Invited for lunch/dinner by a friend to celebrate her birthday. I must say we don't normally leave reviews but my wife and I found the quality of the food absolutely outstanding! The landlord is a font of knowledge about the history of the place. Well worth a visit. More...

Stopped by for a drink and meal, fantastic meal but could do with one or two items like sandwiches. A great atmosphere and clearly popular so booking a table for food is advised can’t wait to go back

Wonderful historic pub/ hotel with choice of four poster bedrooms. Charles Dickens wrote most of Pickwick Papers there and Lord Nelson and Charles Kingsley both visited. See the 5000 year old standing stone incorporated into the property and a Roman copy of the original stone in the dining room -which was once the monks' kitchen when the building began life as a monastery in the 13th century. Had a great evening meal here on Monday evening Couldn't be faulted Friendly atmosphere Only criticism was that there was very little for vegetarians and nothing for vegans on the menu which did make it difficult for my friend who has to follow a strict diet for health reasons Will be returning though perhaps with a prior phone call to the chef!

Absolutely beautiful, the food was Devine, the sirloin of beef was delicious and the white chocolate pannacotta with strawberries and chocolate soil was heaven sent . The setting is delightful, so full of history in the 1800's Charles dickens stayed and wrote The Pickwick Papers!!.. you really have to visit to experience the quaint beauty of this 12th century establishment. The place was absolutely immaculate and the staff were charming, nothing was to much trouble. We will definitely be returning many times again , highly recommended. More...
