Came to Sushi by Bou because of a yelp perk (buy one $50 gift card get one free). Once you hit the neon light entrance, you have to go up the colorful stairs to the top and then take a right into a small room. We were seated immediately even though we arrived early. Chef Casey made our sushi and he was very friendly. We did the regular omakase ($50 per person for 12 pieces, 30 minutes). Apparently the menu doesn't change (unless you have allergies). There is also a 60 minute "bougie" package for $100 pp for 17 pieces. Apparently the 5 additional pieces in the bougie package are expensive fish imported from Japan. Each piece that came out was delicious and the additions (charcoal salt, wasabi yuzu, etc) complimented very well with the fish. Overall, I think it's a great experience for a first time omakase and a nice quick meal. Good atmosphere. Will come back- debating if I should try the flatiron location again or another! More...

This is as good as sushi gets. The intimacy of being seated in direct view of the chefs preparing the sushi made me appreciate the experience even more. The fish itself, in my opinion, was the best I have ever had. I particularly loved the tuna selections, and thought each round was better than the previous. The fatty tuna was my favorite and just melted in my mouth. The salmon and eel were also mouthgasms. The chefs were also very gracious about my partner's shellfish allergy, and I was grateful that it went so smoothly. I do feel like this is a special occasion kind of place, but others there mentioned how they have done the omakase several times. I was glad the servers were familiar with the Yelp gift cards and it was not awkward bringing it up at the end of the meal. This place is run very professionally, and it was a very memorable experience. Highly recommend! More...

To elevate the experience further, the kind staff there welcome you in, making it feel like you are entering David Bou's personal sushi lounge.. making you an intimate guest rather than any old diner. I took my friend for 30 minutes Omakase $50/12 pieces. The vibe giving out from Sushi by Bou is trendy and casual as they want to be call 'Secret Omakase' - the entrance is on the side of the church, has to go down to the basement first then go up to a second floor. I couldn't find the entrance at the beginning so when you first come to this location you might have to add an extra time to find the way in. - the experience with the host is not really impressed, he couldn't find my name on a reservation list and I have to find it for him. The greeting is seem to be rushed. There were miss communication and missing information from texting that they said if i have any concerns I must use text to communicate with them before the day of the reservation. During eating he walked around and staring us too long. It was unpleasant feeling and we feel he just wanted us to finish meal and leave. After we finish and paid we about to leave but he came to us and said he has another waiting and he needs a space! From what I keep tracking time it was not 30 minutes yet from the time we came. We finish earlier and he just wanted to kick us out? The host is only dark spot on this wonderful Omakase experience at Sushi by bou.- fish is great as reputations, sushi chefs are nice, professional and friendly. After getting that YES! Perk eg. Sushi by Bou gift card, was super excited to have gotten to try Sushi by Bou with the hubs today! Good: price cannot be beat at $50pp omakase for 12 pieces, 30 min, fresh seafood with the GOOD stuff including chu-toro, o-toro, uni, tiger prawn. Great classic combos of pieces of sushi - garnished with truffle salt, wasabi pico, pickled radish. The seaweed was also always toasted and extra crunchy- a plus! Our chef, Palm, was engaging and fun- educating us about each piece and its origins as well as giving us some on-key drink recommendations (Yuzu Honey Bee which was not too sweet, citrusy and had a little spice from pink peppercorns). The ... less good?: I may have eaten the chewiest wagyu at an omakase place in my life! And okay, okay, call me spoiled but was hoping for a little shave of truffle, like at Sushi by Jones, and maybe more unique flavors? All in all worthwhile experience, especially for the price! Well, it took almost the entire year, but I found the best meal of 2019.Sushi by Bou has expanded a lot since they first opened, so omakase is more accessible than ever! And at $50 a head, it's incredibly affordable too (even more so when you do a BOGO offer thru Yelp). We decided to go to the Flatiron location because it looked the coolest from the photos and reviews. Not sure how much of a "speakeasy" it is, when there's a big neon sign in front of the basement door, and the unmarked "red door" that leads to the dining area is usually wide open. But it's the thought that counts. The space is tiny. There's a bar in the corner and some benches to sit at while you wait for the previous group to finish up. We got talking to the bartender, ordered some cocktails, and he came back with some glasses of whiskey he heard us talking about! Great guy! When we sat down, our main man behind the counter was Art. Hilarious guy with a ton of rehearsed jokes (still funny though). He took the time to explain things to us, let us torch our own albacore, and was overall incredibly gracious. Palm, the guy to his right, also jumped in here and there, but he was more attending to another group. It's a small sushi counter, so you really get the undivided attention of the chefs. Our menu that night was:Hamachi (yellotwail), Akami (lean tuna), Chu-toro (medium fatty tuna), Botan ebi (spotted prawn), Ikura (salmon roe), Bincho (Albacore), Hotate (scallop), Uni (sea urchin), O-toro (fatty tuna), Sake (salmon), Wagyuni (surf and turf), and finally, Unagi (BBQ eel).My favorite was surprisingly the sake (salmon). So much so that when they asked if we wanted anything else, that's what I ordered (you get double portions for a la carte). The Wagyuni was a very close second (uni on top of wagyu). Delicious, creamy, decadent. Other favorites were the Ikura and the O-toro. I really liked how they spaced things out and also sequenced things so there was a lot of variety. The cocktails were good as well. At $17 a pop, not the cheapest, but worth it. My favorite was the Roku Martini made with gin and sake (yes, it's very boozy). All in all, a very pleasant dining experience. Would definitely recommend going to Sushi by Bou, but specifically this location for the ambiance and the convenient location!Review #3600! More...

