This place is legit one of the places I need to go before I die. I've been coming here from when we still still lived in Jersey City since 2016. We travel an hour and a half for Thirsty Koala! It's that serious!Thirsty Koala has such a welcoming staff and owner! If you haven't tried kangaroo meat before, just know that Thirsty Koala serves it off menu. The burgers are huge but they do offer sliders if you're not ready to commit to a huge burger. ALSO, their Triple T dessert is heavenly. I would get on a plane for it and if they discontinue, (which please God, dont!) I'd protest! More...

Edit*** thank you KatherineFood was pretty solid. Place had a great atmosphere, but this was the worst service I've ever had. Took forever to get table cleaned, calamari was delicious but took a while cause the kitchen was "hopping."  I can get past that but it also took 20 minutes following finishing the calamari to get our entrees... seriously? All the while no apologies for the service, nothing comped even though we were clearly upset. To top it all off. She accidentally added something extra on the bill. Shan't be retuning. Solid house beer though Customer service made it right. Quality place! More...

The bread was fresh with a good tomato spread.  The beef meat pies and sausage rolls were both good but similar in taste profile and texture; the accompanying dips were also identical.  The lamb lollies were grilled well with sweet potatoes, salad, and pomegranate.  The hanger steak was a perfect medium well and already pre-cut, obviating any knife work.  The pork belly from another member of my party's entree was robustly meaty.  The desserts took quite some time to come but were worth it in taste and presentation; my lamington was comprised of light sponge surrounded by desiccated coconut.  Service was excellent as staff continually came by to inquire about our experience.  Payment was expeditious with the card scanner, permitting for an immediate electronic receipt. We've lived on Ditmars for 5 years now and this has been the best, most consistently great restaurant from day 1. I am the type of person who finds something on a menu that I love and then order it every time. But this place has so many superb items, from appetizers, to entrees, to burgers, that I have such a hard time deciding what to get every time I go. The owner is so nice. She's always there, always talking to customers, always trying to improve the menu based on what the customers want. Oh, and if you are vegan, gluten free, vegetarian, you all have tons of options, and every item is clearly marked on the menu if it is gf, veg, dairy, whatever. It is no surprise that this place has thrived the whole time we've lived here while a hundred other restaurants have closed. More...

Awesome place! Delicious food, gluten-free and healthy choices, great service and outdoor seating. Went with friends and we ate yummy food while feeling a nice breeze and we were treated so well! There were also yummy dessert choices, if you like fruit try the Pavlova. Highly recommend The Thirsty Koala for a perfectly enjoyable experience! More...

I really appreciate that the menu was so clear about what is gluten free. With that, they had so many options. I felt like I wasn't restricted at all. However, I sample my friend's dishes, as well as eating my own and they were definitely hit or miss. The Salmon is delicious but takes 25 min to cook. The kale side salad is bland AF. The kangaroo burger is bland as well. When asked beforehand what it tastes like the waitress said "it tastes like meat". Yeah, super helpful description. I did enjoy the soup of the day. I'd make that at home if I had the recipe. Truffle fries were pretty good. I'll add that the hostess was super kind and I really appreciated her patience and help. I'd try it again if I lived in the area but Astoria is quite the trek from BK. More...

This place is amazing. Thank you for being so allergen aware, the fact I can go there and fried calamari and fried chicken as a gluten free, dairy free, soy free individual is something I do not take for granted. I was in comfort food heaven! I cannot wait to go back for the fish and chips! The bartender also made me a delicious dirty martini, they actual understood what dirty means and you could not see through the glass! The staff is also so nice, the female hostess on Saturday nights is just the best and all servers were super friendly for it being such a busy night. It does get pretty loud as everyone is clearly enjoying themselves so not the place for an intimate evening, but nevertheless a guaranteed a good time. More...

I like how kid-friendly The Thirsty Koala is. They have high chairs and a changing table in the bathroom. A very nice staff member (I'm assuming she was the manager) gave my 2.5 year old a Boogie Board Scribble n' Play to draw on with while we waited for our food to come. At the end of our meal she even gave my daughter a complimentary vanilla ice cream with sprinkles :) More...

Had a 5pm reservation which we got there early they let us know that at 7pm they will be busy as they have a lot of reservations. So we were like are you going to kick us out? They were like no but just letting you know. We got the hint. The servers always checked on us.Buttermilk chicken was too salty in my opinion and the kangaroo burger was decent. The pork belly was goodI dont think i will come back but wasnt a bad experience More...

Thirsty Koala is simply a wonderful place- especially for those with dietary restrictions. As someone who has been strictly GF for 20 years- it is one of those restaurants that gives immediate comfort and assurance. GF beer? You got it. FRIED calamari- Yup. GF Beer battered Fish and Chips. Yes!  Not to mention every item menu notes if gluten, dairy free, soy free,  etc. Helpful and friendly service and a great menu with plenty of variety. I will not lie- for many first dates I have "happened" to suggest TK because it knocks it out of the park every time. Brunch, Lunch, Dinner, Dessert.  You can not go wrong! My favorite is the Roasted Acorn Squash- so delish and filling! More...

The food here is always great as well as their service. Today was no different. There was a small error on my bill which I noticed after, but I received a quick response indicating it would be taken care of. There are great vegan options and happy hour drinks are awesome. Tried their Thirsty Koala beer for the first time today as well as their Earth Chili bowl. It was delicious. More...

Came here for dinner last night with a friend after we found this place on Yelp & we were not disappointed. The restaurant itself is very cute with its decor, it looked great and they play up the Koala bear theme enough to do their name justice, but not so much that it's tacky or too kitschy. The service was great, our waitress was attentive without being there too often (restaurant was pretty slow when we arrived at 6:15) and the food was so good. We started with the lamb lollies and I got the roasted bbq pork belly which was so tender and so flavorful full, I'm honestly still thinking of them 24 hours later. I'm in East Elmhurst somewhat frequently for work, so I'll definitely be back during my next visit. More...

It is surprisingly difficult to locate a good "fancy" burger in NYC, but fortunately, The Thirsty Koala exists. This small bar/restaurant on Ditmars has a reasonable selection of food options. Some of our favorites are: 1) The Lot Beef Burger, which is just a big burger with a ton of protein, 2) Fish and Chips, which is made with flaky cod, 3) Fish Tacos, which is made with the same flaky cod found in the Fish and Chips. The Heaps Good salad is a good choice to accompany all that protein, and we find that adding a side Charred Kale is the only way to get enough green for the meal. Clearly Australians compete with Americans in the "who can consume the least amount of greens in a meal" contest. Food can arrive slightly slow, so having either the Halloumi Fries or a side of Fries is a good way to munch of something while waiting for the food to arrive. Service feels slightly disorganized, but we always seem to be able to get sufficient attention throughout the meal. More...

I stopped in The Thirsty Koala during happy hour when I stayed in Astoria and it was a pretty good experience. The happy hour drink prices are really good, but my drink was just okay. I got the dingo, which was a bourbon cocktail, but they used a pretty low quality bourbon and there wasn't anything super special about the drink. I'd probably just stick to the draft list next time. I got some halloumi "fries" for food, which were absolutely delicious. I'm a big halloumi fan, but never had it like this and the honey and mint really worked with the cheese! The price point for the portion size was a little high, but that was my only complaint with the food. Overall, I liked the Thirsty Koala, but would make a different drink choice if there's a next time! More...

