The Tap and Spile is an old pub located just off broad street in Birmingham and backs into the canal. If you book in advance you can ask for a table with a view of the water. looking for somewhere for a quiet pre dinner drink, my wife and i just kinda wandered in. The guy behind the bar was a little 'loco', in a good way but very friendly and welcoming. with just one other couple in there, we smiled at each other remarking how some places must struggle to survive. Spotting Old Peculiar on draft i persuade (not difficult) wifey to stay for another drink. Glad we did. $.30 and the place started filling up. NIce people too! The food is lovely and is freshly cooked. I had the lamb chops and they were cooked beautifully and very meaty, my husband had the steak and ale pie which had proper pastry on top not one of those puff pastry things. We shared a pudding - apple crumble- and it was one of the nicest ones I've had. Definitely worth another visit especially if you use Groupon vouchers as we saved about £35 on the total cost. I enjoyed a lunch here with a friend from work. It was a special deal from Groupon so included a glass of wine and a main meal plus a side to share. We both chose the gammon served with an egg and chips and the side was enormous onion rings in a beautiful crisp batter. The gammon was a bit too salty for my taste and my friend's was rather tough, probably needed a steak knife! The onion rings were exceptional though! If entering from the pub at street level, you need to go downstairs to get to the restaurant area. The place is small with limited seating but thankfully we managed to get a table for 5 for lunch on a Saturday. The starters (quesadillas and calamari) and mains we ordered (even from the kid's menu) were all really good. And staff was super friendly and helpful. Went here for a date night whilst visiting Brum, lovely setting beside the canal. Amazing service throughout, very welcoming and friendly staff. Starters arrived promptly, absolutely delicious. The mushroom bruschetta was to die for!! Ordered a steak each, with sauces and sides. Wow, you can tell it's all homemade and fresh! had an absolute awesome steak here at the weekend. recommended to me by a great friend. perfect location to go symphony hall. The food was outstanding! I had the 16oz rump that was on the menu as ideal for sharing! sizeable dish and cooked to perfection. The pub was a wonderful find . Traveled to Edgbaston for the Ashes and after walking into some chains and soulless bars, we fell upon this gem. The staff made us feel so welcome that we returned the following night. Sadly we ruined everyones night by singing on the karaoke. More...
