Q&As

Most garages are potentially suitable for conversion, as they do not require planning permission. It depends on what the ultimate aim of the conversion is. If someone would like to use the garage as an extra bedroom, then of course it is desirable for the garage to be attached to the rest of the property. This also reduces costs, as various plumbing and electrical connections are often easier to install, rather than in the case of a fully detached garage.

Firstly, we have to survey the garage to see the potential work which needs to be done. For example, checking the condition of the walls, floor and roof. If the roof is not in a suitable condition, we can start by renovating the roof. Next, we can lay the new floor, perform wall insulation. We then install plumbing, electricity and heating. Finally, we can fit in new furniture or kitchen appliances and tiles, depending on the use.

If the roof has a suitable height, and is in a good condition, then the loft can be converted into the required space. If the roof is old, or too low, then the entire house would have to be raised upwards, which is going to cost a lot more. The first thing to do is obtain planning permission from the council for the loft conversion. If the council agrees to the proposed work, then the process can begin.

The roof needs to be opened, and we need to insert steel beams to support the new floor. We then lay the new floor. We continue by creating a dome, by laying flat walls for the conversion.