It would be ideal to make a reservation,  but the wait time without was less than 10mins. The food was similar to any restuarant on the strip,  really didn't find anything special worth mentioning. The service was great. Waiter was attentive to our needs and food didn't take forever to come out.The Mini Australian Pastured Beef Pies and Fries could do with a different dipping sauce,  pretty bland dish. TheGrilled Australian Herb and Wattle Seed Crusted Lamb Lollies was ok.  The sweet potato salad is delicious, but the lamb is probably better well done. More...

Genuinely so impressed with dining at The Thirsty Koala. I'd ordered online before, but the service when visiting was FANTASTIC. Wow! The place itself is scream come in and join the crowd.  Friendly and welcoming! We sat at the bar to dine and drink, and socialize.  The bartender immediately greeted us, and ask if we'd like water.  I appreciated this because he gave us time to settle,  view the cocktail specials and make a selection with out feeling pressured.  The menu to short and simple with detailed explanations of each item.  I got the lamb chops and my friend order a burger.  The presentation of our plates were very appealing,  as we were looking for a homestyle restaurant,  with good food.  The Thirsty Koala, had everything we craved. The lamb was pefectky medium rare, flavorful and filling.  The burger/sandwich had just enough kick to it to get us back.  The ambiance was friendly and fun. And the servers kept a smile on their face.  Many customers were regulars, as I noticed they were referred to by name, a hug and their usual drink. Very good, super delicious food choices, I recommend everyone a visit there and certainly try the lamb chops. More...

I have never felt so welcomed and well treated. Every single team member had a smile on their face. The food is flavorful and amazing. The portions are great and the quality is out of this world. We ordered the wild sesame salmon served on Bok choy with a delicious sauce with a side of garlic mash potatoes, the lamb chop lollies that were paired with a maple pumpkin, arugula and pomegranate salad and lastly the calamari. I am soooo impressed with the service and quality of the food. I am coming back for sure. A great excuse to meet babe up from work! So good!!! I've came here once for brunch and enjoyed everything I ordered.  I decided to stop by for happy hour one night and I'm hooked.  Bartenders Matt, & Victoria are the best of the best drink mixologists, and chef Kathy does a wonderful job with the menu.  I love the soups, lentil soup so good.  The salmon plate---amazing and the salads are so yummy, add salmon as your protein.  As for appetizers, I love the Thea meatballs and if you're extra hungry to for the meat pie appetizer--sooooo good.  I'm hooked.  The drinks. I came here with a large group for a new and expectant moms brunch, and for the crowd we brought, the Thirsty Koala held up nicely. It was my first time here, however, so I was more focused on the food. Service was great - especially given our group size. But food seemed to be a bit cool by the time it came out so it was cold fairly quickly. This might be due to being such a large group but if the restaurant was packed with normal diners, then it would have been just as busy. It's location puts it on the other end of the neighborhood but I definitely want to try it again. I got the steak and eggs - everything was cooked as I wanted, but with how fast it got cold, the steak was difficult to eat and ultimately, I didn't finish it.Overall, the food *was* good, but if the food is cold when it's busy (and I get the sense this place is OFTEN busy for brunch), then that's a definite bummer. Coffee was good, too. More...

Family dinners can be hard to organise since we have two vegans, 1 vegetarian, 4 omnis who need meat options and 1 gluten free. Needless to say, the thirsty Koala delivered in all categories - everyone was so happy with their meal. The menu very clearly states what's vegan/gf and the waitress was so kind and explained everything to our group. We shared a couple bottles of wine that were great and all of the food was so good. Great food with even greater service. I made last minute reservations for 4 for Saturday night. We arrived a lot earlier than expected but they were extremely accommodating and seated us immediately. It's been several years since I've last dined here so I wasn't sure if their menu items have changed. I ordered the Grilled Australian Hanger Steak (I believe all entrees come with a side). The steak was cooked to medium-rare goodness but some pieces were a bit too well done and chewy. My friends ordered the Kangaroo Burger which isn't on the menu since they don't have it daily. The burger was definitely interesting to try. We were recommended by our waitress to not have the burger well done or it might be too tough. They opted for medium rare and they liked the burger but had a strong iron taste. Highlight of the night were definitely the sides: garlic mashed potatoes and french fries. Garlic mashed potatoes were perfectly seasoned and tasty and the french fries came with three different dipping sauces. Our server Ursula was extremely helpful in answering our questions regarding the menu. She also came over several times to check up on us and ensure everything was okay. Overall an extremely pleasant experience and we'll be back soon to try other menu items! More...

They also started doing bingo - Wednesday night at 8pm.  I am a huge fan .If you are a bingo winner there is a wheel that you spin- you could win free shots ,free drinks, gift cards or the gag prize which is the money$$$ . If nobody wins the money it goes into the following week. After two weeks of not having a winner the jackpot is over $560. Fish is really delicate, love the sauce !  I don't usually like to eat  Kale but theirs is delicious!  Get the Lamb Lollies too ! Thumbs up for this ! Just too bad they don't have kangaroo meat on the menu. Calamari looks smaller than on the pics. Ambiance is nice and romantic. This place is definitely recommended . More...

I've here twice in one week. Once to have brunch and once for a quick dinner takeout. When we came for brunch I believe the owner took care of us. She was very hospitable. She really was very attentive. We assumed she was the owner because she had a Australia accent and wasn't in uniform. The other workers were all very nice and attentive. I loved my experience!I am deeply grateful for this restaurant since I only eat organic food and was crazing a ihop styled brunch. Usually I can't find a place who offers all that I want that's organic. Eggs, bacon, pancakes, home fries, etc. or if I find a place the pancakes taste like grass or something. But the food was really good! I had the chicken tacos and I could cry how bomb the sauces were. I love this place and wish it was closer to my house. It's a 40 min drive one way. If they cater i will be definitely be using them for an event! ( Im an event planner) More...

This would be an unique and authentic destination even if it weren't for their emphasis on gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan options...but for those who prefer to or must avoid gluten and dairy especially, the Thirsty Koala is an absolute must-visit. Across a varied and robust menu - including tasty cocktails and a nice wine and beer list - there doesn't appear to be anything that isn't delicious. And for dessert, which can be a challenge for the gluten and dairy free crowd, there are more options than I've ever seen. And having tried most of them now, I can safely say there are no misses here.Special mention to the Fried Calamari, Meatballs, Fish & Chips, Hangar Steak...I could go on. Next time, which there obviously will be, I'm looking forward to trying the Kangaroo! For everyone in the borough it's a no-brainer, but this one is worth the trip even if you choose for some reason to live outside Queens. A great local sport that offers Gluten Free calamari which is awesome because my boyfriend has celiacs so he got to try it for the first time! I got a salad with interesting ingredients that I would never think to put together like pomegranate and haloumi. It was SO GOOD and with the grilled chicken added I had leftovers for two days. They have an extensive menu so I definitely will be returning to try other things.A little on the pricey side but it was a lot of food so it balances out. You can tell they put a lot of care into this place. The food is consistently good, even when serving items that would seem out of their wheelhouse. Would give 5 stars, but they've made some unfortunately changes recently for the sake of cost saving. Most entrees no longer come with sides and drinks have been hit with a shrink ray. The same amount of food and drink that used to costs 90 for me and my gf now cost $130. It is also noticeably understaffed. You'll go 15 minutes trying to flag down your server because they're pouring drinks at the bar. I hope they read this review, because these changes have us coming much less often and ordering less. The drink shrinking is especially egregious. They used to have huge margaritas, now they last 5 sips. I'm not ordering any more drinks than I used to, I'm just leaving sooner to keep the bill under $150. I thought I was being clever ordering my micro-cocktail without ice and they literally gave me a Dixie cup sized margarita. Cmon man. More...

