Great happy hour and dinner menu. Excellent wine menu. The staff is the friendliest I've had the pleasure to meet in a very long time. We had wine and a charcuterie plate. It was a perfect Friday evening. Plan on making this a regular place to enjoy a light dinner or a full meal. More...

Still impressed beyond words. I'm always coming back even if I take some time off. Date night 100% Tru the caprese salad and go wild after that. An employee named Sean really took care of us last time in and I'll never forget the level of service provided. Top 10 in San Diego hands down. More...

After a long day of travel I just got into the Gas Lamp district and needed to get a quick bite to eat. The service was quick and friendly the food was amazing. The ambiance set the mood for small groups to come gather and eat together making memories. I ordered from the anti pasta section of the menu and it was amazing, cobetta, type of meatball and a NYC style cheesecake. Great place a definite do again More...

We went to the auto show and were getting hungry so we took a walk up 5th street and found Toscana. It is across the street from Old Spaghetti Factory if you want real Italian food go to Toscana. We chose a bottle of wine and my girl is now gluten-free so we asked what was available, the waiter said most pasta's were available gluten-free. She had a penne pasta it was good not great but it was gluten-free. I had Lasagna it was excellent, not heavy, it had a great flavor. I would come back and try other dishes it was good and our waiter was excellent. More...

The atmosphere is cozy, the food divine and portions more than worthy of the price! The owner, Sean is always around to greet people, make sure everything is going as it should be and sometimes even is behind the scenes as a chef. The servers are always attentive and i've never had a bad experience here. The shrimp scampi is by far my favorite dish and I pair it with the bruschetta or their Toscana Charcuterie. More...

It was our anniversary dinner night out and I chose this restaurant for it's location, service, and delicious Italian food. I had called a few nights ago and made dinner reservations. They were very helpful and courteous over the phone. They accommodated my request for outdoor seating and a reservation time that would ensure we make our scheduled show later that evening to see none other than Mr.Jeremy Piven!Service was friendly and polite from our arrival and all the way thru dinner. They were attentive but yet subtle. They had no issues moving us to a different table when asked due to our proximity to the heated lamps, and a larger party. Upon showing our yelp checkin they brought us each a tasting sampler of their creamy and tasty mushroom risotto. We also ordered their bruschetta which seemed like a popular item from reviews we saw. I would've preferred the texture to be more crunch and crisp but the flavors were fresh and tasty. After the bruschetta, we were provided fresh Italian bread with marinara dipping sauce. My wife then ordered the Branzino with capers and pasta. The fish was fresh and cooked well. My wife doesn't like fish that tastes too 'fishy' so I was glad to see her enjoy her dish.  I had the seared scallops with risotto which was simply divine. I would gladly order this dish again next time!  We were too full to order dessert. Thank you toscana for a wonderful meal and a very pleasant dining experience. More...

Food is great, but what makes Toscana stand out is it's exemplary service. Had the chicken Parmesan and the mussel and clam pasta, but the server came to tell us that the chef was concerned that the clams might be iffy, so they added shrimp and scallops to the dish, on top of comping our drinks as way of apologizing for the wait. They didn't need to do any of that, but went out of their way to take care of us. More...

I came to San Diego all the way from Edinburgh for my business conference and immediately started to search nice places to visit on Yelp. I was lucky enough to find this lovely Toscana restaurant which I visited with a couple of colleagues from Latin America, with very high quality food (our choice of salmon salad and the perfect fruity white wine that I guarantee you'll enjoy to say the least), great customer service with a very friendly staff and even the music, decorations and the restaurant atmosphere were really lovely! Our server was very good. He came back after we got our order and said "Sorry to bother you, how your first bite?" Now that's a courteous, considerate, excellent service. On a business vacation trip, I stopped in at the most pristine time. Sun almost starting to set, families walking the city, enjoying the start to their evening.I sat in the back next to the kitchen, and I learned why, the pancetta has strong notes of salt; to be enjoyed sparingly in balance with the sauce, and atmosphere. I had food to take with me, and a newappreciation of take, flavor, and caring service from my memorable waitress. Visited San Diego and was in the mood for Italian. Stopped here and they give bread out with this great slightly spicy sauce. Added a bit of salt and pepper and it was fantastic. I ordered something not on menu. All I wanted for an appetizer was one meatball and sausage served with sauce. Meatball was out standing and fresh. Loved it and my name is tony. Sausage was simple bordered better than average but not memorable. Next dish is the chicken parmigiana   Waiting for it now. Night is winding down so they're a bit slow but the service so far has been fantastic and. Or ally when they start closing they rush the food. Not here. Great serving 6 raviolis and 2 breasts. Chicken is cooked perfect just a nice light crunch. Prices are a bit high but not no where's near as high as surrounding restaurants. I'll be back for sure. Guess I should have waited before leaving to write this. Waiter jus disappeared and asked hostess for to go box and went in to pay. Oh well it WAS 5 star More...

