next to a large German Shepherd. All this within a couple of hours. Things I hadn’t managed to do myself in the 9 months I had him.Our first lesson went over what they had been doing with him on his booster day and showing me what I needed to do to get the same reactions from Sonny. That really is the theme of the training, they are actually training sessions for the owners far more than the dogs. The trainers at Wakefield Dog Training are all brilliant at what they do. I have had sessions with Adam, Jacob and Craig and all have been really knowledgeable and put me very much at ease. Jacob has been our main trainer and he has been so good at explaining why Sonny reacts in the way he does to different circumstances. The training sessions all focus on a different theme (sit, stay, recall etc.) and Jacob really helped me to understand how I need to act / react in order to get Sonny to do what I want him to do. Like anything else, practice makes perfect and these sessions only work properly if you are constantly putting what they have shown you into practice in real life. It is hard work but it is amazing when I look back as to how far Sonny has come in the last two months.Sonny isn’t ‘perfect’ yet but our life is so much easier and, more importantly, I have a happy dog who is enjoying his life in the UK now. Had 1 to 1 package training including booster with Jacob for Hamish the border collie who was 7month old when we started and I couldn't be happier with the results. To be honest, it was me that needed the training more than Hamish and Jacob explained everything we were doing in a way that was not only easy to follow but, made perfect sense. He gave us plenty to do at home between sessions, making sure what we'd done wasn't forgotten the moment we left the centre - the more you do the better the results next time. We had our last session today (Hamish is now 9month old) and I left with plenty of information on how to deal with other issues that had popped up and I'm certain I'll have them sorted in no time, as well as keeping up to what we have already learnt. I would definitely recommend Jacob and Adam - who did the consultation and was there for portions of a few sessions - to anyone with a puppy or for anyone wanting to correct issues in older dogs and I will be going back to have a crack at the Gold award in the future, they are lovely guys and the results speak for themselves. Services

Our group dog training classes are designed to take you and your dog through the various stages of his development through from the basic training all dogs require up to advanced level training that can ensure your dog knows how to behave in all situations.

The emphasis is on training you to understand how to communicate and interact with your dog as we find this allows you to get the best out of your dogs training. We do this through tutoring and demonstration to teach you the best way of training a dog.

To achieve the best results each course attendee is given personal attention and support throughout each session. For this reason we limit our class sizes to a maximum of 6 - 8 dogs.

We offer 3 Stages of Group Training which include the requirements of the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme and each level of training leads to an accredited award as part of the scheme. For a fully balanced dog, owners should look to complete all 3 Stages of the Group Training. On completion of each stage you will be given the chance to undertake an assessment under a KC licensed judge, so you really have something to work towards.

We also offer a great mixed training option for new dog owners.
This is a combination of both One to One and group training. Starting with a One to One session, making sure you have knowledge of the basics of nurturing a puppy correctly, then moving onto a group class.

We strongly believe with the right approach all dogs can be trained. There are some dogs that do not benefit from the group dog training class method to training. Maybe they lack focus, have specific problems like pulling on the lead or recall difficulties or are aggressive towards other dogs. For these we offer our One on One training.

Following an initial assessment we will plan a course that takes you and your dog through the basic commands as well as focusing on any specific issues they have before moving on to the more advanced techniques required for good control of your dog at distance and with distractions. You will be amazed how quickly your dog progresses with the benefit of our one to one dog training.

Problems that we regularly fix with One on One dog training:

• Pulling on the lead

• Dog to Dog Aggression

• Dog to Human Aggression

• Bad recall and running away

• Jumping up

• Over excitement around other dogs

• Mouthing & Nipping

• Noisy dogs

• Separation Anxiety

• Toilet Training

• Food Manners

• Nervousness

There are of course numerous reasons why people prefer to send their pets on a residential dog training course. In these cases your dog will be benefit from a concentrated course of dog training under the personal supervision of our instructors. As always we like to do an initial assessment with you and the dog. This helps us to understand yours and your dog’s needs and enables us to plan the course accordingly. Although best done here at the training centre, if this means travelling long distances then we can arrange to do a telephone assessment with you instead.

At the end of the course you will be given a personal tuition session where we will demonstrate what your dog has learnt during the training course plus be shown the techniques required to maintain their training.

During his training your dog will enjoy comfortable heated accommodation with fully covered runs within our beautiful rural surroundings. We can even tailor our courses to fit in with your holiday plans.

Our home visit services can help you in all areas of dog ownership, from behaviour correction, general dog or puppy training, nutrition, advice & guidance. Particularly useful if you are re-homing a dog from a rescue or adoption centre. Quite often rescued dogs will seem to settle in quickly but after time will start to develop problems often associated with the reasons they were in the rescue centre. We can show you the pitfalls to avoid and how to develop a lasting relationship with your new dog that avoids these old issues reoccurring.

Home visits for young puppies

Bringing a new puppy into the home can be a daunting task. To avoid future problems it is vital that you get things right at the outset with good puppy training. Your puppies behaviour is instinctive and things like mouthing, jumping up and crying through the night although not seen as big issues to begin with can lead to major problems in the future if not dealt with properly at the start.

We will visit you and your puppy in your home and show you all those important little things that you need to know but just don’t know where to start. Things like the best way to start toilet training, how to play with your puppy and how to make sure they know where they fit into the family group. The sooner this is done the better and failure to get it right can lead to future problems that can be difficult and time consuming to fix in the future.

Home visits are available within a 20 Mile radius of the Centre.
