Ted and team are hugely fantastic! I had never taken a dog to training before and with his 90 minute Reactive dog class, I learned so much! It was hugely valuable to me and my pup. My dog understands what I want her to do, I’ve been able to break her of barking at the neighbors dog thru a fence, she walks on a leash like a dream, and we both so much happier for it. I’d give Ted and Team 20 stars if I could. More...

Our pup had taken a previous training course elsewhere with adequate result. But we wanted her to be well mannered and also controlled for her own safety. We enrolled in first the Reactive Dog course and then the Canine Obedience with wonderful results. The instruction, guidance, and information you receive in either of these classes is invaluable. Our learning how to communicate effectively with our girl is really key to her success. While she was learning new words and commands we were getting important lessons on what we were doing well and not so well in helping her know what we wanted. She did well in that class, so my boyfriend and I signed her up for the obedience class, along with our other dog, a border collie. The class was super helpful for us with how to correct unwanted behaviors (which our Aussie's Petco course did not) and how to learn other important commands such as stand-stay. The book is full of info, but the course brings that info into life and so you get to practice it with experts (many times there were 4 trainers at our classes walking around helping). Definitely recommend their classes. Sometimes classes start a little late and run past allotted time, but that is probably the only thing I can say that is critical. My dog and I failed Ted Terroux's class despite his staff's best efforts. So, why the 5-star rating?A very quick background: Ted's class came highly recommended from a friend with dogs that she's needed training help with, and as our dog is still a puppy (just over a year) and showed some behaviors that led us to believe she'd be of the independent sort, and we've never owned a dog before, we decided to enroll for his beginning obedience class. Ted's approach is based on positive reinforcement with correction (not negative reinforcement) applied only as needed- get your dog to do what you want by making it worth their while and cementing your bond with them. It's more lecture-oriented at the start, but that's to introduce you to concepts to help you care for your dog, but very quickly you're working with your dog the whole class time. The program is 7 weeks long, and at the end, Ted and his trainers test you and your dog on whether you can pass each of the areas they've set out; heel, stand stay, sit stay, down stay, come, and trick. Our pup passed every one of the tests except for down stay, and she came close. Ted was nice, but clear; we nearly got it, but we didn't. Was I upset with this? Well, a little chagrined, because feeling like you failed at something is never fun, but it was a major improvement over the start of the class, where puppy would barely sit unless she felt like it, and neighborhood walks were a succession of pulls and yanks in every direction. To watch your dog stand without moving, as a trainer touches her, and 17 other dogs and their owners walk around is fantastic. We were pleased with this, but what next happened cemented our opinion of Ted's professionalism and customer service. According to him, usually only 2-3 dogs in each class failed, but in our class, fully half did. I think this bothered him, because he later sent a lengthy email examining his view of the causes, and offering opportunities for each person/dog to retake two of the later classes for an additional chance to learn the skills and pass the test. The standards for each dog and owner to pass are entirely Ted's. It would have been easy for him and his trainers to say, well, let's keep to our average of only 2-3 dogs not passing to make us look good, and anyone close got passed.  Having all those people come back for additional work, for free, costs money when he could just have easily said come back for a, say, 'slightly reduced' class fee. Instead he kept to his standards and his desire for us all to learn, and I commend him and his school to Yelpers looking for a trainer who backs up his commitment to high standards and customer service.Training your dog takes work, and we'll use the skills we learned from Ted to keep working with our dog. Recognize that you might not see results right away, but you will see them if you keep at it. Ted and his trainers can give you the tools to succeed with your dog. More...

If you're reading this review instead of just looking at the stars then you want some details. So here's the specifics on the basic obedience class: NO shock collars, behind-the-shed-beatings (even though he understands when/why you might want to) and VERY little "expressing dominance". Ted and his assistants teach you how to teach your own dog based on decades of experience on what usually works, then watch you do it, helping you tweek it specific to your dog until your dog gets it FROM YOU. If you have a puppy and aren't quite sure what to do, this is the class for you. If you have a SHELTER DOG FROM HELL and you are on the verge of taking it back to the shelter, THIS CLASS IS FOR YOU. I've always had dogs and my wonderful wife only had one in the house when she was young. I thought this class was really just for her but after completing the course I was honestly surprised how much I learned. The single best part of this course is the lifetime guarantee. If you forget what you're doing, your dog develops new behavior problems, or even if you both relapse they will set you back on track for free. Once you take the course it becomes obvious why Ted Terroux is constantly featured in all the "Best of Denver"s and even had his own show on Animal Planet. Q&As

I was very successful in various levels of dog obedience competition, show and field for 22 years, but I found much greater satisfaction using those skills to help people with their own dogs. Knowing that we are improving the lives of dogs and their people has been the most rewarding aspect of what we do.

This is a family business that was started here in Colorado in 1958, but had it roots in Chicago in the mid 1940's.

Experience and knowledge! No training organization in Colorado has been training dogs as long as we have and no independent training organization in Colorado has trained as many dogs as we have. We have a huge tool box that we can use to help dog owners to help their dogs become the best dogs that they can be. Our practice isn't built on one theory or principle. While positive reinforcement should always be the primary motivator in training and behavior modification, some dogs need more structure than "positive reinforcement only" doctrine will allow. We help everyone achieve the right balance for themselves and each individual dog without building treat dependency or painful correction methods.
