John’s wise words helped me again today. I’ve been getting a bit frustrated at being so slow again after my break from swimming so this morning I went back to the basics that John helped me to understand. Drive from the hips and feel the water. I also remembered our conversation about not being afraid to “fail” in a training session. Not to hold back just in case I can’t complete the set. Well, I pushed on and I flew! So happy (and tired) ! Thanks again for giving me the tools to fix the basics myself. More...

It has been really good for my son to have had some 1-1 sessions with John again. We first met John 4 years ago when our son had some sessions with him when he was 11. John helped him with stroke technique and his approach to his coaching was so good and made him feel very comfortable, so much so that he has wanted to see him again. It’s been a good experience for him and John has given him lots of positive feedback and things to work on to help make things easier for him in the water. We are very happy with how John has worked with him and shown a great deal of care and attention and hope to revisit him again in the near future. More...

As with the majority of people new to triathlons swimming was comfortably my weakest discipline. John put me at ease straight away, he asked me what I was hoping to gain from the lessons and we got straight to it. John knows what he is talking about, he doesn't over complicate things and he describes what he needs from you in a clear way that's easy to understand. After the lessons it was really useful talking to John as he is always giving you things to work on in your own time, which I really benefited from. I also liked that fact that it would have been very easy for John to tell me I needed loads of lessons and I would have believed him, but he didn't. He's a decent guy, I had two lessons and that was pretty much all I needed for the level I'm at at the moment. He offered advice on transitions, my cycling and running. In the two lessons I had I knocked 8 mins off of my 1500 time. Cheers, John! More...

Had a swim analysis session with John today which I was initially apprehensive of, and thought that I may be wasting yet more money on triathlon! Instead, I have come away having had my first ever real appreciation of what a fluid stroke feels like, and more importantly the cues that I need personally to make improvements. So often coaching follows a one size fits all "idealistic" textbook type of approach, but not here, John obviously has a wealth of knowledge and is able to adapt it to the client giving simple and individual cues that can be taken away. I've had coaching with John since July 2013. I was a 8:30 for my 400m. I had regular 1-1 and I got my swim time down progressively over 3 years reaching a 6:45 which I never thought I would achieve. In 2016 I asked John to write my swim sets for me so I had more of a focus when I swam. I am pleased to say 2017 saw me regularly achieve 6:30. I am pleased that John is working with me again in preparation for the European sprint championship at glasgow later this year.
I did a css test today and along with it new pb of 6:20, very happy. Consistency, hard work and a great coach, it all pays off.

I contacted John after being recommended by Rio 2016 Olympic Paratriathlon Gold medalist Andy Lewis.

After my first session where we concentrated on my body position and being streamline in the water I went away and did my normal sessions where I ended up knocking off 5 seconds over 100m and felt like I wasn't working as hard as I used to. I was really looking forward to my coaching session with John after all the positive reviews I'd read and I was not disappointed. He put me at ease straight away, explained the format of the session and after a breif chat of what i wanted to get out if it we got right to it.
John cleary knows his stuff, after a warm up he was pointing out technique changes and got me doing drills and clearly explained the reasoning behind each one. His way of explaining and obvious enthusiasm makes it so easy to pick up what he wants you to do. And by the end of the session I felt stronger, more comfortable, and I was going faster. Great!
After the session i got a plan going forward and personalised drills to work on, and I honestly can't wait for my follow on session in a few weeks time.

I am 51 years old. I am a competitive person inside but greatly lacking in confidence. A few years ago, I took up running and managed a few half marathons before my knee ground me to a halt. After that, I found it immensely frustrating to be surrounded by competitive people who were achieving great things whilst I seemed unable to join them. One day, someone suggested that I could do an open water swim. I said no, that wasn't possible because I had never been taught to swim front crawl and hadn't got access to any teacher. That was when I heard about John and contacted him to ask for his help. Fortunately, he agreed. I will never forget my first lesson. I got in the water feeling like a complete idiot. I had never worn a swim cap or goggles. John asked me to just do one length to show him what I could do. I looked at him blankly and said, "No John. I can't even do one stroke!" Breast stroke was all I could manage. After 3 lessons, I was able to swim a length of crawl. After 5 lessons, I swam a mile of crawl. One day, I really do hope to achieve a major endurance open water swim. John Wood is the most talented coach. I know that he coaches high level athletes but his calm, gentle manner makes you feel just as valuable a person for him to teach as any other at any level. Every time I have a lesson, I come away with renewed confidence. As soon as I had had lesson 5, I knew that the next time I swam, I would be able to achieve my one mile target. Granted, it took me 45 minutes but I did it! If you are an absolute beginner or if you are an experienced triathlete who wants to improve, I couldn't recommend John highly enough. The smile that people come out of sessions with, having enjoyed and feeling like they are moving through the water easier, faster or both! The lightbulb moment is a joy to watch!