Short: excellent + casual omakase restaurant known for expedient meals (30m for 2 people; 60m for 4 people). Tips: make online reservation; check for promotions (they often have BOGO or gift card deals); eat each piece of sushi in one bite; the hand towelette is for cleaning fingers between each piece.Had no trouble making a weeknight dinner reservation at this location. The restaurant seats about 10 people, so they have short, timed seatings. The seating before us ran a little over, so we ordered drinks while waiting. Drinks were excellent, running the standard ~$12-15 NYC pricing. The restaurant vibe was underground/casual, which I LOVED because sometimes I just want casual omakase - some good eats without the upscale fuss, honestly. The actual dining experience itself was incredible. The chefs are very attentive, entertaining, and great at their jobs. Each piece of fish was soo fresh and flavourful, literally melted in my mouth but still with distinct bite/texture. I subtracted a star because I generally prefer zero-to-very-little seasoning, and this sushi was very seasoned (my husband loved it though, so, shrug, preference). The 12-piece meal was satisfying and we left happy and full. Will definitely be back to try their other locations! More...

I can't describe how eating here changed my life. I heard of Bou from a friend, but it took me 3 months after moving to New York to finally come in for a Bougie 60 sitting at Bou. First of all: sushi quality was amazing, blowing away most of the omakase I've had in the city by leaps and bounds, and at a fraction of the price. Each piece became my new favorite piece, but the Tuna with wasabi, scallop, and fatty tuna WERE SO GOOD I CRY (and frequently look back at my photos to relive the moment)Second --and most importantly-- was the atmosphere. I had been feeling pretty glum since moving here, but my chef Kin and server Kevin completely turned my attitude upside down. From joking with me across the counter, to cheers-ing countless cups of sake, to even letting me control the music, I felt at home and welcomed far more than just a customer. Since weekday nights are pretty free, it's also a great place to drop in or make a res even the day of. Always greeted enthusiastically by the chefs and handed a cup of freshly poured sake by Kevin, I can say in the middle of this huge city, I've found a piece of home. As Kin first told me: "life is beautiful, eat good sushi!" More...

Sushi by Boū operates out of a few different spaces in the city (and beyond), including this discreet "speakeasy" location on West 20th Street in the flatiron district. Omakase is the name of the game: select either the $50/person, 30 minute experience, or spring for the $100/person, 60 minute "bougie package." Reservations can be conveniently booked through Yelp. Tonight, my girlfriend and I were party to the 7:15 seating, receiving 12 pieces of sushi each over the following 30 minutes. Wave after wave of fresh fish was served: toro, chūtoro, otoro, hamachi, sake, unagi, ikura, etc. The chef was able to accommodate my shellfish allergy, swapping out the ebi and uni for other enjoyable selections, allowing me to double up on my favorites. After our time window closed, we thanked the chef, paid the bill, and headed down the several stairways. Being able to watch, counter-side, as each piece of fish was readied, added a whole new dimension to the sushi experience. This is a worthwhile omakase and I'd be happy to return, or explore one of their other locations. More...

Wow, what an experience!  This was my first try at Omakase, which I learned means you basically get what the chef gives you, like a trust fall only with food.  My friend made a reservation and we didn't go inside until 10 minutes before our set time. We hung at the bar until the main table was ready, which is a sushi bar. There's only room for I'm guessing 8 ppl at the high table. The chef asked about allergies and any dislikes and we got started.  I tried fish roe for the first time (not a fan of the popping, but tasted fresh and dare I say, yummy).  There are a lot of seared pieces (if that's the word for the sushi that's heated with a flame torch) and many that are cold and raw. The seaweed taco was amazing and I dream about the pickled sushi they served. My least favorite was the sweet shrimp, as the texture was not for me (slimy or sticky plus raw shrimp-y). When the flow of sushi was done, the chef asked if there was anything we liked enough to try again but I was truly satisfied. I can only eat but so many raw pieces of sushi before surrendering. In the end, the bill was roughly $250 for 2 ppl, including our drinks.  We didn't leave right away, we sat at the bar and had a few more cocktails and sake, maybe spending a total of 1.5hrs inside all together, maybe less, and these drinks were included in that total  bill. The meal itself lasted about 30 minutes.  To me, it was a pricey outing (for my friend, who kindly treated me) but worth it for the combination of dining experience and introduction to a different kind of sushi than I'm used to. I find this is a good option to celebrate events or stepping stones in life, maybe before a show or when you have something else planned after. Otherwise it could feel like you're short changed based on how quickly the time goes by on such a pricey outing. More...

