We enjoyed the Puppy Course very much. We felt very confident and had a lot of trust in Mike and the way he managed the dogs. Mike was always very calm, pleasant and in control. We learnt a lot about how to handle Rosy and the information/advice Mike gave us was very, very useful. These are:
Separation anxiety
Feeding (best times, do's and don'ts)
Type of food to give (Rosy absolutely loves fish. Never knew dogs like fish)
Using a whistle (wow, this is great for recall)
Meeting other dogs (she’s not quite there yet but we are still talking her to town) We’ve booked a 4 week course at Marbury.
How to teach Rosy to focus/wait.

Mike always had time to allow us to ask questions and advice. The price of the course was reasonable. I would definitely recommend this course to other dog owners.

Mike is a very knowledgeable and experienced dog trainer. His guidance is calm and his positive and structured training methods extremely well instructed. I have trained both my dogs to advanced level with Mike and wouldn't go anywhere else. There is good variety and advancement of technique in the classes. On 1-2-1 sessions Mike is very good at quickly identifying training tools to implement, which if followed consistently as needed, result in positive outcomes. I have had good success with impulse control and behavioural improvement following Mike's instruction. More...

This was the worst dog training session I have been to. So we paid for a 6 week block of puppy training session and they were absolutely appalling. You spend about 40 minutes listening to him talk about his dogs and marbury park and only 5 minutes of the puppies doing any work. And to top it off he only gave 5 lessons out of 6 and no mention of a refund for the 6th session which was caused by him having to cancel. We have since found an alternative trainer where the puppies do 45 minutes of activity rather than just sitting there doing nothing. Overall this was the worst dog training I have ever been to would not recommend at all!!! More...

Hi John. Sorry to read your review, I had no idea that your experience of the course was so different to the positive feedback I’ve received from the others who’ve attended this course and many others over the years. The course follows the guidance set by the Kennel Club with a different theme each week on one aspect of puppy care or another and I think it’s very unfair for you to say that the puppies do so little. This is an educational course, not an activity session. I also have to take issue with your comment about the last class being cancelled. It wasn’t cancelled, it was postponed by a week because of a new heating system being fitted in the hall. The course was completed by everyone other than you.

Dog Training

Very professional, pleased with the quick feed back

I was recommended by my vets to visit Mike with my puppy and he has been brilliant. I have attended a few different dog trainers over years of owning dogs and whilst everyone has their own way I have found Mike's approach to be straightforward and easy to understand. He is open and direct and extremely knowledgeable about the day to day issues of owning a puppy and how to train it effectively. He uses the right balance of reward based training without too much fuss and never uses any sort of fear based correction techniques. I also brought along my 6 year old Labrador to his intermediate classes and both Mike and the other handlers are very welcoming and friendly. Molly and I can't wait for Saturday mornings and his approach has really helped me to focus on my dogs and ensure they are well trained. I have to say if you don't like the truth then you may feel at times awkward when Mike corrects YOU rather than your dog but as a responsible dog owner it is always down to my lack of consistency, control or correction which leads to problems with my dogs. It's not the dog's fault and as long as you are able to understand that Mike is there to help and support you then I think he really is the best dog trainer I have met. More...

Q&As

The Well Heeled Dog Club is run by me, Mike Flannery, an experienced dog trainer who has twice been nominated for Kennel Club 'KCAI Trainer of the Year' award. At the Club, we show you how to improve your dog handling skills and build a great relationship with your dog. And we also offer opportunities to socialise with other people and their dogs, which is a treat for you and your pet.

At the Well Heeled Dog Club we also provide weekly training classes for all levels of the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme (KCGCDS)

The thing that inspired me most was the first dog we brought into our home when we got married 30 years ago. He was Benson, a Boxer dog who was as mad and as energetic as a box of frogs! We made all the mistakes that people often do with their first puppy and we paid the price for it.
Training and encouraging Benson to settle was probably the steepest learning curve I've ever experienced. Since then we've had numerous dogs, each has been different in their own way and with each dog I've always trained a different discipline e.g. agility, obedience, search & rescue, flyball & gundog work. I've competed with my dogs and taken part in display teams up and down the country.
Training dogs has gone from being a hobby to what I do full time now.

I run classes, courses and 121 training for all ages of dogs and puppies.
From time to time people often need help with their dogs. It may be that you've got a new puppy and that you want to start them off in the right way. Or that you've taken on a rescue dog and you're not sure how s/he will behave in a group situation yet... Or maybe you've been struggling one of two things, like socialisation, recall training, separation issues or walking nicely on a lead?
If so, then I can help you and your dog to work together so that you enjoy the relationship that you have with them.