One of the most joyful things a foodie can experience is the accidental discovery of a true culinary gem.  That happened about two years ago when we were strolling through the Gaslamp and stumbled across Toscana Café & Wine Bar.  We've been in love ever since.Located on the corner of 5th and K street, Toscana is family owned and operated and you can tell that from the people who work there.  Especially Derrek who is an extraordinary server who recognizes you, even if it's been a year since you've been there.  Toscana has a huge selection of wines by the glass and the list is always changing to bring the finest offerings in the area.I almost always have the Chicken Marsala which is never the same.  The Chef is constantly experimenting with fine Marsala's to find the perfect flavor.  Butter, a healthy serving of Mushrooms and Marsala wine combine for silky smooth delight smothering pounded pan-seared Chicken Breast.  If that isn't enough, Toscana adds three massive Crimini Mushroom Tortellini for a thoroughly satisfying meal. The truffle Lobster Ravioli is also spectacular with its house-made Alfredo Sauce topped with White Truffle Oil.  I can still taste the deep and robust flavors just thinking about this dish.  Truly remarkable.  There are too many other fabulous dishes to describe, but if you have a thing for Shrimp Scampi, you have to try it here.  Capers, lots of Garlic, Butter and Roma Tomatoes blend with the tossed spaghetti is divine.Toscana also has a great breakfast and lunch menu and if the weather permits, ask for the corner table on the patio.  Awesome people watching...especially during ComicCon!  Give this place a go.  You'll be glad you did and don't forget to ask for Derrek!Enjoy! I had their ahi tuna sandwich (well done). It was absolutely delicious.  The tuna was grilled to perfection, the bread was crunchy but still soft, and unlike other sandwich places that overdo it with the condiments, it was light and flavorful. The restaurant is a bit pricey which is fine if the customer service was up to par, however I had to send back my plate originally since the tuna was raw at first (even when I asked for well done). Outstanding service. Our server was Lucas from Poland. Consistent, attentive, and most importantly genuine and friendly. We know Italian food (my wife and I) so we went with the Lobster Ravioli special that was recommended with a white truffle cream sauce, blackened scallops and grilled shrimp. Flavor was outstanding. He then went on to recommend many other places that were his favorite spots to go in the gas lamp district. Also, I might add that yes, we went with bruschetta as the appetizer (I know it's typical). 99 percent of the time when your order bruschetta, even in 5-star Italian restaurants, the bread is so hard that it practically slices the inside of your mouth. The bread that was served at Toscana was perfectly toasted and moderately soft, making one of my favorite dishes even better than I remember. Ask for Lucas and thank me later. Oh and LOCATION was fun, festive, and electrifying with active, nice people in every direction. 5 stars for San Diego on that one. We'll be back! More...

My wife and I were all set to head out to Eddie V's for dinner when one of our friends had to cancel so we decided to try something different.  Since we were staying right near this place and I had mentioned it before to my wife, she really wanted to give it a shot since she has traveled to Italy several times and always likes to see how places match up to the real thing.  There is absolutely nothing that I can complain about this restaurant.  My wife felt the same way.  Very warm greeting upon entering, they were quick to acknowledge us at the bar and our bartender, Peter was excellent.  He recommended the Albarino for me and my wife got a glass of Pinot Grigio.  Both were good choices.  We usually opt for small plates so we tried the Toscana Mediterranean Dip.  It was fresh, perfectly executed and the crostini tasted like it was just made in the oven.  A complete homerun over your basic hummus that you get at most places with flatbread.  We then moved on to the Prosciutto Wrapped Mozzarella.  Another fantastic dish.  What I liked was that the Balsamic Reduction wasn't overdone to the point where it soaked the greens.  It really was well balanced.  This was quite the find for us and we have already talked about returned when we come down again on the 4th weekend.  It's hard for some of the smaller, more boutique places to standout in a competitive marketplace like the Gaslamp but Toscana more than held its own in that regard. Never have had wine before. I wanted to come in and be tended to properly and that is exactly what I experienced. The staff is extremely professional. My girlfriend and I are a younger couple and when we come into nice establishments like this one we aren't provided with the best service typically. Not the case at all here. I got to taste a couple different wines from different families before making a single purchase. Dago is the best here. Please go see him If you would like a professional wine introduction experience. This set up my first day of my vacation here at the gas lamp in San Diego to a great start! Thank you guys and I will now embark in my net journey to the world of wine More...

Stopped in for lunch while visiting San Diego for a conference. The decor is super cute and feels Italian. It was pretty quiet when we were there (lunchtime on a weekday) and the service was good. We got paninis and a French dip and everyone enjoyed their meal. The ciabatta they use for sandwiches is great. Overall it was a good experience, though it didn't blow me away. More...

Literally amazing! I've been coming to this little place for several years now so I feel like I can write an honest review. Derek was my first waiter and now is always my waiter! I will wait for a table in his section. Always have had absolutely perfect service! He's the right amount of attentive, talkative, he's incredibly personable and he's so knowledgable on wine! I literally tell him to surprise me every time and he never fails to deliver something I always end up writing down to buy later! If there was ever an issue he was hot to fix the issue and always offers to cover the check. If you're looking for a nice place downtown that plays a little Dean Martin and a little Frank Sinatra with some Italian flair, this is the place. #goodfood #greatservice #bestpeople More...

