Matt, Ty and Will have been amazing to work with! We had a backyard that basically had grass, weeds, two concrete paths and two sump pits. It felt small and simply dysfunctional. We had a vision for a Japanese inspired garden with a deck and vegetable planters and couldn't imagine how everything could fit together. On our first meeting with Matt, he listened to our hopes and helped us imagine the space. Immediately we felt that he was very knowledgeable and were very comfortable to go ahead with design. The design also worked out very well, it was very detailed, gave us sample materials to choose from and most importantly reasonable time to think through. We were most impressed that they did all the installs themselves, didn't subcontract, was super tidy (the backyard was clean every evening when we came back, it was amazing), and kept in close communication with us. During install, they double checked drainage and concluded that there was a drainage problem with our yard which would affect the longevity of plants originally chosen, but they were quick to discuss options with us and the result ended up (we think) simply amazing. All in all, they took all our ideas, showed us how it can become a reality, gave us guidance, helped us implement our vision, and did all that on time and on budget. Now there's no more concrete paths, the hideous sump pits are hidden under the deck with removable openings for those rare times of access, veggie gardens are going great, and a low maintenance Japanese inspired garden with a custom bamboo water feature. We are spending every day out there all thanks to Take Root Gardens' great work. They were great to work with and we would definitely hire them again even if we were to go back in time. Matt and Ty did a great job on upgrading my backyard from design concept to installation. They worked within my budget and took time to really understand the look that I was going for. Both are absolute professionals: friendly, knowledgeable, prompt response time, good attention to details and very organized. They are passionate about what they do and take pride in their work and it definitely shows.

The work was finished on time, on budget and exactly as I had envisioned. So much so that all my surrounding neightbours came to me to tell me how good of a job they did and how amazing the garden now looks. I would highly recommend them! More...

In the final stages of construction of a small house in our Vancouver backyard, feeling exhausted and drained, we hired Take Root Gardens to execute and install the landscaping. They took what was a construction site, and in an amazingly short period of time, turned it into a lovely functional space that has me longing for spring. Some of the best parts of working with Take Root, beyond what is their obvious expertise and exacting standards for themselves, was the collegiality of working with them. When they spotted something that they thought might cause a problem, they called us in right away and pointed it out. We would discuss, they'd offer various solutions, we'd choose our preferred solution, and on they'd go to accomplish it. At any time that there were additions we were requesting (e.g. one space had to be changed due to the gas and wiring services running underneath - a fence couldn't be installed there) they found creative ways around it that turned out even better, and if there were any extra costs they'd quickly give us a verbal approximation, and follow up with a written quote to sign off on.
All this was done while it may be raining, or cold and sunny, but they turned up every day to get the job done quickly, and had the most amazing good humour while doing it, regardless of the weather.
In short, the job they did is beautiful. Working with them was a dream. I cannot recommend them any more highly. Matt, Ty, Will, thank you! Job incredibly well done. We look forward to spring when the final planting can be completed and we can see how truly beautiful you've made our yard. More...

I honestly can't recommend the Take Root Gardens team highly enough. It is such a refreshing change to work with contractors who take pride in their work, are totally trustworthy and have the integrity to stand by their work. Take Root worked with us to come up with an excellent layout design for our back yard including planting plans so we can enjoy time out there as a family. They also did an excellent job implementing the design which included extensive hardscaping, addressing drainage issues, and raised bed planter boxes. We couldn't be happier and can't wait until the spring so we can spend more time out there. We are so happy with the back yard that Take Root designed and built for us. It was a pleasure to work with Matt and Ty and you can tell they take pride in their work. It is so refreshing to work with contractors you can trust to do a professional job with the same care and attention to key details of the job that you would. We found Matt and Ty of Take Root Gardens through the Houzz app and contacted them based on the aesthetic of past work they posted.

From the first phone call with Matt, we were impressed. He has a great combination of professionalism and enthusiasm. We could tell that he loved his work and was extremely knowledgeable.