Very unique and interesting spot for omakase sushi. It is hidden right next to jue Lan club with a subtle speakeasy vibe and we almost missed it while searching for the restaurant. You enter through a series of graffiti lined tunnels and staircases before finally arriving at the restaurant. The interior was warm and cozy with a fireplace and the decor reminded me of an early 20th century drawing room. We ordered drinks while we waited: the martini was too strong for my taste but the beer was very refreshing. We were seated at the counter at our scheduled appointment time and the sushi chef served twelve consecutive courses of various types of fish. My personal favorites were the fatty tuna, eel and wagu with uni. Their uni was incredibly fresh just the way it should be and the chef was very friendly and interactive which made the experience fun and enjoyable.Even though the food was delicious we still felt hungry after the 12 courses were complete. We used a special offer with the buy one get one gift card which we redeemed for our dinner, but the regular price would have been $50 per person and honestly the food really did not feel filling for that price point. It would be a better value if they offered 3 or 4 more courses, and we actually purchased additional food at a different restaurant after dinner to satisfy our cravings. More...

One of the best omakase experiences I have had in NYC! The restaurant is a bit hidden and it's definitely a smaller and more intimate atmosphere, but I loved it because the sushi chefs (we had Jimmy), owner, and the other patrons made the place so lively! You essentially have a 30 minute reservation for $50 for 12 pieces (we got a bonus holiday one - blue fin tuna with a sort of tofu sauce - which was absolutely delicious). The sushi ranged from uni to toro to scallops, so basically you got a taste for everything. Everything tasted very fresh and there wasn't one piece that I didn't enjoy. I do regret not trying one of their drinks as well since they all looked so refreshing. I never got the email for the complimentary gift card and was nervous I wouldn't be able to combine them. I told the hostess the situation and he found a way to make it work. Very appreciative of the great service! Even though I used the Yelp Elite offer essentially making it ~$40 per person including tip, I think $50 before tip is also a great price for the experience. Highly recommend! More...

Came here a few weeks ago, food was amazing. Also the sushi chef was super fun and funny and we had a great dinner night. All the staff was super friendly as well, I highly recommend sushi by bou . Location was small, but if you're looking for quality sushi without the large venue I recommend you check them out! More...

We've had omakase twice (both were more expensive than Sushi by Bou) but our meal tonight was just as good! The sushi was fresh and delicious. The sushi chef was also very sweet. I was full by the end of the 13 pieces and my husband was satisfied (we grab another meal afterward!) I recommend their sake!! More...

This adventure was for the experience! This was our first Omakase experience ever and it was great. Its a speak easy setting with great vibes. The host was amazing, with great conversation. The drinks were strong. The chefs were funny and great vibes. We lucked out with having the last seating for the night so we were a bit more laxed in timing. The overall experience was unique and we loved it. Would highly recommend it for sushi lovers and a 1 time experience! More...

Buo (flatiron) claims to be the rare double threat - quality drinks and food. It delivers on both. Bou really does deliver that "speakeasy surprise" effect by wowing you after subverting  expectations. Unless you are royalty, you will not be disappointed here. And if you are royalty, and not a total snoot, im sure youll have a great time too. *** heads up: even tho the website and promo material seems to stress a very scheduled/quick experience you in fact have more time than you think. A 30 minute option is actually booked for 45 mins. The 60 minute punny "bou-gey" experience(which i had) is actually booked for 90 mins. So relax, take your time- GET MORE COCKTAILS (we had a 3/3 excellent cocktail experience) and really savor this great experience that can even make a seasoned NYer (my gf) feel like she stumbled across something fresh More...

Wow - I honestly didn't think I liked uni before I tried it here! It was my first omakase experience despite eating Japanese a few times a week since I was a kid. Everything was delicious, especially the uni, shrimp, and toro. A lot of different tastes throughout the twelve courses from sweet yuzu to truffle salt made it clear that the restaurant thoughtfully prepared all the fish. The uni was so richly flavorful in this delicious way that I never had before. The shrimp literally melted in my mouth. And the toro was so incredibly fresh with a really pleasing texture. I would highly recommend the thirty minute, $50 omakase for a quick meal but would splurge for the sixty minute meal if I wanted to take my parents or close friend over a few drinks. The experience itself was amazing aside from one small observation. As a joke, our chef kept playfully pushing the timer back and forth with the other chef which didn't seem sanitary as he went straight back to preparing the next course. I also had a little snafu during payment where the manager said the Bou gift card (from the Yelp Elite Black Friday promotion) wasn't accepted at this location but he graciously made a top-side adjustment to our bill once we went through the fine print together and recorded the gift card ID number to apply afterwards. Thanks for the great experience!PRO TIP: You can get a free shot of sake if you text "BOU" to 44622 and they also have Instagram challenges for a free handroll and shot posted on their wall. More...