Gorgeous little corner bar/cafe.  I needed to buy a sandwich to go and this place was about 20 feet from my hotel.  Upon opening the menu, I had a little sticker shock as most sandwiches were about $15.95, and I thought for a second I was still at the hotel.  Guess it's the high rent district here!  Anyway, I had a seat at the bar as I waited for my order, and watched some of the memorial service for First Lady Nancy Regan on the bar TV.  I really enjoyed the ambiance here and wished I had stopped in for happy hour the night before.  My order--blackened ahi tuna wrap--was prepared fairly quickly, and it was delicious!  Sorry no pics, I devoured it as I drove back to my home sweet home. I'm a native San Diegan and pretty much avoid the Gaslamp at all cost. However, we found ourselves down there Sunday at World Market and I desperately wanted a good Bloody Mary. Dicey considering divisional football was on and the Gaslamp was crawling with lots of jersey-wearing bros and bars were super crowded. So we popped into Toscana because it had one TV we could watch the game and it was mellow. I've been here before. It just has a great vibe. After telling the bartender, Derek, that I was wanting a Bloody Mary, he asked me if I liked basil and proceeded to whip up a deliciously insane Bloody Mary with this basil-infused vodka. Omg so good! And nothing disco, either. There wasn't a bunch of food sticking out of my drink, just olives and a really good mix... not too spicy, but had a nice kick. Not only does Derek make a mean cocktail, he was super friendly, personable and funny. Rare these days, really, as more breweries and new places pop-up in San Diego. Wait staff can be so tragically groovy, forgetting what customer service is all about. It was refreshing to BS with a bartender who actually took time to engage with us...made it fun! I enjoyed our stop here and we will be going back for wine and food--- the menu looks great! :) More...

We were in San Diego for New Years weekend, walking around the Gaslamp District with hundreds of dining choices... a peddle cab driver recommended Toscana and decided to give it a shot. No wait on a Saturday around 8:30pm. We had the yelp bruschetta to start which was delicious once we got an extra side of balsamic. My fiance went with the chicken picatta that was on special that night. He regularly orders this dish at Italian restaurants and said this one was one of the best he's had. I ordered a Cesar salad and spaghetti pomodoro. The cesar was good, but the pomodoro was exceptional for such a simple pasta dish. The spaghetti was cooked perfectly, and the sauce was very flavorful. Unfortunately I can't remember our servers name for the life of me, but he was wonderful as well. We will definitely return to Toscana next time we are in San Diego! More...

This is a cute little spot downtown. I had never been and a group of us were coming for brunch after a convention center workout. They have outdoor and indoor seating. At first they sat our group of 10 outside but it was a bit chilly so they made room for us inside. It wasn't crowded on a Thursday New Year's Eve morning.I got the Classic Benny and my friend got the California Omelette and we shared. The California Omelette had some crab in it, which was different. If you don't like seafood I suggest not ordering it. The benny was as it says in the name, classic. The sides were potatoes and fruit. I ordered a bloody mary with bacon for $2 extra and a strawberry orange mimosa. Both very tasty. The mimosa was a heavy pour. No skinny flute glasses here. Service was good. The bartenders were tending to the tables as well as the tables so for our big group they handled it well. We all parked in the street and paid the meters. More...

My boyfriend and I searched for a great place to have breakfast/brunch on New Years day. We were happy to find out that this place was serving breakfast until 12pm! We were greeted by the hostess who was very nice and she seated us wherever we wanted to sit. We looked over the menu and i decided to order a Latte with almond milk and hazelnut syrup. My Boyfriend ordered a hot chocolate. For breakfast I ordered the italian sausage omelette and he ordered the pancakes with sausage and eggs. Overall the food was delicious and the ambiance was very nice. I did want some tiramisu pancakes with some eggs and sausage but the pancakes alone were about $12 and an additional $3 per add on... almost $20 for the food so I settled on a $13 omelette with potatoes instead. Nonetheless it was still delicious and our waiter Cameron was also very helpful. He took the time to explain the menu choices to me and checked on us regularly. I will def be back next time im in SD. I also love that as I was seated at the bar a couple from North Carolina came in & sat at the bar. They had thick accents & were dressed extremely casual. While on a stroll downtown, the hostess greeted us and informed us of their happy hour specials and prices. We weren't quite ready to stop and eat or have a drink, but the hostess was so kind with a warm personality, we decided we would try to make it back. As we returned later, the hostess remembered us and welcomed us like old friends. We were cutting it close for happy hour, but she ensured us we weren't too late. We were seated outside as we preferred and were quickly tended to by our server, who was extremely professional and nice. Not being so hungry, we just ordered drinks and appetizers from the happy hour specials. We were very pleasantly surprised with the size and quality of the food and drinks. I was surprised to see the restaurant virtually empty when we walked up - it was the "heart of the gas lamp district" after all, at 6 pm.  So that scared me a little bit.  We took a chance anyway, and weren't disappointed. The food was good - not cheap, but not overpriced, either.  The wait staff (probably because we were the only people in the place) were very attentive and courteous.  As far as our appetizers - the bruschetta appetizer was perfect; the chicken skewers were slightly overcooked and just 'okay'.  Once the appetizers were cleared, they served Italian bread with an absolutely yummy cup of warm marinara sauce to dip in.  Had I known that was coming, I would not have ordered a main course.  I had the cippino, which was very good, very hearty portion with lots of seafood.  Of the two others in my party, one order the filet - it was lovely and cooked to perfection; and the other ordered the JUMBO scallops.  While I was told they were tasty, I would never have had the nerve to call them JUMBO.Overall, I'd say it was a pleasant and tasty dining experience.  I would go back again, although I 'm still scratching my head as to why nobody else was there. Their Chicken Marsala is my absolute favorite dish anywhere, right now. Discovered this place when we were wondering around the Gaslamp area, lost, looking to have breakfast at The Broken Yolk. Good thing we did, loved their breakfast menu so we visited again for dinner at a later date. Their dinner menu was new to us so we played "Pass the dish to the right" so as to be able to sample a little of everything. I loved my new dish (the Marsala) but can't wait to come back to try those other dishes I sampled. I will also add that our waiter was more than patient with us, having moved from outside to inside seating when it started getting cold before we ordered.  His suggestions were spot-on and he was very helpful explaining the menu questions we had. Was looking for a spot to grab a bite when I came across this place. I saw today's special was salmon Ceasar so figured I would give it a try. The bar was clean and the staff were friendly and attractive. The atmosphere was pretty calm and quiet which was relaxing. Especially for the hustle and bustle of the GasLamp. The atmosphere seemed a little formal.  Typical of a nice Italian restaurant but still warm and welcoming. This is more like a business lunch crowd, truly more a restaurant for fine dining, More so than for lunch on the go. I was impressed at how the staff seemed to take care of presentation and plating. The salmon salad was pretty tasty. The portion of salmon was pretty large. I think a tad overpriced even though it was slightly cheaper than during the evening menu cost. My only major criticism is that for an almost 20 buck Ceasar salad I expect some olives, red onions, or pepperoncini ... The deserts did look appealing. Amazing food right in the heart of the Gas Lamp district.  What made it a great experience was the attitude, and courtesy of the server Adrean.  He had full knowledge of the menu - like no other server I have ever came across. The food was exceptional, I forget exactly what we had, but it was a breaded Tuna steak, and seafood pasta. More...