Meat lover options- check. Brunch- check. Bottomless brunch- check. Even better. Visited for late lunch. Viewed the brunch h menu or " brekkies" but went for the traditional menu. We had both the Ned Kelly 2 sandwich with hangar steak and the steak tacos. Both were delicious. Steak cooked to perfection. Delicious flavors. The sandwich took a more sweet tone with a BBQ sauce, onions and feta cheese, while the tacos had a cabbage slaw and more savory tone. The shoestring fries were also delicious. Menu is full of enticing options, including stuff for gluten-free and vegetarian. We got the fried half chicken to split, along with the fried calamari and fried cheese to start. Each dish was really delicious, especially the fried chicken. The waitress warned us that the chicken could take up to 30 minutes because it was going to be made fresh. I have to say, the crispyness, juiciness and freshness of the chicken was top-notch and I would've waited even longer if I had to! prettttyyy decent spot I have to say. Came here with a group of 8. Waiters and host super friendly. It was the lunch menu so we got a bunch of thingsCalamari was good- tarter sauce and some sort of sweet soy sauce . No marinaraHaloumi- which is essential mozz sticks but think poly-o string cheese deep fried. It was different. Just not for meCorn and jalepeño fritters hands down the best appetizer. Delicious. We got the thea meatballs and it was a lil odd. I mean maybe it was to heavily coated , im not sure. It wasnt bad just different. The cocktails are legit here. Get the toddman avenue. Fantastic. So moving on, i got steak and eggs. Fresh tasting food no doubt. Steak was cooked medium, three eggs cooked over easy and grilled tomatoes. Bread was soft and fresh too. Enjoyed it for sure. My cousin had the french toast which was a crossaint french toast. Superb. Everyones food was good. The shoe string fries are addicting. Legit and fair pricing too id say. Well maybe because it was lunch but still. Check the pictures. Solid spot. Wont be disappointed. Ohh if youre an ambiance sort of person, its nothing special looks wise. I met some friends here for a brunch which turned into an early dinner. We arrived around 2-ish, and the place was super crowded.  We were a group of 6.  The hostess (and maybe the owner) was very nice, and told us we would have a 15-20 minute wait.  I was a bit skeptical, but we were seated within that time frame. We had a great waiter.  He was friendly and answered our questions.  Also, we had two people who had gluten intolerance, and that wasn't a problem.  This restaurant has gluten-free and vegan options. The service was, unfortunately, very slow.  We had to wait around 45 minutes for our food.  The waiter was very apologetic.I saw a kangaroo burger on the sign outside, and I couldn't resist.  I was warned that it was very gamey, but it didn't taste too gamey to me.  They had a sweet chili sauce that went well with the burger, which also had lettuce, tomato, and red onion.  As for the burger, it was okay.  It was something that I had to try once.  It was $20, which I thought a bit steep, so I  probably won't order it again.  The shoestring fries were great.  My friends had sandwiches, and one had the Australian "breakie," (even though we were eating at 3:30 PM).  They loved their food. While it was chaotic, the atmosphere was fun.  I'll definitely visit again and try some of their other dishes. I was beyond excited about all of the gluten free options and how the server asked about allergies/was knowledgable. They also value the ingredients they serve, which you can tell when tasting everything. I got my own GF garlic bread to start with a tomato jam which is a plus. The Halloumi fries were a generous portion for an appetizer (in a good way). The GF fried chicken served with mashed potatoes & charred kale, and the pork belly with sweet fries went beyond my expectations. My girlfriend and I have gone to Thirsty Koala a few times. The playful name is what caught us the first name, but the restaurant itself is what keeps us coming back. When you walk in, the decor is inviting and comfortable. (See how many koalas you can find!) Every time we go, there are only a few free seats, if any at all. We came here for birthday dinner with close friends. Made it just on time for Happy Hour, which were all the cocktails, some beer & wine. I ordered the Gingeroo and Dingo, worth it for the HH price. The six of us shared the lamb lollies, which were awesome! Haloumi fries and curly fries. For entrees:I picked the Hanger steak, cooked to medium rare, garnished with sautéed onions. The steak was cooked perfectly, and well balance with the sauce. None of the entrees come with side dish, so if you are hungry make sure to order a side dish. Service: The service was a little bit slow, maybe because it was busy, my friend ordered a drink that took almost to the end of her meal to arrive. Secondly, my friends were annoyed that the servers kept clearing the plates when it was not finished. Especially, working in the hospitality industry, you should always asked the customer if they are done eating before clearing the plates. Rounding up from a 3.5 here. I have mixed feelings about this place. I've been here twice now. The first time we got the lamb lollies (main dish) and the fish tacos. The tacos were pretty good. The lamb dish had 5 chops. Half of them were incredible, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. The other half was just okay. Not sure what happened there, but the only explanation I can think of is that they came from two different batches. The second time was for a friend's birthday lunch. We got the haloumi fries and the corn and jalapeno fritters- both excellent. It's also worth noting that the bread and olive tapenade they provide at the start of every meal is really good too. This visit, they had the lamb chops for an appetizer, where you get two pieces. So I went with that since I wasn't too hungry. The lamb was pretty good this time, but the caramalized pumkin it came with was way too sweet. It almost seemed like they took pumpkin that was at the end of its days and cooked it. We also got some desserts, the Pavlova and this avocado dessert, which I didn't have high hopes for, but was surprisingly good. Service was friendly both times, but a bit slow. More...

We ordered the "Coco Pomme Margarita" and the "Dingo" cocktails and calamari to start.  The cocktails were amazing and on their own, they're deserving of 5 stars, along with the calamari.  The calamari was crispy, fried, lemony and served with thai basil yogurt and sweet chili.  Best I've ever had.. After apps and first drinks, the waitress took our entree orders and our second round of drinks.  I was stupid hungry so I couldn't help but notice when our app plates were cleared, 25 minutes turned into 3-0..  My boyfriends dish arrived and [my] side with it.  He started nibbling but I probably looked like I was going to eat him, so he dropped his fork and waited with me.  5 painful minutes later.. kitchen doors swing open, my entree and [his] side arrive.  I *tried* not to be too bothered by it, because I understand they were packed wall-to-walll, but our waitress was amazing and comped us our drinks and apologized for that torturous wait- quickly became our hero and saved the day. Entrees:I ordered the pan-braised wild king sesame salmon filet.  The combined texture of sesame seeds and flakey seared crust and silken-melting inside was perfect. Beautifully marinaded with citrus, tamari, clover honey, garlic, and fresh ginger.  The filet was served on a bed of baby bok choy.None of the entrees come with a choice of sides, so for a pairing I added the charred lemon kale(without feta).  This had a great smokey flavor that I've not had before.  My boyfriend order the steak, and garlic mashed potato- which he seemed to really like.  We both have leftovers and we plan to finish them tonight. Valentine's day was maybe a mistake for my first time going here because it was way too packed, short-staffed, long wait BUT food was amazing and i'm already planning my next visit. More...

