Fabulous afternoon tea here and the hotel is so beautiful

Nice hotel, plenty of parking, decent sized room, large bathroom with bath and large shower. ||The highs: room size, nice bed, clean sheets, friendly staff, little welsh cakes with your cuppa tea on first night only. |The lows: poor mobile phone and WiFi signal so if you’re on a business trip you need to find a better signal. TV did not work pixelating all the time and no remote controls. |Needed a deep clean, light shades needed a clean, wall in bathroom above radiator was full of dust and cob webs in bedroom. More...

The Great House is a treat of a foodie destinatio! With relaxing furnishings, inviting, attentive staff and a brilliantly conceived menu make this place a little slice of heaven. They’ve created an elegant restaurant that has won armloads of awards since it opened. A hotel and restaurant you can find stylish and supremely comfy cottages and bedrooms. ||||The Great House Food is clearly inspired by local produce; The wine list is small, selective and good value. I loved every minute of my two-night stay here. We picked the place because we were visiting the area and the hotel looked historic and interesting. The rooms are lovely and have a real boutique feel, and the staff are so friendly and welcoming. We didn't originally plan to eat at the restaurant but a couple of locals recommended it and I'm glad we did because we ended up being so impressed. The food is really special - amazing presentation and unusual ingredients. Proper fine dining. I never thought I'd say this because as a vegetarian mushroom risotto is often the only option, but theirs was divine. We'll be back for sure next time we're in the area. More...

My Mum and I stayed last night for one night. We booked the room through booking.com about a week ago. We were down visiting a family member in hospital so just needed somewhere decent to get some food and lay our head for the night. We could tell when booking the hotel on the site that the hotel was recently refurbished. ||On arrival (we were able to park in the hotel car park) we were greeted by Marcel who was friendly and welcoming and offered to carry our luggage and show us to the room. He took us to a corridor and apologised that there was some building materials leaning up against the wall along the landing as he explained the rooms were in the process of being refurbished. ||On opening the room, we were immediately struck by the fact that the room was one that had yet to be refurbished. Marcel left us alone and on inspecting the room it was clean, as was the bathroom but we were very disappointed as it was not what we were expecting. We also noticed upon entering how cold the room was and on closer expectation, I noticed that there was about half an inch gap at both the top and bottom of the windows where it did not meet the edges. I totally respect that it’s an old building but with the weather having recently turned and with it due to rain in the night (as it turned out it was a filthy night and rained constantly throughout) I was worried about us getting ill by being so cold at night especially my elderly mother.||I went down to speak to Marcel about my disappointment and he was brilliant and explained they have a sister hotel up the road that has been refurbished and he would move us there with no additional charge. I went back up to the room to explain to my mum to gather our things when he knocked on the room and explained that we could in fact stay in a newly refurbished room on site without moving. This room was two rooms down from the original room...what a difference! ||He said the room was not quite finished (they were still waiting to install a phone) however it was essentially ready for use with the bed made, towels ready etc. I’m pleased to say that the room and bathroom was amazing...comfy bed, great shower. Once the whole hotel has been refurbished it will be amazing and I love the direction it’s going in.||We had a table booked for dinner and the restaurant was about half full when we sat (we had a drink in the bar beforehand). They have a good selection of drinks on offer and the wine list was good. The food was also really good with a decent enough choice and all cooked from fresh by the chef. Marcel continued to serve us in the restaurant alongside Charlotte and both were very attentive whilst obviously busy looking after other guests. ||When we decided to head for bed, Marcel caught us on the stairs and said he wanted to offer us breakfast free of charge and advised us of the timing in the morning. This was a really nice surprise and not something we were expecting given he has resolved my complaint about the room quickly and efficiently. ||There was a good choice of different breakfast meals alongside juices, fresh fruit salad and cereals etc so it is definitely worth paying for. ||On checking out, Charlotte was there to see us out and once again was attentive and wished us a good day.||I would absolutely stay here again as the staff were warm, professional and dealt so well with our initial disappoint. Next time|I will phone up to ensure we’re in a room that has been updated. I understand hotels cannot close whilst refurbs take place but my review would have been very different if we’d had to stay in the first room we were given!!! More...

We had the most lovely lunch here today. We had no preconceptions and simply pulled into their spacious carpark on a whim. How serendipitous was that? We had a lovely warm welcome and were ushered into an amazing dining room - think Norman keep meets Tate modern, with unmatching chairs - but guess what? It all melded beautifully. ||||The menu looked great and first came the freshly baked ciabatta with both salted butter and an irresistible marmite butter: wow. We skipped the delicious-sounding starters and went straight to the mains. My wife had a mighty and mighty delicious beer battered fish and scrumptious thrice-cooked chips with mushy peas and the most delicate but punchy tartar sauce. The waiter told us that he hadn't liked tartar sauce until he'd tasted the unique delicacy of this chef's concoction and that made total sense to us. I had the most divine pork belly loin - a perfect oblong of luscious pork, with a superb but delicate layer of crackling, perfect jus, al dente broccoli spears and a matching oblong of potato, crisp on the outside anf fluffily creamy inside.||||Whether you're a starving pilgrim or a fully-paid up gastronome, do not miss this adorable but un-stuffy little gem of a wayside inn. It's totally recommended. When we visited the Great House in Laleston, we were on holiday in a "posh" 4/5* hotel and the lunch we savoured at this establishment put our hotel to shame, when it came to culinary gorgeousness.||||Dr. Nigel H Williams More...

I've been here a couple of times, the food has always been really good. I have been when the famous chef was there and after he left, and I must say, we had better food and a better experience when he was there. Recently we had a few problems with the food. I ordered some scallops without the chilli jam as I cannot handle spice and my girlfriend told them she was vegan and they said no problem.Fast forward, they served me the chilli jam and served my girlfriend food drizzled with mayonnaise. So we were not very happy about that. We had to fight for some sort of compensation too. My girlfriend was throwing up in the toilets and they grudgingly say, fine, we'll give you £10 off? Not very professional. The main course was still good though. I've had several great nights there pre 2019, however, after my latest experience I'm not sure I'd go again. More...

Chose this hotel as it was handy for our visit to Bridgend. Initially the food was superb, the room was olde world and cosy. My only negative points are the room was dusty and carpet had marks and stains. We booked for 3 Nights. Complimentary toiletries and drinks weren’t replenished. As, l said food was superb for two days, it seems that there were to many people in restaurant for the amount of staff on, during our last night. My meal was awful, 40minutes between starter and main. The food was obviously under lamp for far to long. Real shame as this is a gem, we will visit again as overall property is very good. More...