We came here for late brunch. We had an excellent experience. Located in the heart of Gaslamp, this place boasts an amazing wine collection, a great happy hour menu, and really good beer choices for the beer fanatics.I had a chicken pesto sandwich with salad. The salad was delicious and had the perfect amount of seasoning and dressing. The sandwich was fresh and tasty. Not too oily or fatty either. Coffee was great and fresh. Mimosa was pretty good as well (on the happy hour menu). We got the sausage platter as an appetizer. It had only one small sausage split in two so don't expect a lot of food *it's a small platter* but it comes with tasty salad. We were all happy with the service, prices, and good. More...

What a great experience! I made a reservation online for 13 to celebrate my birthday. 5:30 on a Saturday night in the Gaslamp is usually busy but the restaurant seemed pretty empty until about 8:00pm.  The waitress was on top of our party the entire night.  They have a great happy hour menu until 6:00pm.The food is amazing - it is pricey but worth it. I had the Hearts of Palm salad with lightly breaded scallops; the scallops were not overly cooked, and did not taste fishy.  The salad itself was a little over-dressed in the vinaigrette but so light with arugula, hearts of palm, brie cheese and cranberries. I also tasted the grilled shrimp cocktail, filet minion skewers and meatballs.  The flavors in the food is awesome!  Note: the only complaint I have is that my aunt had a Living Social deal (it was honored with no issues); she called to make sure she could use it and whoever she spoke to told her that it wouldn't be an issue but if we were not there exactly at 5:30 they would not hold the table.  I had to put a credit card on file after I made the reservation and was not told this information.  Being late was not a concern because I was staying downtown, but I felt that comment was unnecessary, especially with such a large party that could potentially spend a good amount of money. Sunday before intervention...wanted something that is fairly closed and quick where we can see the line...$5 mimosas (all flavors) and $5 sangrias. That price will beat the prices at intervention...so we decided to grab a few drinks before the real party. Our server was nice, we checked in thru yelp and got bruschetta. The bruschetta was yummy, it wasn't the hard bread cooked 5x in the oven, it was nice and soft and right crispy level. The tomato on it was also fresh. Now maybe food before we get drunk...I ordered the Italian Sandwich and my friends ordered the turkey sandwich. Stupid me, I didn't read the description of that sandwich and thought it was a traditional Italian sandwich... not knowing that it was just cheese, basil and tomato. I hate main courses without meat...I was sad...but my friends didn't eat their turkey sandwich and we switched half. It was a good turkey sandwich. I did take a bit of that Italian, it wasn't bad, but not my style. I'm a carnivore! More...

Place has excellent food! My wife and I had the lasagna (one of the best we've had) and the Pasta Toscana and both were outstanding. Very cool atmosphere and can sit either in or outside. We started off with the Yelp deal - 1 Free Bruschetta appetizer with purchase of a drink. Not sure if it was there usual portion but we got two pieces of bruschetta. The fact that the balsamic dressing had a great flavor and they topped it with fresh tomatoes and basil, made up for the amount. My mom and I ordered a glass of Moscato wine. We ended up drinking two each. My mom has the pesto chicken penne and it was delicious. I ordered the Chicken Marsala and it was perfectly cooked. Our waiter was really friendly and made suggestions. He also served us some bread with marinara sauce while we waited.4 stars = 1 star loss due to salad being on a hot plate and amount of appetizer.Coming back for sure when I return to San Diego. The food servings were proportionately filling. I left satisfied and  ready to start my day. I had eggs, potatoes, bacon, and wheat toast. The decor was unique. This was a nice little spot to eat at whicle in town for Comic-Con. Despite the amount of people seeking a place to eat and the impromptu shark parades outside, they still managed to seat us in at least 15 minutes. The servers and hosts/hostesses were attentive and friendly, despite the craze taking place around us. It's time for a great glass of wine and a great bowl of pasta, it's time for Toscana's!Last night was my first time visiting this Gaslamp go-to spot. My friend and I were seated on the patio which, with it's location, was the perfect people watching spot. We both ordered a glass of their house Chardonnay which was nice. Then followed that up with a tasty appetizer. As good as the entree was, I think our appetizer was the best part of the meal. We got the Bruschetta. Yum! Four pieces, perfect for sharing, and drizzled with some balsamic, parmesan cheese and tomatoes. Usually the bread for a bruschetta appetizer is too hard and burnt, but Toscana's bread was just perfect. Soft and just crispy. For my entree, I got the Toscana Chicken Pasta, subbed the spaghetti for penne, and added vegetables ($4). The sauce was a mix of their hearty marinara and Alfredo sauce. I loved it! I got to admit that it's been a while since I had pasta of any kind, but this dish was definitely a winner. It was pretty big so I took half home for an appetizer. Can't wait  to have Toscana Chicken Pasta, part 2. My friend got the Sausage and Peppers pasta. She loved it and also took half home. Overall good experience. I'd love to go back for their breakfast, took a peek at that menu and it looks delicious. A nice lunch on their patio would also be great. More...