I've been here a few times. Most recently, we came here for an early dinner one night. I'm a gluten free gal and they have a ton of great options. The food was amazing. My only complaint was the unnecessarily loud terrible music! It made the whole meal unenjoyable. Food: We started with the meatballs, which are gluten free!! They aren't served traditionally but come with a delicious tzatziki-like sauce. We loved them. I had the eggplant Parmesan (GF) and my partner had the fried chicken. We both LOVED the food and the portions were quite generous. Being gluten free, I hadn't had a food eggplant parm in a long time and really enjoyed it. Great, balanced favors and nice texture- not too mushy like some eggplant Parms. Service: I was STARVING and our main course actually took quite a while to come out, but we quickly got over it when we tasted it. The servers were all kind and attentive. Ambience: Ugh I could not handle the horrible music! We were having an early dinner and they were playing terrible club-like music. It really killed the experience for me. More...

My friend and I came here after deciding against another place we found on Yelp. Since the restaurant didn't open until 5pm we had to waste time. We had Thea's Meatballs to start as an appetizer and the Calamari. The meatballs were delicious and the sauce that accompanied it was spot on! For entrees he got the steak tacos and I had the classic chicken burger. (Yes I kept it simple since I don't eat red meat normally so the meatballs was enough!) All In all it was a great meal. Everything we ordered was good, staff was friendly but my salad was missing avacado & walnuts which were both listed on the menu. The other strange thing was that the waitress walked over to say that they didn't have ricotta (also listed on the menu) but that her boss was going out to get some, but then they forgot two other ingredients? The salad wasn't a special and walnuts and avacado were apart of other menu items so were they hoping other people weren't going to get menu items with those two ingredients? More...

First brunch spot in 2017! But won't be my last in 2018! Thirsty Koala met all the expectations of a brunch spot! Located at the end of the Astoria train, on Ditmars Blvd. The restaurant can be busy on the weekends so make sure  you get a reservation in. If that's not your thing, that's okay! Because I went with my 2 out of towner friends, and we did brunch last minute, maybe waited 15 minutes max at the peak time. Interior was a very homey feeling but modern which I loved. It was also lively with music from oldies to top 40's jams. So what makes Thirsty Koala a hidden gem is that, it's a small brunch spot but with a big taste, and awesome customer service. They really make you feel welcome, and if you didn't the first time they'll sure to make up for it. Food was amazing, I wanna go back to try all the other huge entrees! Also a gem that I love here, is that they really do offer a boozy brunch, you get 90 minutes for mimosas, Bellinis , bloody Mary's and even sometimes they'll let you mix and match with their signature cocktails! All that jazz will probably cost you less than 40 dollars with your meal. Food was up to par, it'll fill you up so come hungry! I will definitely be back and I hope you guys check it out, escape the cold, let's go to Australia New York! More...

A solid 4 stars.

They're conveniently located in the corner of the most heavily touristy shopping strip. What lured us in was the food other people were eating while we passed by. They have outdoor seating as well as indoor seating. They offer free wifi (yay!) and the menu is extensive.

I had the fish tacos and they were delicious. The fish on the tacos were really crispy and tender and full of meat. It was flavorful and definitely one of the top fish tacos I've experienced. We also ordered the loaded nachos with chicken as an appetizer and it was huge. That appetizer is definitely worth an entree. We couldn't finish all the food because the servings were huge!

Cost is pretty darn cheap and very affordable.

Had a great meal at this terrific neighborhood restaurant last night. Mine was very satisfying vegetarian comfort food - split pea soup and a roasted acorn squash stuffed with mixed vegetables in a tomato sauce with feta cheese. My husband enjoyed his wild cod tacos and sweet potato ginger soup.I appreciate the great staff here, who've always helped make the place warmer and more enjoyable. Not as much of a fan of the two new-ish big TV screens added in the restaurant beyond the original one in the bar area that bombard diners facing them with commercials and "the game." Maybe they could keep those on only for special games and events? More...

Good portion sizes too! We all were raving about our dishes as we devoured them. I love that they offer breakfast til later in the day and that they have (actually tasty) gluten free bread. First time trying a kangaroo burger. I would say it's worth the experience just to try something new!More gamey then beef but less then lamb I think so it's a good in between. The texture of the burger was a bit loose and I think it could've been packed together tighter. The Ned Kelly is also an amazing sandwich, tender steak on a bed of cheese and onion jammy goodness. Another specialty they have here are the lamb lollies which were very delcious and not over powering in flavor at all. Mild and juicy lamb cooked perfectly. I managed to sample the fish tacos which surprised me how much fish they can fit on a taco. Finally, we get to the appetizer, I recommend the calamari (sweet sauce is my favorite) and the halloumi fries (who doesn't love fried cheese). Great Aussie food all around! I can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu!! More...

Staff was very reassuring about ordering from the gluten free menu. I ordered the calamari and beer battered fish and chips. Beer used in the fish and chips is a truly gluten free beer, not the gluten removed type. Fish and chips was a very generous portion and the sweet potato fries were delicious. The calamari was excellent, I loved their spicy sauce to go with, but wish they had some marinara to go with it as well. This was my first experience with Australian food. My friend and I were curious as to what Australian food consisted of so we decided to check this place out. It was a Friday evening and there was a bit of a wait to be seated. We killed time by taking pictures with the big and cute koala mom and baby stuffed toys at the entrance! When we were finally seated by this really sweet waitress, we were given menus and some fresh delicious bread with olive spread on the side. If anyone finds out where I can get the olive spread, please reach out to me to let me know! I need it in my life! There were so many options to choose from, but I'm still not entirely sure what Australian food is. For drinks, my friend got their unsweetened tea, but it was super caffeinated. He couldn't finish it. For appetizers, we got the corn and jalapeño fritters...so so good! Fresh ingredients and filled with cheesy goodness. The plate comes with sour cream on the side, which when paired together is not bad. For our main dish, we each ordered the quinoa burger. Again, the ingredients were really fresh (cannot get enough of their bread), but was a little bit dry. They listed bbq sauce under what the dish entails, but I barely tasted the sauce. We asked for more, and it was sooo much better! It's a place worth checking out. More...

Living in the area, this is a great place to take friends and family from out of town. My friends and boyfriend fancy the lamb lollies and kangaroo sliders. (Yes, real kangaroo!) I am allergic to all dairy, (yknow vegan before it was trending... kidding, I eat animal meat), and it's hard to go out to eat because of cross contamination. The Thirsty Koala does an incredible job of cultivating a menu with dishes for everyone's liking. Their earth chili and grilled veggies are my go to. But now, for another reason that keeps me coming back -- their bar! They have a full bar, and up to 10 beers on draught. Their wine and beer menu consists largely of Australian sourced options. And their happy hour (as of Fall 2017), is until 9pm* Monday - Thursday. (8pm on Friday) (According to their sign out front versus their menu). HH includes well and their signature cocktails (always order a Gabba), select wines and draught beers, and their house Koala beer. Whether you're a foodie, or visiting the area, this is a must in Astoria because you'll never find another spot quite like it. More...

