Amazing steak. I think the Google price guide is off but the food is so worth the price. My mother in law got a traditional German dish and she said it tasted just like she remembered getting in Germany.

Pleasant surprise to experience such carefully prepared excellent food in an idyllic downtown setting. Thoughtful preparation and choices, fresh ingredients, generous portions and reasonable prices, an amazing wine by the glass list, served in a relaxing and beautiful setting make this a restaurant to want to return to over and over again. Came in for lunch and it wasn't too busy. The space is nicely laid out and clean! I loved the turtle stamp canvases that decorated all the walls! I had the quiche with the mixed green salad. Both were excellent and tasted so fresh! The quiche had great consistency and flavor. It was homey and comforting! I would definitely recommend checking out this gem! More...

high end chef created cuisine. I'd go to Brownwood just to eat there. There's an enocoteca room perfect for wine tastings (or you can pair with a meal) this Chef Mary has won various awards in Austin competitions for gelato! did I mention an independent but connected gelateria to rival any I've had in Rome (Italy) not Rhome. this place is an oasis in a land of heart challenging fried and chicken fried. The atmosphere is light bright and friendly. I can imagine that in summer months dining on the patio would rival my favorite family restaurant in the parioli section of rome... tre sorelle (3 sisters). everything is fresh made and absolutely delicious and well worth the trip or stop enroute or returning from Austin. don't miss it. remember to thank me for the tip! A gem in the center of Brownwood!  En route to Austin and found this wonderful and enterprising restaurant which  also has an enocoteca and gelateria attached!  Great chef class fresh made food, upbeat decor. Ate Thanksgiving supper there with friends and everyone just loved it....so that we all went back today.  So glad to have found a darn good chef in town! Definitely will return often! More...

I came here for dinner with a few coworkers. The space is a lot bigger than what it seems on the outside. We came around 5:30/6pm and there were probably 3 other groups. Not loud at all. The waiter we had was new but he was attentive. I got the shrimp pasta, but that took forever to come out. As a matter of fact, it took forever for my tables food to come out - way too long for a small restaurant. It had too much sauce and too little spaghetti for my liking but it still filled me up. Had a mixed cocktail, which was perfect. Not watered down at all. It was sweet, but you definitely taste the alcohol. For dessert I had salted caramel gelato and it was perfect. The serving size was pretty large which is good. I topped it off with some bread pudding which I was disappointed with. The creamy curd or whatever the topping was tasted nice, but the bread pudding was one of the worst I've tasted. Would not get it again. It tasted too soggy and lacked flavor. Total meal/drink cost: $50Conclusion: I'm from a big city, so I'm used to better. 4 stars only because It's the nicest restaurant Brownwood has to offer, in my opinion (although that may be a fact considering the town's size lol). If it were in a city, 3 stars. Food took a while. Food was decent. Drink was great, at least what I ordered. Service was good. Would I come here again? Maybe, maybe not. Is it worth it? For something different while living here, sure.Parking is obviously not an issue - it's Brownwood. More...

This was highly recommended as a sit down dinner on our drive from Austin to Abilene- and it did not disappoint! It was not very crowded as it was a bit close to closing time - but they did not hurry us! We started with the Sourdough and Butter (I am a sucker for good sourdough- and this was really good!) we ordered the Spicy Red Pork and the Spicy Spaghettoni with shrimp. Both dishes were amazing! Spicy - but not too much. My pasta was fresh and homemade -cooked perfectly with a spicy meat sauce and large grilled shrimp. I am told the spicy pork was wonderful - but it was gone before I got a bite! We topped off the night with coffee and some amazingly good gelato (which is house made and awArd winning)Would recommend to anyone heading this way! More...

This is such a great, high-quality restaurant! I ate at the Turtle on 6/22 and had a fantastic experience. I had a sliced prime rib sandwich with au jus and it was tender and the sauce very flavorful. I sampled everyone around me and didn't have a bad bite! And for dessert someone ran next door and brought back several gelatos, including one made from roses. In Brownwood So pleasantly surprised. More...

Had lunch at The Turtle recently, and it was delicious! The service was wonderful and the food was outstanding! Everything is cooked fresh on site and nothing is from a package! Brownwood has a jewel in The Turtle! If you live in Brownwood, I hope you are supporting this local business! A small business is a special place, and needs the city's support to survive the chains that are building up in the town! For me, knowing who is cooking your food and where it comes from is so much more important than going to the chains which are not personal at all, plus you are supporting your ownBy far this is the most important! So go out and have lunch or dinner at The Turtle! I can't wait to go back and enjoy another wonderful meal and glass of wineBecky Roby Jordan More...

I am from Fort Worth and while visiting my grandparents happened to eat at The Turtle. This is by far my favorite restaurant in Brownwood.  In a town full of chains, this is a breath of fresh air. The menu is thoughtfully created as is each dish.  The Brussels sprouts are incredible and the sourdough bread binge-worthy.  The gelato was a delicious end to a fantastic meal. Every bite was full of well paired flavors. We also had the sourdough bread which was the perfect way to start our meal. We ended with gelato and creme brûlée which I definitely recommend. Our server Cynthia was also a wonderful highlight, she was one of the best servers we have ever had. If your wondering where to go, look no further than the Turtle Restaurant. More...

The quality of the food and drinks at The Turtle matches up with almost any upscale restaurant around. I've lived in New Orleans and Washington, DC, and eaten at many good restaurants. The Turtle is the real deal. The prices are what you should expect to pay for the quality.  They make wicked cocktails, have a great wine menu, and the food is absolutely top notch. I've eaten here twice in the last two weeks on my way to and from Austin. I'll definitely be back again. More...

Four stars for the food. I appreciate the 'slow food' and skill of the chef, as well as the sourcing of excellent ingredients & Im willing to pay more for a nice dinner out, every now and then. However, if there was a lower priced 'dinner special' at night, that would also be a reason to go more often. Same for lunch...more than $10 for lunch in Brownwood is too much. More...

We make a point of stopping here each year on our way to visit relatives in Dallas. We were very excited to find a restaurant along a route that is mostly lined with fast food, that has a lovely menu and delicious choices (healthy as well). We have enjoyed conversations with the owner over the years and understand the challenges of providing thoughtful culinary offerings - in not only an out of the way historic central city, but in an area that may not be as supportive of this type of "slow food" as a bigger city might be.