Stopped over at Toscana this morning for a couple lattes to go, and upon leaving, had not only my drinks but a new friend. Gio is very personable and friendly, and also very skillful in the science of making coffee taste good. The cafe could not have a better location - right off the entrance to the Gaslamp Quarter.  Things get busy most days by lunchtime, so timing is everything. I've been traveling to San Diego for work and keep seeing this, as it's on the same block where I stay (Hilton), but never tried it. After coming into town late last Sun. evening, I decided I wanted something closeby and casual as I was tired. Checked out the menu online and noticed they had a great selection of salads- I wanted a salad and a good wine. I sat outside around 8:30ish, right next to a heat lamp- perfect temp! The waitress, Seana, was extremely friendly and engaging and made some recommendations. While I was looking for something real light, she twisted my arm into trying the scallops on a bed of risotto. I was very hesitant because restaurants NEVER make a proper risotto; they are usually too wet of a consistency. Seana also recommended a glass of wine based on my preferences. The wine was great, and the meal even better. I give this a 5 star because it is the FIRST and ONLY restaurant I've been to that understands how to make a risotto. It was the wild mushroom one.I enjoyed a leisurely dinner and second glass of wine, while they started closing up. Although Seana had to keep working and close up the outdoor tables, she made sure to continue engaging in conversation with me. I'm traveling there again tomorrow and will most likely have a meal there during this trip. Highly recommend. More...

I ate at Toscana after attending the RnR San Diego Health Expo for brunch. Overall I loved the food and service was good (after the fact. I will explain). I would go back and try another dish when I am back in San Diego. The wait was about 10 minutes during Saturday brunch time (not bad). We were seated in the back patio, becuase I wanted to be outside but not in the sun. Unfortunately (i think) since we were in the back patio and the busy brunch hour, we waited for a while before our server came to take our order. Once we got over that waiting period, everything else was great. We weren't in a hurry so the waiting wasn't too bad for my bf and I. The server was very aware for making us wait and comp our drinks. We ordered the Florentine Omelet (recommended by the server, b/c So California Omelet wasn't available) and Italian Salmon Carpaccio. Nice!! The staff here really make you feel welcome and special.  Our previous visit was months ago but we were treated so well then, we could not pass up another opportunity to dine here.  They have an excellent wine list or you can just ask for a glass of their house wine, you will not be disappointed! Came here through a living social deal.  I made dinner reservations for a Saturday night.  I'm not a snoot or anything, but for having made reservations, I would assume that they would give me a better table than the one I initially got.  This table was a cramped 2 seater table, at the back of the restaurant, right in front of the exit door.  When I sat down in my chair and leaned back, my back pushes the door handle all the way back.  WTF  Was what I was thinking.  I felt like I was put at a table that they put together cos there was nowhere else to seat us.In any case, I couldn't deal with it and asked to move to another table that I saw the patrons were finishing up at.  They were accommodating and I appreciate that.  Our waiter was fantastic and super nice and our food was delicious. My bf ordered the seafood blush and I ordered the Pescada.  Both dishes were superb.  I'm very picky with my risotto and they made mine perfectly and the sea bass was soo good, seared to perfection. We both enjoyed our meals and our glasses of wine.  Only docking one star cos of the seating situation.  If I were them, I would never put a table there..makes customers feel unwelcome. As far as cafes and wine bars go, this place is legitimate. They have a great selection of wines by the glass, especially the Montepulciano. If you go in, be sure to try their prosciutto wrapped mozzarella with balsamic reduction, and either their lobster ravioli or jumbo pan-seared sea scallops for an entrée. The scallops come with some of the best risotto I've ever tasted, creamy with the perfect balance of lemon zest.  If you're there for lunch, go with their French dip, which comes with an amazing Au Jus. My red-headed server was both knowledgeable and attentive, which made our experience all the more pleasant. I was just here for the first time this past Wednesday night about 8pm with my brother and his girl, both of them from Iowa visiting me for the week. We had a Living Social deal to use up and we wanted to try something a little more high end and formal so there we were...Speaking for myself and what I got....this place is pretty darn good indeed! One of only 2 classier Italian like places in SD I have dined at in my 8 months here now. I ordered the special of the day which was an 8 oz filet mignon with sea scallops over spinach risotto and veggies. (see picture). The price was $34(high in my humble opinion). Although a much smaller portion then I would like (I am a BIG eater as most of you know from my eat feats) but its the quality and presentation you pay for here. They delivered on that! Filet I ordered medium well and it was melt in your mouth good first bite to last. Risotto was soft and fluffy with a very nice meld of spinach and cooked, seasoned veggies. Two giant sea scallops topped my filet as did a delicious sweet glaze of some sort I cant recall the name  of. One major note was the service we got. Derek was our server and this guy is good! He knew the menu specials without flaw. Every detail of the food, prep method, flavor, variances etc....this guy knew his stuff. He was sure to keep tabs on us all evening to make sure we were well cared for during our meal. I have not seen service like this in a long time from any kind of restaurant. This alone makes it more appealing to come back in when your treated like we were here. The major draw for my return is the fact that they have made from scratch carrot cake on the dessert menu which is my ALL TIME favorite dessert item ever. If it were not for our post dinner plans I would have had a slice for sure! Check them out and ask for Derek. You wont be disappointed. More...