I've always wondered what Australian food is. After eating at The Thirsty Koala, I am still not sure since the menu had everything under the sun from tacos to eggplant parm to flatbreads. That said, everything was delicious so I can't complain.I think the best part of this restaurant is how conscious they are of allergies and dietary restrictions. The menu is extremely detailed in calling out foods that are vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, contains nuts/dairy/soy etc. While I don't have too many dietary restrictions (just vegetarian), I was eating with a vegan person and a celiac person, so the care The Thirsty Koala took with calling these things out was definitely appreciated. They even offer a gluten free bread if you can't eat their regular homemade bread!Food-wise, everyone was very happy with the food (tacos, burgers, "sangas"). The standout for me was the eggplant parm. Funnily, I don't even order eggplant parm when I got to Italian restaurants, but my friend who has been to this restaurant several times before told me the eggplant parm was amazing so I gave it a chance. It was DELICIOUS. Great sauce, great flavor, great eggplant texture. It made me love eggplant parm again! I highly recommend this dish, but everything is really great here.Service is good (super helpful and attentive waitress), prices are reasonable, while I'm not in Queens often, I would definitely want to come back to this spot again if I'm in the neighborhood. This is my favorite place in the neighborhood and definitely the place I eat at the most. I've never had a bad meal here and I've tried most of their menu. Their brunch is excellent, I bring out of town friends here all the time to try their Pain Perdu (croissant French toast), which is always a real treat. Their gluten-free calamari is a lot more tasty than a lot of its gluten-having counterparts. I also really enjoy their vegetarian sandwich, the Bondi Jaffle. Their prices are very reasonable and service is usually very good (I've had some longer than average waits when the place was packed, but never to a point where it was grating). They are also very good about food allergies/intolerance or dietary restrictions. I've brought my gluten allergic sister here, as well as multiple vegetarian or vegan friends, and they've all raved about the place. The owner frequently comes out and checks on the guests and makes sure everyone is enjoying their meal, which is always a nice touch. The Thirsty Koala initially intrigued me, because it's labeled as an Australian restaurant.  Is it really Australian cuisine, and what does that even mean since Australia is a melting pot of cultures just like the US?  I'm not sure, but I do know that the food and service were excellent. My wife and I tried the meat pies with fries, the halloumi fries which were on the specials menu but that the chef said would be introduced to the full menu soon, the Melbourne salad- essentially a Greek horiatiki salad, and the crab cakes- another item from the specials board on the wall.  Everything was fresh and delicious.  The halloumi fries and the crab cakes in particular were standout that I would return for.  The mini meat pies were also great, and more in the stereotype of an English/Australian dish one expects from an Australian restaurant.  On a side note, I should say that I loved seeing the Greek influence on many of the dishes, because it makes me think the chef/owner knows that Melbourne has a huge Greek population, and perhaps the chef/owner is from there and relocated to Astoria where there's a huge Greek population (I have a whole back story here that I'm imagining).  There's even a "Thea's meatballs" listed on the menu.  Service was friendly and very efficient.  And, the chef came out at the end and personally stopped by every table to ask peoples' thoughts- a nice touch!Oh, and did I mention happy hour drinks?  $5 glasses of wine and cocktails- anything on one side of the drinks menu. Ambiance of the restaurant was nice, we came in around 2PM on a Sunday. There weren't too many customers so the service was pretty quick. It has a very cozy feel and the servers were friendly and helpful. They don't do lunch specials anymore and that was a little bit disappointing but they have a brunch menu (not the same). Now on to the food, I was told they serve the best calamari in Astoria so I had to give it a try. They weren't the best calamari I've ever had but pretty standard. They weren't the crispiest but had softer and tender texture to it. The 2 sauces (Thai basil yogurt & Thai sweet chili) that came with it were actually pretty impressive and really made the dish. They weren't greasy either which was a good thing, because calamari tends to feel very greasy if they aren't as crispy. The portion was what was expected for the price. So their main attraction (at least to me) was their Kangaroo Burger!! It was the reason why we came in the first place! Now you have to keep in mind when you are eating kangaroo meat that this isn't beef and it's not supposed to taste like beef. So don't complain that it doesn't taste like a regular beef burger because it shouldn't. Our waiter did a good job educating us on what to expect when trying kangaroo meat for the first time and he was right. It's a much leaner meat compared to beef and there is a "wild" taste to it. It is most definitely not as good as a beef burger BUT it is definitely worth trying. The hand-cut fries that came with it were really good as well. Very thin hand-cut fries that weren't oily. Getting kangaroo meat will cost you an extra $5.50 on top of the burger you choose. Mine came up to be ($19.50), which isn't cheap considering what I got.Last thing we ordered was steak and eggs, which were pretty standard steak and eggs. Steak has flavorful and well cooked. Portions were good on all three dishes and will definitely fill you up. I would come back to try their lamb, it's their most popular dish but it's kind of pricy ($30++). More...

First visit, we had the kangaroo sliders. Kangaroo is gamey and I expected that. They were alright, good for one time thing. For entrees, fish tacos and the quinoa cauliflower salad with salmon. I remember the additional salmon was around ~$4 extra for a total of ~18 for the salad. I was surprised when it came out, there was a ginormous salmon in the salad and it was perfectly cooked. The meat was tender. The salad portion was huge as well. Super happy.. at the time. Yesterday, I ordered the salad again with salmon and this time it was $10 extra. Sad because it was also dry, over cooked. It took a while to come out as well (I guess they're always busy?). I was kinda turned off by the inconsistency. The fish tacos were totally good as well but I also remember the next table ordered a vegetable (?) taco after we had ordered but they received a fish taco first to which they said they hadn't ordered but they kept anyway. They totally should've double checked so I was kinda peeved by it as we were super hungry! It took a long time to get all of our food and it came out all at once. The food was amazing so I wouldn't go below a 4 star on this joint. The ambience and servers were cool, too. Anyway, for the second meal, we also had the meat pies and fries with fish and chips. The meat pies were soo good. The chili honey sauce is an interesting twist. Totally used it with the fries. Omg the fries are amazing!! If your meal doesn't come with fries do order them! They're kinda stringy, curly fries but they got some density in them. Don't know what they flavored (prolly just s&p) them with but I was addicted. Back to the pies, 3 pieces is heavy between 2 people so def shareable with a group. Would def go back again to try the rest of the menu. More...

For someone with celiac disease such as myself, this is the perfect restaurant where I have multiple dish choices instead of just two or three at any other restaurant. Their food is very good! Great location for brunch. Lot of healthy options. FYI- the lamb and beef is halal. The waiter mentioned that to me as I entered the restaurant with my wife. I asked the question again to confirm about the halal part, the head chef come over and verified that the lamb is always halal and beef is halal depends on the shipment from Australia. The chef mentioned just ask before ordering. The last time I was there for brunch ordered the steak and egg, it was amazing More...