We contracted them to do the design plan for our front landscape, driveway and hardscape. Matt really listened during our initial consultation and took into account our ideas about we liked and hoped to achieve. The final plan they presented is amazing! Better than we could have imagined. Not only does the plan look great but they created a consistent appearance of plants based on colour and texture over the two very different micro-climates in our front area. The Take Root team did a fantastic job in renovating and rejuvenating our townhouse garden space. Within three days they had replaced our tired and trampled side garden with a beautiful stepping stone pathway laid in gravel and edged in wallstone, created a drystack retaining wall and gravel pathway in the front, and laid down two small patio areas in the back. Although ours might be considered a small scale project compared to some, the improvements to our outdoor living space are significant, in both functionality and aesthetics.
Along with the team's quality of work, skill and efficiency, I was very much impressed with their professional approach to the project, from the initial design stages to completion. We recently had Take Root Gardens transform our backyard. They have done an amazing job with a small, sloping, neglected space and we still can't quite believe the transformation. We were impressed with this company for many reasons. They were able to work with us to come up with a vision that was realistic and reasonable for our budget. They were detail-oriented and had reasons for everything that was chosen for the garden. Once the work started on-site, the team showed up on time and were professional and easy to communicate with. Matt and Ty did an outstanding job of transforming my backyard. They created a space that was far beyond what I could have imagined. I was so pleased with the attention to detail in the design of the garden, as well as the construction of the hardscape. The project moved along very swiftly. Everyday huge changes were made, and every night the area was cleaned up and left completely tidy. Communication was excellent.I was kept well informed of the daily progress as well the to the schedule of the remaining work. Matt and Ty did an amazing job to our small front and back garden. It was a small job for them, but they still gave it as much attention as one of their larger budget projects.

Matt and Ty were always very professional. If they said they will start at 8am, they were there at 8am if not a bit earlier. Everyday I would come back from work and see a substantial amount of progress. They never over promised, but rather they delivered on what they said they would.

It was a pleasure working with Take Root Gardens to transform a weed and junk filled area into our garden! Matt and Ty patiently listened to our ideas and wishes, took our simple sketches and with their valuable insight, collaboratively transferred all of this information into concrete design plans.
From the plans, Take Root Gardens then implemented the project. No detail was too small for their thoughtful consideration. Matt and Ty always were willing to patiently and thoroughly discuss any unexpected issues that arose. They are perfectionists and this is appreciated.
Clear communication is a cornerstone of Take Root Gardens. Matt and Ty arrived when expected, worked extremely hard and were diligent to make sure that the project was left tidy at the end of the day. Matt and Ty designed and installed landscaping for our new duplex house. Despite a small 33' by 122' lot, they designed our landscaping in a way that it look and feel spacious. Matt and Ty were creative beyond our wildest dreams. We hired them based on reviews here at Houzz and the fact that out of four companies, when they said they would have our initial estimate ready, they were the only ones that came through as promised. We were right that this would be an indication of how the project would go.
They started with a mud hole for a backyard, as the destructive beetles plaguing Vancouver had done their work.
My husband had said, "you did a fine job with the inside of the house, do whatever you want outside". Ha! The "whatever" man had 1001 opinions. We were like a divorce reality show when poor Matt and Ty turned up with their wonderful plans. They were patient and understanding when we required two meetings to finalize the project.
The final product is so much more than we had ever expected. Low maintenance was our theme, but we got a beautiful, unique look that we never could have imagined. They were on schedule and on budget. We hired Take Root Gardens for two jobs over the summer, and were really happy with both. Matt and Ty did a wonderful job designing and installing a patio and pathway that gave us a great eating and lounging area, while still keeping lots of lawn and garden in our small Vancouver lot.

They were always on time, and kept on budget. They went above and beyond when they encountered a bumble bee hive in our garden. Instead of killing the hive, they left part of the project un-done, and returned once the hive was dormant, at no additional cost to us, to complete the project, and safely relocated the hive.

I would highly recommended them to anyone who wants any work done in their gardens, and will definitely use them again for any future projects. More...

We hired Take Root Gardens to transform our tired yard into a private oasis. This included a new and expanded patio, new lawn, refreshed beds, new cedar gates and a pergola - amongst many other things.

It was great to work with Matt and Ty as well as their sub-trades. They provided us with some excellent design options, stuck to their budget and work schedule and were fantastic to work with.

It was a grueling project over three weeks in some awful "spring monsoon" working conditions, but Take Root always responded to our questions in a positive and respectful manner. They started early and always worked late into the day...and weren't flipping around from project to project. Both Matt and Ty were also very responsive to our various email queries or planning ideas.

I hired Take Root Gardens in March of 2014 for a total overhaul of our modest Vancouver backyard. Not only was the execution flawless, they added a lot of value in the design and planning stage, with some great suggestions that worked out really well.

During the actual work, they were always right on time, took very good care of our property during the work, and cleaned up spotlessly, even going so far as to powerwash our deck, which was not part of the project.

What stood out the most, was how much care they took, and how detail oriented they were.

The overall quote was very reasonable, and they came in right on budget and on time.