I got the lasagna with the blush sauce, my fiancé got the lasagna with the Bolognese, both were good! The spaghetti and meatballs were delightful and so was the pasta with the chicken! Prices were reasonable as well! Make sure to try the gas lamp martini!! Our waitress was super friendly and consistently checked up on us! Her name is Karen. She always kept a smile and was super nice!! Very little wait as well. Make sure to come here for your Italian fix!! Great service and great food! More...

The staff was very accommodating. It was Comic-Con weekend at this place was packed!!! They were still fast and very friendly! The establishment was very clean and the food looked amazing. Decorated very nicely!I hope to stop in again sometime when they aren't so busy. More...

Toscana is awesome! I've been to Toscana quite a bit because every time I go the food is great and the service matches the quality of the food! A lot of the employees have been there for a few years, so I have been helped by the same people numerous times. The fact that so many people have been working happily at the same place for so long really says to me that the ownership and management staff is really doing something right. I don't want to mention any names for fear of leaving someone who deserves recognition out. I will say that most of the waitstaff remembers my name, and often greet me with a smile and my name. Some of them even know my order which is really cool. The general manager Nate even comes by every now and again to check on my food and experience, especially when he sees I am bringing in non familiar faces on business or fun get togethers. He is always very friendly and helpful if we have any questions or concerns.Their coffee is great, every now and again I will stop by just for coffee. They have a number of skilled baristas and a very wide variety of options of drinks to choose from. Their breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all equally to die for! Their breakfast consists of a number of different omelette options, but I really really like the stuffed French toast. Their potatoes that come with most breakfast entrees are amazing!Their lunch is very versatile; ranging from all different kinds of sandwiches & wraps, to salads, and different kinds of pastas. I really like the French dip and blackened tuna wrap, but their pastas are awesome too. I haven't tried too much else because I really like what I normally get, but other people I have brought in have really enjoyed other entrees. Their side salad comes with the best dressing I have ever had in a restaurant, and they make it in house! I've bought it a few times just to take home and use with my own food. It's THAT good!Their dinner is just as impressive as their other menus. The selection of seafood entrees is really impressive. The risotto they serve with a number of their entrees has amazing texture and accompanies the seafood so well. In addition to that: their beer and wine lists are great! They serve a number of good local beers and their wine selection is very large. I often have trouble deciding so I just ask my waiter/waitress to recommend something, and more often than not they are spot on!I really like the food, service, and ambiance of the restaurant. I love bringing new people to Toscana because they always leave impressed. I recommended everyone check this place out and bring friends! It provides a fun atmosphere with a very upscale setting. I already loved this place, but this weekend at ComicCon they won me & my friends over for life.On Friday night 5 of us walked into Toscana right as the kitchen had closed. When the owners heard how hungry and tired we were, they offered to keep the kitchen open long enough to get our orders in.  They even extended this courtesy to a couple of friends who joined us a few minutes later. They instantly made a long table for us on their patio, we were attended to nonstop, despite how busy they were, and we ended up eating a delicious meal. I recommended the restaurant to everyone who was visiting this weekend and everyone I sent here during ComicCon came back with rave reviews. Great food, great service, PERFECT location. At this point I've had both lunch and dinner there, been there for a baby shower, a cocktail, you name it. Every experience, totally consistent. A local favorite. More...

Taste of Tuscany Sampler Plate is an assortment of their most popular items and perfect for sharing: fresh, house-made Bruschetta, assorted imported cheeses, Toscana Mediterranean Dip, Kalamata olives, assorted Italian Delicatessen Meats and grilled Garlic Crostini. The prosciutto wrapped mozzarella & basil drizzled with a balsamic reduction was fabulous! The reduction was really the star and made everything taste better. The white cheese, when dipped into the reduction, turned it into a dessert, just like the old country where premium aged balsamic vinegar is drizzled on thin slices of parmesano reggiano as a dessert. The charcuterie of mortadella and salami were perfectly sliced and glistening with their gorgeous natural fat. The port, sage, and cranberry cheeses worked well when combined with the meats for different flavor experiences. The Mediterranean Dip was hummus like, but not lemony at all. It was silky and matched perfectly with the sliced focaccia. You could tell it was homemade as little pools of olive oil would pop out as scooped it was out of the ramekin forming little pools of epicurean delight. Thumbs up, way up! Paired with Saxon Brown Semillon 2008; tasting notes: fruity nose, green apple flavor on the palate, well-balanced, low acidity.Jumbo Pan-Seared Sea Scallops served with a White Wine Buerre Blanc Sauce on a bed of Mushroom Risotto and side Lemon Oil Arugula Salad. The scallops were seared to perfection, tender and tasted like buttery crab meat. The risotto was cooked al dente with a beautiful texture and flavor from the mushrooms. The arugula salad added a peppery flavor to the dish and pulled everything together. Thumbs up, way up! Paired with Patz & Hall Chardonnay; tasting notes: mild acidity with licorice flavor throughout. More...