I had a great lunch here the other day! I ordered the quinoa burger with fries and it was absolutely delicious. I would have given this place 5 stars, but two things are holding me back:1. I was handed my food with a sauce on the side. The server told me that the sauce was on the side because it wasn't vegan (the burger was listed on the menu as vegan) and proceeded to ask me if I was vegan. I said "kind of" because I'm a vegetarian that *tries* to be vegan. I thought that the sauce might have had milk or cream in it or something. She started to walk away and I figured I should ask why it wasn't vegan so I did and she goes "there's fish in it"............ so there's a vegan burger on the menu that's served with fish sauce She almost didn't even tell me there was fish in it. I'm absolutely not okay with eating fish and was just really disturbed that I ordered a vegan burger that was served with a side of fish sauce and was only told it contained fish when I asked. The proper question would have been "do you eat fish" not "are you vegan"... there's a lot of room on the spectrum from vegans to people who don't eat fish. She was on the right track by putting the sauce on the side and asking if I was vegan, and I know she meant well, but fish sauce shouldn't come with a vegan burger under any circumstance. I'm sure any vegan/vegetarian would agree with me.2. The quinoa burger patty completely crumbled and fell out of the bun. I ate it with a fork and it was DELICIOUS, but I feel like if something is being served as a sandwich then I should be able to eat it like a sandwich.Other than these two issues, I had a pleasant experience here. I would have loved to sit outside but there was no open seating. The restaurant itself was clean and cutely decorated, and the staff was very nice! More...

Everything I have here is always so so good! I have a bunch of food allergies and they are always so accommodating. Highly recommend any of the tacos, my favorite are the vegan tacos with the earth chilly (which is amazing on its own), the lamb lollies and Thea's meatballs are so good and a favorite go to. They have rotating fresh seasonal fish on special and it is always so well prepared. Whenever I have friends in town I always bring them here and they love it as well. This was actually my first time in Astoria, and it did not disappoint! I came with a group of around 16 I believe so it was a pretty large group. Most of us got some type of fish, a few people got other things like drinks and some appetizers. I got the Ginger Braised Citrus Salmon Filet with a side of grilled vegetables for $22.50. It was a nice piece of salmon on top of some Bok Choy and it instantly reminded me of Chinese cooking. It could be because of the smell, but it smelled very familiar. The salmon was amazing, it was tender and it was very filling. However, the sauce was a bit too salty. Because it was on the bottom, the bok choy and salmon were naturally soaked in the sauce. The food was amazing, but the dish was just slightly too salty. The calamari that we got for an appetizer was pretty good as well! I'm looking forward to coming back here in the future to try more of their dishes! Also, shout out to the amazing servers who tended to our group. One of the female staff came over to our table to explain the menu and another male staff was constantly refilling water and asking how we were doing. We even met the chef! Great restaurant! More...

Had an absolutely amazing brunch the other day. I wanted to make a good impression on friends I was hosting from out of town so we popped in since we heard the brunch was good but man it exceeded our expectations. The eggs Benedict & crab cakes were out of this world. I pretty much melted when I tried the French Toast croissant it was so damn good. Everything was on point from the drinks to the friendly staff. So this was my first time here. I must say OMG. To start, the ambiance and the music makes the place feel cozy and comfy. The staff is very welcoming and helpful and best of all Kathy Fuchs is running the show. The bread that they put out is drizzle with olive oil and herbs and served with an olive and sundries tomato tapenade and I like neither. Well after tasting it, all I can think is, "Where the hell have these been all my life?!?!"   I ordered the Crispy Cod Fish and my wife had the Melbourne Salad with Grilled Chicken. The fish was so crispy and light at the same time and the homemade shoestring French fries were awesome. The salad was tremendous and so tasty.   In the words of Ahnold, I'll be back!Thank you Kathy for a great meal! More...

Came here for brunch at around 1pm and it was pretty crowded. We were seated within 2 minutes at a corner that seemed very secluded from the rest of the restaurant. Anyways, my friend and I have been wanting to try this place for months so our expectations were a bit higher than usual. I got the corn and jalapeno fritters benedict which tasted really good. It came with a side of home fries, a mini salad, and toast. All brunch options also come with one drink- my friend and I got bellinis. I'm giving this place 4 stars because the service was extremely slow. At one point we couldn't even find our server for like 15 minutes and then when he finally came out he didn't approach us all to check if we needed anything else. Service could definitely improve. I recommend the brunch here and would like to come back for lunch or dinner. More...

I've been meaning to write a review on Thirsty Koala for some time now. This is my overall favorite restaurant in Astoria, and quite possibly all of NYC. It's become by go-to spot for brunch, happy hour, and dinner. There is something for everyone here with great prices, ambiance, and exceptional service. This review is only for the vegan offerings at Thirsty Koala. I've been here a couple of times with omnivores, and they thoroughly enjoyed their meals.First- hats off to Thirsty Koala for having vegan menu items. Astoria as a whole is still lacking in vegan eateries, so I'm glad they're around. The quinoa/taro burger is inventive (taro as a binder, genius!) with a nice crunch, although not a huge fan of the BBQ sauce it's served with. This could be easily dressed up with another sauce, I think.Earth tacos - vegan chili in tortillas. You get 2 in an order, but as they double up on tortillas and then overload on fillings, you can make 4 tacos out of this meal. Flavor-wise, I'd say they're good, not great. My thinking is - if I want chili, I'll just order a side of chili, right? They just threw it on tortillas and called it a taco. Bread and olive tapenade served at the table - warm and deliciousService is super friendly and attentive.A solid 4 stars for this joint. More...

This was my first time trying Australian cuisine that wasn't just meat pies. Servers are friendly and one of the managers that I've seen there on two occasions is always very nice and you can tell she is passionate about the food and hospitality. The first time that I came here, there was only so much I can try with one other person, so I came back another time. Between these visits we ordered: Fried Calamari, Jalepeno Fritters, Kangaroo Burger, Kangaroo Steak, Lamb Lollies, and Roasted chicken. LOVED the calamari, kangaroo burger, and the lollies. The steak was good, very lean. The fritters and the chicken were OK. Overall, both visits were very satisfying and I will be coming back to try more on the menu. More...

This place does what it does very well. The food is generally light on the plate and deliciously seasoned (this is especially true of their rice). The only catch is that if you're looking for some kind of unique ethnic experience, you won't find it here. As with the country this restaurant represents (Australia), the food is a hodge podge of European and Asian dishes and influences. While they do them very well, there is nothing truly unique about them. If you keep that in mind, you will have a fantastic, laid back and delicious dining experience. More...

Happened upon the Thirst Koala because my niece has a significant amount of food allergies, but I do not.  This restaurant had an abundance of choices for her, and myself. In discussing her food allergies with the server (who was wonderful, sorry I didn't get her name) she was very understanding to the point that CHEF KATHERINE came to the table to inquire personally!!!!!!!  My niece was quite impressed, not only that her food restrictions were being taken seriously, Chef Katherine even tweaked her dessert, so that she was able to have a dessert. Also this place has outdoor seating, a great bar, And the nicest group of people that work here.Great place to have in Astoria.  I'll be returning with or without my niece. More...

