It has taken me a while to write this review. Pros: Most of my family's experiences were positive. a)They do a great job with young kids, helping them build self confidence and coordination. Both my kids benefitted from this. b) During some tough times they were a constant. It is nice for kids to have the same place to go to when changing from preschool to elementary, from one home to another, etc. c) You get to know many nice people. I met two really nice mom's and many nice families. d) Trip to Korea and China - I love to travel. I had not done any international traveling with my kids until the TKD club trip. It was wonderful and very reasonably priced. I was pleasantly surprised by how nice our accommodations were. We made some great memories as a family and had experiences we would not have on our own. e) My kids each earned first level black belts. Due to giving up almost a year of our family's extra-curricular activities while doing estate work following my father's death, it took us longer than expected to have the kids reach black belt. But Master Lee stuck with us and we got it done. f) Because we had signed a contract it did not cost any extra for the delayed completion g) They have enlarged the space and it is really great! h) The after school program was wonderful and helped my kids as they worked to review earlier levels in preparation for black belt testing.Cons: a) Pricing is not posted. You wonder if everyone is paying equivalent amounts. You get a discount for signing up for longer time or more family members, but still it is expensive and it would be nice if pricing was more straightforward. Belt testing and some specialized gear is additional(these have consistent & clear pricing). b) Contracts are written to lock you in for multiple years. I would definitely recommend not signing a contract until your child has done classes there for a bit to see if it is a good fit. I read contracts. Both wanted a multi year commitment. I was ok with initial contract to black belt, but had problems with the second one as I had told the boys should keep going, but could stop if they wanted too. I had shared this commitment with Master Lee. When you do enter a contract make sure to cross off parts you don't agree to, have Master Lee initial those changes and give you a copy of the contract. c) When you are leaving be clear. Give sufficient notice (whatever was agreed to in writing ie 30/60/90 days/annual). DON'T put your account on "hold." I was talked in to that and it really spoiled an otherwise good experience. We got it sorted out in the end. But if I had it to do over I would not agree to be put on hold, even if it meant we had to pay extra a future time, if kids rejoined. d) Wish there had been more options for parents and kids to take classes at same time before meals. I spent allot of time there sitting. I would have loved to be in all age or adult class at the same time getting some exercise. They have evening weekday family classes, but they conflicted with our dinner and bed times. With the larger space they may be able to add this. That is it. Overall it was very positive. My family and I have been training here for almost 10 years now. My eldest daughter and I are now 3rd degree black belts and my younger daughter should be a junior black belt soon. As you can guess, we all highly recommend this school. Master Lee has an amazing way with kids, even shy or differently abled ones, and I have seen so many children become confident and strong young adults through this program. Master Oh, who joined the studio later, is also an excellent instructor, both with children and adults. I never imagined that, at my age, I would become a martial artist, but it is an excellent way to keep up my fitness and strength as I age. Great for anyone, any skill level, age or ability! More...

Hello everybody! I just want you to know if there is anybody I would reccomend as a Teacher it would be Master Lee and Master Ooh. They have done an excellent job at explaining an being part of my growth and development. I learned a lot of moves and practiced a lot even at home. I was excited to be part of the class everytime and the energy was always very high and the teachers are always encouraging and enthuiastic. I came here to for self defense and to increase my confidance. I gained those skills, even when I had many challenges and difficulties and wanted to stop, master Lee told me how great I was as a student and could potentially become a teacher. I felt proud, and knew I had to overcome some hurtacles and obstacles in my way. I will say too have fun and don't get to stressed about everything. Also be serious too when it is the time for it. Sunrise Taekwondo is great me and my children loved it! We were really shy and scared at first with the fierceness and masculinity of the teachers but do not be intimdated! they are very kind, friendly, generous, and patient with the students. WE were blessed to be part of the school and we are wanting to continue going especially after seeing the expansion and remodeling of the studio! Sunrise TaeKwon do taught me a lot about Korean martial arts. I first learned about how to count to 10 in Korean. Then we learn stretches, forms, and 9 step movement technique. There were many other people training in the classroom. Some days only a few people, which help me focus in more. You are provided with a free Gi and two weeks for a trial period to see if you like it or not. Then you make the commitment to go and I did, and it was well worth it. I learned new kicks such as the x kick and spinning back kicks. We also get to break boards which is really fun in the test. I also really like how the teachers work with you one on one, you get a up close personal interaction with them. There are also sparring classes I took on Saturdays, and I would highly recommend buying your own gear it is well worth it. I also went to one of the tourtaments and it was amazing to see the other schools perform and to see sunrise to an excellent job as well. Thank you very much for teaching. We love master Lee, master Oh, and master Evan!! They are all super good with kids and know how to get their attention. They are very playful yet there is discipline when necessary. They make the kids understand the negative situation and make it into a positive situation. My son was very shy, and now has learned to be very confident. Sunrise Tae Kwon Do has provided me with a unique opportunity that has really opened my eyes. Sunrise Tae Kwon do has dismissed all my pre-conceived notions about what Tae Kwon do was as a martial arts. I am impressed by Master Lee and Master Oh's instruction of the ancient art.Sunrise Tae Kwon do has a practical approach to its teachings, which I have come to really appreciate. Master Lee and Master Oh's practical approach to traditional Tae Kwon do in conjunction with their no nonsense self-defense by incorporating Hap Ki Do makes their studio a world class establishment.The environment is great for fostering positive relationships with others and the school provides a safe environment for learning. Master Lee was supposed to call me back about a partial refund because I wasn't able to participate for more than 1 class because of a knee injury but we paid for the 2 week trial. My family loves learning taekwondo at Sunrise Taekwondo with Master Lee and Master Oh. We've been studying there for about 3 years and I can't think of a more professional, caring and family-like environment for learning a martial art and also making some great friends among the other families who also study here. I enrolled my two boys when Master Won Lee first opened his studio on the West side of Portland. They were his students for three years. Both boys enjoyed the classes very much. As a parent, you will be especially delighted at the great care Master Lee takes to get to know each of his students and their particular needs. Master Lee is a dynamic and charismatic instructor of authentic Taekwondo. His mere presence commands respect, yet he has a wonderful way with children and they listen and follow his instructions closely. He uses humor and is so personable that even the most shy child warms to him quickly. I cannot recommend him more highly. He also teaches classes for adults and offers private lessons in addition to group lessons. Everyone who has taken his classes agrees, he is simply the best! As his classes have grown, so has his staff. Master Lee has taken great care to hand pick staff members who complement his style of teaching and as such, you know you are in good hands regardless of who is teaching the particular class.