Maybe it was a break from bland conference food or just maybe this gem shines for breakfast, but I thought this place was pretty great. I ordered full breakfast from this place. The eggs were cooked just right, the country potatoes were seasoned just right, the toast was good and the fruit was fresh. I feel that this place is slightly overpriced, but its proximity to the convention center saved me from a bagel and cheese from starbucks. I recommend this place to anyone in a conference and needs to get a good meal before being locked down for hours. As always my fellow Yelpers, happy feasting! More...

my boyfriend and i did the living social deal as well, and like many other reviewers, we had a GREAT experience! i had to write a review to try to help raise the star rating because i would have avoided a 3 star restaurant had it not been for the living social!SO we got there at 5 and they let us order happy hour drinks during happy hour AND start our deal!  NO other restaurants do that!  $12 pitchers of FANCY beer - i'm talking arrogant bastard, blue moon, other fancy ones that my boyfriend likes...also, delicious $5 red sangria!i agree with the review stating that the toscana sampler ($18.95) was not provided as described.  had i not already felt like i was STEALING from them with the amazing living social deal, i would have sent it back/asked for the missing tapenade etc., but the limitless livingsocial had us happy!  i would buy the livingsocial deal again in a heartbeat (although all things considered we ended up spending $120 - the total would have been $150 plus a $30 tip so $180, they subtracted all of the food and we had to pay for our happy hour pitcher/2 glasses of sangria and tax).  we will also definitely return for their stellar happy hour! Overly friendly, but thankfully not obnoxious service (the place was like a ghost town so why not load attention on the only restaurant goers in the joint) for breakfast. The Italian theme is obvious beyond the name--there are Italian countryside paintings and a rather amped up aria or six in Italian that play on a loop. In other words, you won't suddenly ask yourself, "Am I in a French restaurant?!"I had the florentine omelette, which tasted a bit too healthy for my palate. I get these veggie drenched dishes and then wonder why I can't taste the cheese. Silly me. Anyhow, came with mushrooms, spinach, and fontina. The sourdough had liquid butter on it which meant no guilt for eating what was probably 6 tbs of butter. What you don't know, uhm, can't hurt you?My friend had the smoked salmon, which was beautifully plated. She also said it was delish. The coffee is above average and, unlike other faux swank places, you actually get free refills here.Mwahahahah! More...