I came here early on Saturday evening. Thankfully we went early enough that we grabbed a table without a reservation. This restaurant has many gluten free options which we found really accommodating. My boyfriend and I ordered the fried calamari to start. It was coated in gluten free flour and it came with these two delicious sauces. It was so good! You definitely cannot taste a difference in the flour. For my main course, I got the fish of the day. It was Australian sea bass in a wine cream sauce with capers and almonds. The almonds were a great touch. The fish was cooked perfectly. I chose rice and grilled vegetables as sides and both were great. My boyfriend had chicken Marsala. It was a chicken breast with portobello mushrooms. The chicken was not coated in flour like usual chicken Marsala. I wish we had ordered dessert, but we were very full. I would definitely return! The veggie burger is so good with quinoa, mushroom, aragula and more. It comes with crispy fries as well.

Kids enjoy their fried calamari, mashed potatoes and sliders, while I love the corn and jalapeño fritters! Hot and cheesy!

Tried the virgin Dingo, the perfect mixture of lemon, lime and cilantro!

The ambience is lively, service is fast and friendly, toilet is clean. Happy to go back!

This is hands down my favorite restaurant in Astoria. I used to go in about once a week because I love their food, and they have a great Happy Hour. Then about two months ago my son was diagnosed with celiac disease and had to go gluten free. Anyone who really understands this illness knows how difficult it is to eat out. Just because  something may be reported as gluten- free, it may not be prepared with the proper precautions against cross-contamination. Kathy, the chef and co-owner completely understands this and it is the only place I feel completely safe in ordering food from for my son.The food here is amazing. The gluten free food doesn't taste gluten free. Everything is so fresh and prepared so well. This weekend I had my son's communion party at The Thirsty Koala. I had a guest list that filled the restaurant. They went above and beyond anything I could have ever imagined. Every single thing they served- from salad to dessert was amazing. Every guest raved about the food. Friends who lived locally commented that they were planning on coming back. The staff was amazing and so accommodating. They worked so hard with what I can imagine wasn't an easy group to work with- everyone was walking around and mingling both at the bar and around tables. I don't know how they managed to get all orders in, correct and so quickly, without ever making us feel like we had to rush out. Christine, another co-owner is a sweetheart. She was on top of everything and is so down to earth. It really was a wonderful day. To end the event, my mom lost her balance and fell down. Kathy came running out of the kitchen and because of her previous work experience, sat with my mom for a good 15 minutes until she was absolutely sure that she was OK. I was blown away. I can't recommend this restaurant enough. Great good, amazing service, and just good people who have something for everyone. More...

Thirsty Koala is one of the best restaurants around in Queens. Their vegetarian taco and fritters were top notch. They also offer exceptional good services. One of my friends (first time here) felt adventurous and wanted to try the kangaroo burger. But unfortunately, he didn't enjoy it. I had the kangaroo burger previously, and thought it was delicious. I guess it's not everyone's cup of tea. A lady(the owner or manager?) came over and noticed the kangaroo burger only had a few bites on it and felt bad that my friend didn't enjoy his meal. She insisted on switching his meal to anything he wanted, even thought my friend was totally okay with it and the fault wasn't at the restaurant. This lovely lady didn't have to do any of this, but she went out of her way and made sure my friend felt like a valued patron. Excellent food and services. Keep it up and we'll be back soon!!! My boyfriend and I were craving fish and chips, so we decided to come to The Thirsty Koala on a Monday night for a date. We just moved to Astoria a month ago, so we're eagerly exploring the restaurant scene. It was a warm night, so we decided to sit outside. There were only a few people sitting inside, so we had the whole "patio" area to ourselves. Our waitress was very nice and provided us with great service! They have happy hour until 9pm, so we were able to get $5 cocktails and draft beer! The complimentary bread and olive/tomato spread was delicious. We both ordered the fish and chips, so we can only speak to that. Our food came out within 10 ish minutes after ordering! The dish comes with 3 healthy pieces of fish (cod I believe), fries, and 3 dipping sauces (tartar, ketchup, and a unique spicy and sweet sauce). The fish was fresh and super crispy on the outside and flaky/soft on the inside...perfect. This plate satisfied our craving! We decided to go all out so when the waitress offered the dessert menu we couldn't resist. We shared the truffles with vanilla ice cream, which to this day has been one of the most decadent desserts I've ever had. The truffles were warm, moist, and rich...almost like a super delicious brownie with a slight fudge quality to it-  definitely recommend it! We also shared the iced chai tea latte, which was very good, but not quite strong enough for my taste. Overall, The Thirsty Koala seems like a great place and we will be back again! More...

The thirsty koala is probably one of the best things that happened on the Ditmars side of Astoria. This is by far one of my best eateries to eat at in Astoria and there food is out of this world. They offer a great selection of beers that i love as well. I came in here yesterday on a eating binge and ordered the gluten free calamari for an appetizer that was delicious as usual. The portion they give you is huge for $13 dollars and you can't go wrong if you're a fan of calamari. For my man meal i order the kangaroo burger, yes you heard what i said kangaroo. It was amazing and cooked to perfection.  I love the Australian tap beer selection they offer which compliments the burger. The decor and ambiance in the inside of this place is very vibrant and warm, which i love as well. The staff is amazing and make sure everything is accordingly. I can't believe I haven't  written a review for this place yet. This restaurant has such a special place in my heart. This is where my husband and I chose to go on our first date and met for the first time, a little over two years ago. Definitely the right choice for a first date. Cute, casual and perfect for foodies. When we arrived, we were seated right away and for appetizers we decided to order the kangaroo sliders. To be honest, we didn't like the sliders. It has nothing to do with the restaurant! Our server even warned us that the meat might be too gamey and he was absolutely right. But it was a great ice breaker when you're on your first date. Our server was generous enough to take that off of our tab since we didn't enjoy it. For entrees, we ordered the lamb chops and steak tacos. The tacos were seasoned well and delicious. Reminded me a lot of authentic street tacos. My then date ordered the lamb chops and he loved them. He's a big lamb chops fan and he said it was seasoned and cooked well and the crunchy coating on the sides of the lamb chops added an interesting texture to the meat. We honestly love this place so much that we've kind of been trying to go there ever since our first date but it's always packed. And since our trips to Astoria are always spontaneous, we forget to make reservations. I can't wait to go back try some of the other dishes. Water glasses and coffee remained filled throughout our visit and servers were very friendly and professional. Came here twice but the first time wasn't bad but wasn't really good either so I never wrote a review but I went again recently and it changed my opinion. The service was great both times but I think it goes down to what kind of food ordered. The first time I think I got the kangaroo burger but it wasn't really special besides the fact that it's suppose to be exotic. The second time, I ordered the Ned Kelly Sandwich which was really good, which is a steak sandwich w/ onions, mushrooms, fries (because who doesn't like fries in their sandwiches), and feta cheese topped with their homemade sweet chili sauce. It's like their sweet chili sauce goes with everything, fries, meat pies, and calamari, which are some appetizers i'd recommend. They also have a good drink menu that's always changing. Like I said service is great, the owner comes around often and just wants everyone to have a good time. She'll explain the menu and the best way to tackle your food. PS the warm bread drizzled in olive oil with a tomato and olive spread is good. Feel free to ask for a refillPPS there is also happy hour available. I believe it's only $2 off drinks but it's better than nothing More...

