Q&As

What makes a website great is efficient organization, clear navigation, and most of all a great message. The first major challenge to creating any website is organizing the content. It's important to have a pleasing design, but all the pretty stuff needs to accent the structure – not be the structure. Think of it this way. If you paid a landscaping company to design a look for your front yard, and they simply crammed every trendy new plant and paver into the space between the the street and your house, you'd be looking fo a new landscaper. The point of landscaping is to accentuate the look of your home–not cover it up.

Now, let's say that you have your content organized into pages, posts, and menus. You know what the important pieces are. The next thing is to make sure that your content flows. You need to make sure that customers who visit your site experience your content in a way that is logical and effective. You also need to make sure that they can find whatever they're looking for in 3 clicks or less. In other words, you have to make it easy for your customers to engage your company.

Finally, and most importantly, you have to have a great message. No amount of organization or navigation will overcome the problem of having nothing to say. This is where most companies really struggle. You have to have more to say than, "We've been in business for ## years." You need to push beyond the jargon and the cliches. Nobody cares if you're a "full-service" whatever, and the internet is full of "one-stop-shops." Tell people what makes you different from your competitors. Talk about the aspects of your company that are truly unique and why you believe that uniqueness matters. If you can combine efficient organization and clear navigation with a really great message, you'll have a great website.

This is what I like to know when starting a new project:

* What is the objective? "I want to _________________ through this project."
* How will we define success? "This will be a successful project if__________________."
* What is the budget? "I'm will to spend _________ to achieve a successful result."
* What is the timeline? "I want to achieve successful results in ____ days/weeks/months?

My creative process is a combination of research, experimentation, and implementation. Any project begins with research. In order to create, I need to experience and understand your company. I'll need to read everything I can about you. I'll need to spend time with your people. I'll need to research and understanding your competitors.

Once I have complete my research, I'll need to experiment with some ideas. Experimenting involves creating possible solutions and then testing them vigorously to weed out what doesn't work and improve what does. The goal in this stage is to accomplish it as efficiently and effectively as possible. Then move on to implementing the solutions that have the greatest chance of success.

The final stage of my creative process is where I implement solutions with the brightest possibilities while constantly qualifying them as I collect analytics. Ideas are a fine start, but ideas that are proven over time by solid analytic data are one you can rely on time and again. They're also the building blocks of future successful ideas.

See the "What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?" section above.

What I love most about my job is the joy a client experiences when he or she see their business grow like never before. Most entrepreneurs start their business, because they believe in their product or service enough to think that other people need it. They sink their whole lives into their companies believing that they have real potential for success. However, most of the time, they end up settling for mediocrity. There's nothing like seeing a client freak out when the bottom line rises and business takes off.

I started my company out of a desire to control three very important aspect of my work. Like most entrepreneurs, I wanted to control my schedule, my priorities, and my environment. If you think about it, these are the things people complain about the most when they dislike their jobs. You hear them saying, "have to," a lot. "I have to go to work." "I have to get this done." "I have to put up with the interruptions."

I prefer, "get to," statements. "I get to choose when I go to the office." "I get to decide what to work on next." "I get to wear what I want and listen to my favorite music at my desk." "Get to" statements are positive and fulfilling. They are also made possible by controlling my schedule, my priorities, and my environment.

You clients should choose me, because:

* I believe that I succeed, because they succeed.
* I'll only ever tell them the truth.
* I care more about fixing problems than I do about being right.
* I care more about helping them than I do about billing them.
* I understand that business relationships are ultimately about giving and I will always work to outgive my clients.