With so many restaurant's to choose from it's really hard to make the right decision especially when you're visiting from out of state and want to make every meal enjoyable. For dinner the menu offers a great varety of choices and unique dishes not found in many restaurant's. Our waitress Ann was extremely friendly and knowlegeable about menu dishes, our meals arrived promptly and were delicious. Food portions were appropially sized and the carrot cake was the perfet choice to end a great meal.I highly recomend Toscana cafe as a MUST for breakfas and dinner if you're visiting the San Diego area. We came here because of a LivingSocial deal.   The deal was awesome !   It included two glasses of proseco, two appetizers, two entrees, and two desserts.    We were allowed to get ANYTHING on the menu.  Usually those deals limit you to select items but everything was game.   It was a LOT of food, so we packed what we couldn't eat and had it for lunch the next day.   I had the sea bass and my wife had the veal.   The biggest surprise was how good the risotto was.   I wasn't going to order the sea bass because I didn't feel like eating risotto but I'm sure glad our waitress suggested it.   Our only complaint was that the desserts seemed pre-made, but that's fine.  It was still good and we ate it all up.   We'd definitely go back again.A huge bonus that night was finding a parking spot right out in front on the curb on a Saturday night.  It was good sign from above. Came here with my boyfriend with a Living Social deal that included two apps, two dinners, two desserts and two glasses of prosecco!  It is right in the heart of the Gaslamp and had a really nice patio; it was too cold so we sat inside by the window.  I really liked the decor; pretty cozy and what you would expect, but they layout in the corner is a little weird and cluttered (not that that would take away from the review).  Anyway, our waiter was very nice, friendly and helpful. The menu choices looked great!  We chose the following:Toscana Grilled Skewer Sampler 12.95One skewer each of our marinated Grilled Shrimp Scampi, Grilled Italian Chicken, and Grilled Filet Mignon served on a bed of Baby Arugula tossed with Olive Oil and Lemon(The shrimp and chicken tasted good, but there was only one tiny skewer of each!  I guess I didn't read it well enough, but found it a little underwhelming.  It did come on a nice greens salad though) Prosciutto Wrapped Mozzarella 15.95Fresh Mozzarella Cheese wrapped with Prosciutto di Parma and fresh Basil, sereved with Extra Vrigin Olive Oil and aged Balsamic Vinegar served on a bed of Mixed Greens(I don't eat prosciutto but my boyfriend said this was very good!)The meal that I got was not on their website menu, but it was called Blush Seafood or something.  The sauce was great and the seafood was good, but I was a little bummed that they only gave 2 shrimp and 2 scallops; one would have thought at least 3 and 3 for the price.Pescado Milano 32.95Fresh California Sea Bass, lightly pan-seared and topped with herb marinated grilled Shrimp, served on a bed of Risotto with Caper Beurre Blanc Sauce and a side of sautéed AsparagusMy boyfriend got the above meal which he really enjoyed.  Everything about it was good, but he said he would have been a little disappointed if he had paid full price for it.For dessert, I got the Lava Cake and he got the tiramisu.Overall, we had a great dinner and were for sure full.  I was a little bummed about the small portions of seafood, but the meal portions were good.  We felt that the deal was a good value, but wouldn't have paid full price.  Would recommend this place to others looking for a place downtown, but would probably only come back for drinks, apps and people watching on the patio! Consistent in Service and Food! I've been here a few times and each time I dine here the service is absolutely great.  I wish I got the name of our last server we had (I think she was Thai).  The restaurant can get busy during dinner hours so try to make a reservation online.  Food: The complimentary toasted bread is BANGIN'.  Yup so good that I ask for second servings.  Prosciutto Wrapped Mozzarella:(Fresh Mozzarella Cheese wrapped with Prosciutto di Parma and fresh Basil, sereved with Extra Vrigin Olive Oil and aged Balsamic Vinegar served on a bed of Mixed Greens)Grilled Filet Mignon Skewers:(Tender chunks of seasoned Filet Mignon grilled and then glazed with a Balsamic Vinegar Reduction served on a bed of Baby Arugula tossed with Olive Oil and Lemon)Insalata Caprese:(Traditional Caprese Salad of sliced Fresh Mozzarella, Roma Tomatoes, fresh Basil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil and aged Balsamic Vinegar)Chicken Pesto Penne:(Grilled Chicken Breast, Sautéed Fresh Vegetables tossed with our House-Made Basil Pesto Sauce served on Penne Pasta)Classic Shrimp Scampi:(Jumbo Shrimp, sautéed with Butter, White Wine, crushed Garlic, and Extra Virgin Olive Oil, finished with fresh Parsley and Parmesan Cheese and served with a side of Spaghetti Pomodoro and Baby Arugula Salad)All these dishes were so good.  My favorite dish was the Shrimp Scampi.  It was something about the lightly breaded shrimp.  Great cocktails and generous wine pour. We dined at Toscana Cafe and Wine Bar last night. We had a Travel Zoo voucher for a dinner for two. We started with the appetizer sampler. It featured bruschetta, hummus, a couple assorted meats, and cheese. It was okay but I wouldn't necessarily order it next time. Our entrees were what turned the dining experience around. I had Sea Bass on a bed of mushroom risotto. It was flaky perfection. My partner had seared scallops. They were large and cooked just right. We had two glasses of red wine with dinner as well; both paired well with our entrees. We finished withered flour-less lava cake. Small but delicious. The server was attentive and friendly. Had a nice simple dinner after going to an event at the convention center. Started out across the street at the Spaghetti factory but were told the wait was going to be 45 minutes. Came here because we were already in the mood for spaghetti, got seated and served right away. The food was tasty. We had the spaghetti pomodoro with meatballs and the chicken pasta toscana. The spaghetti was just a little al dente, which is good, and the meatballs and the chicken were fine but just a little bland. The sauces were good--I would have liked a bit more sauce on mine. The service was good. It was not a spectacular dinner out but good enough overall for 4 stars. More...

I honestly don't know where to start!?  My husband and I were in San Diego celebrating our anniversary, and wanted something romantic, but not overly pricey, and we could still go out in the Gas Lamp District and enjoy our night.  From beginning to end, our evening was perfection.  First, our server, Derrick, was EXTREMELY kind, hospitable and knowledgeable.  He gave recommendations on wine and food pairings throughout the evening.  Every bit of food that came out was amazing, and don't use that word lightly.  We started with the mozzarella wrapped prosciutto.  It is, indeed, and delicious as it sounds!  But the main item of our affection that evening was the yellow fin parmesan crusted ahi tuna.  I can't even put into words how delicious this entree was.  If I was a celebrity chef, I would definitely have this as one of "The Best Things I Ever Ate."  I had the filet, and it was delicious, but I salivated over my husband's dish throughout the evening.  SERIOUSLY...it's that good!  We finished the night with more red wine and a scrumptious chocolate "muffin" dessert.  (My server would be so angry, because he introduced the dish much more eloquently.)  This was an experience.  We were there for roughly an hour and a half to two hours.  I cannot say enough, again, about our server.  He really made the entire anniversary weekend for us.  Whenever we decide to road trip from Vegas again, we will definitely be stopping here and asking for Derrick again.  Thank you for providing this evening for us. I would have rated this place 5 stars, but the food took quite a while. Other than that, you HAVE to get a salad with their house Italian dressing. It was one of  the best Italian dressings I've ever had. Really good! I split the Chicken Pesto Panini with a friend and it was deeeelicious! This place has some patio seating (where we sat) in addition to the beautiful indoor space. I had a much needed Bloody Mary, which they served with olives instead of celery, but the drink was good. Really liked this place. Got here early enough for happy hour so took advantage of the $5 glass of Sangria to start. In my opinon, it was like fruit punch HI-C with a slight tinge of booze. Not very strong. For an appetizer, I got the crab-stuffed mushrooms. DELICIOUS. For my entree, I got the gnocci. Also delicious. There's more of the hearty marinara sauce and veggies than there is gnocci, just to warn you. My boyfriend got the lobster ravioli, which was also delicious. His dish had the same issue with the proportions though -- far more sauce than ravioli. One thing: The foccacia bread is disappointingly cold. I really wanted it to be warm and wonderful...but, no.I finished up with a glass of Zinfindael. Can't go wrong there. This place is great if you're going to a Padres game after. Highly recommended.