I've always coached through my life - my coach had me teaching young swimmers from the age of 15 and it's something that I have always enjoyed. Running my own business allows me to do the things I enjoy.

Clients should choose the person that best suits them. It may be cost affected, but the person that listens to you and understands what you need best is the person that is going to get the best from you.
The benefit of working with me is that I offer a time tested formula to help people improve their skills, while being flexible enough to make tweaks and changes to that approach where needed.

Services

These are sessions that can be done on a one-off basis or as a series of sessions; or as a regular check to see how techniques are improving and progressing. We run swim coaching in Bristol and around the country.

Swimming efficiently is the first target; then we can look to make it faster! The main aim is to make sure everything is as high in the water as possible and minimising the resistance. There are many schools of thought, the ASA, Total Immersion, Swim Smooth – countless others. What we will look to do is help you find the way that is best for you.

Sessions are £40 for 45 minutes. They are based completely around quality – so if things start to fall apart, for whatever reason we will stop. You still have my time, and we can work through things off the treadmill or out of the pool; but we won’t be encouraging bad habits!

These are sessions that can be done on a one-off basis or as a series of sessions; or as a regular check to see how techniques are improving and progressing.
Running is something that is not normally taught. We just do it. However there are many things that will help make things just a little easier and/or faster. As with swimming there are many schools of thought – Chi Running, Pose Method, Barefoot Running, heel striking… As with the swimming above we will aim to help you with what works for your body and unique mechanics.

Sessions are £40 for 45 minutes. They are based completely around quality – so if things start to fall apart, for whatever reason we will stop. You still have my time, and we can work through things off the treadmill or out of the pool; but we won’t be encouraging bad habits!

Video swim analysis isn’t a necessity for skill improvement. However it certainly is a very useful tool. One of the benefits with video swim analysis is that you can change your technique and see what you’re doing wrong in real time. It also allows you to see what you are ACTUALLY doing as opposed to what you THINK you are doing! These can be wildly different, even for experienced athletes! Video assessment allows us to target particular weaknesses in your technique; things that might be causing injury / niggles, fatigue, or just slowing you down.

For swimming, our packages are as follows:

Swimming – Sprint package £70 – (1 hour session, with Instant Video feedback).

Swimming – Olympic package £90 – (1 hour session, with Instant Video feedback, DVD to take away).

Swimming – Middle distance package £110 – (1 hour session, with Instant Video feedback, DVD to take away, Full analysis report and Swim Correction Drills).

Swimming – Long distance package £130 – (as Middle distance package, with an additional 20 minute swim session for video analysis, at a later date).

Video swim analysis sessions are done at the Triathlon Shop, our major partner. They have an endless pool which allows us to video swimmers essentially swimming on the spot.

On-going coaching follows your season all the way through your target races from recovery, to preparation to race and back through again if that is something you are after.

It is important to have an initial one-to-one consultation, as this will help determine your targets and aims, and what you want out of this relationship. The coaching process is a two way thing, and requires athlete input – and we want you to feel comfortable with the person who is going to write your programme! In an ideal world this would be in person, but is not necessary; in this digital age we can use skype or good old fashioned phone calls!

You will then receive an individual training programme tailored to your ability, aims, strengths and weaknesses. This training plan will outline each individual cycle and the intentions within that; then obviously the daily sessions within each cycle. Focussed coaching means that we can look to suggest strength & conditioning elements as a holistic part of your whole schedule. This is obviously arranged around the time you have free around your lifestyle. Your programme is written on triblogs.com so that we can plan ahead for you – and that you can keep them abreast of how you are getting on. It is also a useful tool for yourself, to see how you progress!

Communication is key to the operation, so both athlete and coach know where they stand. Most of this will be via regular e-mail, texts, phone calls and may include one-to-one consultations or training sessions (additional charges may apply).

What are the benefits?

Minimal thought – you know your training ahead of time, no need to plan something out.
Motivational – you will have your own reasons; but a good structured plan will keep you fresh mentally
Adaptability – if circumstances change (and in life they regularly do!) we can make quick alterations to your plan to help you get the best out of your time.
Relationship – you know that you are getting to know someone who can get the best out of you and the time you have available.