Such a pleasant experience! I would recommend this restaurant hands down to everyone. The food was delicious but the customer service was excellent. It looked like we were served by the manager, she was wonderful, we were a party of 8 and it was around 10pm. She made us feel comfortable and educated us on the Australian menu. Loved it! More...

The Thirsty Koala is, hands down, my favorite restaurant in Astoria. I've eaten here periodically from when it first opened a few years back and I've continued coming ever since, especially for brunch. It's always had the perfect combination of everything a restaurant needs to succeed:Amazing owners; Christine is wonderfully friendly and visible throughout the day, working hard, putting together orders, and seeing how customers are doing. Cathy is brilliant at creating the menu and keeping it updated. I'm glad to have spoken to them both! I've never met Alex, though.Amazingly fresh, high quality ingredients and in-house made cheese; I'm down for the fact the ingredients are local, where possible. And you can find free-range and grass-fed meats mentioned throughout the menu. And yeah, they make their own goat cheese. And it's delicious.Killer staff; I've always had perfectly friendly and awesome experiences with everyone who works here. The menu never remains stagnant, which is refreshing. The prices have gone up over time, but I'm honestly shocked that it hadn't happened sooner, because all the items are very reasonably priced for the quality you're getting.I came here the other day for my 30th birthday because honestly, there was no where else I'd rather eat. I knew I'd enjoy my meal, and I was right. I ordered the Fish and Chips. It was delicious. The cod was tender as heck, with a perfect (and I mean perfect) fried batter. Nothing but crisp on the outside, nothing but tender Pacific cod inside. The tartar sauce was super unique, maybe made with Greek yogurt? It was creamy, it was cooling, and didn't have the sharp bite of typical tartar. I've never had anything like it and definitely used every drop. There was a sweet chili sauce on the side as well - that stuff was delicious on everything. The fries were soggy, but well seasoned, and I still enjoyed them. For brunch, my go to is always the Corn & Jalapeno Fritters Benedict (with smoked salmon, but that's up to you). I don't tolerate spice very well, but this dish is still awesome. Three fritters, each topped with a poached egg and your choice of meat. "Avo salsa" is pretty much a loaded guac, packed with flavor. Oh and the potatoes? PERFECTLY cooked. Each time, every time. If there was cardboard seasoned and cooked the same way, I'd eat it and it'd still be delicious. This dish is pretty huge and guaranteed to fill you up.The Pain Perdu? Yes, it's as delicious as it sounds. Just get it. I like splitting an order of this with a friend who's getting the steak sandwich. Order it cooked medium and you get tender strips of steak topped with feta cheese and magic. Between deliciously toasted bread. There aren't enough good things to be said about everything I've eaten here. I'm one of the few locals who's actually born and raised in Astoria, and I've seen tons of eateries come and go, but this one is here to stay and I couldn't be happier.PS. Happy hour from 4-7pm. I'm down for the $5 wine. Literally every single wine on the menu is $5/glass... I can hear you putting on your shoes to go there now. Start running. More...

Usually when you go to a restaurant as a vegan there's maybe one or two vegetarian options that you can ask  to have the cheese removed. They usually consist of bland options, mostly salads, just put on the menu to satisfy your 'difficult' friend. Thankfully that's not the case at all at The Thirsty Koala. We loved this adorable restaurant and the many options to choose from. It was easily one of the best meals I've ever had. We had the veggie tacos which which were filling and were just the right amount of spicy. I also had the vegan Mousakka. My husband loved the Quinoa burger which didnt fall apart as most quinoa burgers we have tried have. The vegan options are not some afterthought here. Meat lovers would love them too. There's also a really interesting cocktail menu. The Thirsty Koala is well worth a trip to Astoria. More...

I've eaten at TK many times over the years since they've opened and to me they've only gotten better. This is a great place to take anyone because they have such a range of different food options - meaty, vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, plus such a range of different types of food for whatever you're in the mood for. I especially love the haggles and special pastas/flatbreads! I'm a vegetarian and they are also great about accommodating food allergies/preferences and always alert you if something is non veg (like their fish sauce they serve with the fries). Both brunch (includes a free drink!) and dinner are both excellent, as well as their cocktails, and I've never had a bad meal there. Plus, everything is fairly priced and you can eat here without over spending. We've had their delivery as well and it's on point. More...

I had lived in astoria for so long. I never thought to try koala! What a mistake! I had the crispy calamari & the beef burger. It was scrumptious. Never judge a book by its name! Stop in and try the under rated local astoria gem. One of many. More...

I love this place. Like, LOVE. Everything from the welcoming Aussie lady to the koalas in the front of the restaurant, to the sometimes-loud bar area is very Aussie. And the food? Even better.I love the fact that this place actually serves Aussie-style dishes: sausage rolls, meat pies, burgers with egg and pineapple!, and thick chips. Oh, and the desserts: lamingtons and pavlova. Yum! More...

This is me and my partners fave restaurant in Astoria! Their fried calamari is better than Balmoral beach's! And that's saying somethin! The service and atmosphere is classy and we often come for brunch and dinner. Word of warning: the portions are very generous, so leave some room for desert! The triple T: Tim-Tan-tiramisu is one of a kind! More...

It was my first time coming here and I really enjoyed it. We were greeted at the door and sat right away after talking about a food allergy they assured us it wouldn't be a problem. The service was great as was the food. I had the vegan tacos and my boyfriend had the steak and eggs. Both meals were really enjoyable. Highly recommend! More...

I celebrated my birthday brunch here with about 10 of my family members. Making a reservation was way too easy less than a week prior to the date. They set up a nice section towards the back of the restaurant. Everything was incredible. Our waitress was awesome, she was so nice and very attentive. Food was delicious.Thank you for a wonderful birthday brunch! I will be back! More...

We showed up as a party of three for brunch at 11am on a Sunday and we were seated right away! The place got super busy at about 11:30, but if you get there right at opening you should be seated with no issues. Brunch on Sunday includes a menu item and either a mimosa or coffee - if you order both, they absolutely will charge you for the coffee! The mimosa was good, not too strong and the coffee is Illy so it's worth the $4 if you're already sitting down and enjoying breakfast. I ordered the Fresca omelette, which was absolutely amazing. The portion was huge and I only got about halfway through, but it was a nice change to get an immense amount of food for a reasonable price. The location was super clean and the service was great - our waters were never empty and the food came out quickly! We look forward to brunching here whenever we're in Queens! More...

I mainly go to this place for happy hour, which is really good for Astoria - it goes until 9 during the week, and until 8 on the weekends as far as I know. I always get the strawberry and basil cocktail, I forget the name, but it's strong, delicious and very good value. I've only tried their food once, at brunch. I wasn't wild about it, to be honest - I had a roast veggie sandwich and it didn't have a lot of flavor. However, because their happy hour is so great, and some of the servers are so friendly, I'll give the food another try at some point. Also, in the summer, they have great outdoor seating on the sidewalk. Great for soaking up the general Ditmars atmosphere. More...
