This is one style of food I really cant get at home and kinda lunge at everywhere.Came in for happy hour after seeing them online.Tried the coffee old fashioned. Def an interesting take.Fried shrimp app was good. Def sized for 2.Ordered the fried catfish plate, def enjoyed it.I may be back before heading home. This seems like a good, close spot to grab ribs.Too bad they had no gator on the menu.Atmosphere was sports bar.Service was friendly n attentive. More...
Legit the best fried chicken in San Diego. This restaurant brings a different culture more Louisiana while providing literally the best chicken I've ever had!
The food is tasty. The staff is friendly and great atmosphere for football. Good place to hangout on Sunday, especially for saints fans.
We have been sleeping in this not so hidden gem. The pork belly fries and the grape kool aid margarita was amazing. The customer service was really good as well. We will definitely go back!!!
First timer here and I have to say I liked it. To start, their happy hour is Monday-Saturday! You can't beat that really. There's plenty of items to choose from. I had their fried pickles and a margarita and both were good. My only concern was parking and I basically found it right away. I'll definitely be back. More...
Awesome. Walked up w my friend, twenty minutes later was well into some hush puppies and a plate of fried frog legs. Just solid, delicious food. Sat outside, listened to the badass soundtrack, was chill and good. Parking garage across the street. More...
I’m a veteran from Georgia and I was amazed at how authentic this food tasted. I will definitely return for more.
This place is what downtown needed! That comfort eatery! The food is finger licking good! Crab cakes, chicken, steak! I like how there's a lot of ethnicities enjoying their food. Strong bartenders, Zebbie and Michael killing it behind the bar! Hip atmosphere. Cocktails are on point! Manager very productive helping the staff. One of my hidden gems here. Highly recommend! Great food, ambience, and customer service. Modern chic soulful decor. Thanks for making my Fifty bday celebration fun. Sadie the server was wonderful !!!
This place, quite frankly, serves the best freaking food I have ever had! And I love to eat. We started with the Mac n cheese flight and my mind was blown. Three different samples of melt in your mouth- taste explosion versions of an all time fave. The fried okra was delish. It was served with two yummy sauces but was great eaten solo. For entrees we had the shrimp and grits and the helping hand. I've never seen my 20 year old son happier! He ordered a side of yams and holy cow the sweet juicy softness of those yams! This truly was the best food and the service was EXCELLENT! Our waitress was fun and enthusiastic and the manager even stopped by to check on us. A top notch restaurant in a fun area of San Diego. The food here is amazing. Our table got the chicken and waffles, Mac and cheese, cheese grits, and greens. Phenomenal. The only issue I have is how expensive the bottomless mimosa deal is- $30...?!?!?! I know San Diego is expensive but that is ridiculous. Although the food is amazing, the place does not seem to be generating a big enough crowd. The restaurant should be PACKED Saturday's and Sunday's for brunch. I'm not sure why it has not been the last few times I've been.Regardless, everyone should stop and try the food. They know how to cook chicken. More...
Great food, great atmosphere, great servers!! What more can I say. I loved it! Visiting San Diego I was craving some soul food. This place hit the spot!!
I ran across Suckerfree on a search for a place to host a dinner for my coworkers during an out of town conference. The staff here were so awesome. Very accommodating and friendly. Not only did everyone love the drinks and atmosphere, but there were nothing but rave reviews about the food and how fast everyone was served. There was about 35-40 of us. I was thoroughly impressed. A few weeks later now and my bosses are still commenting on how much they enjoyed it when they pass my desk. More...
Food great! Service is great and caute! Music is spot on and very nostalgic! Experience overall....10!!!
First time coming here and it wasn't busy when we went which was a good thing. We got our food super fast. We tried a lot of different food and we were not disappointed. I can't believe we never heard of this place before. We've been lacking soul food restaurants in San Diego. We will def come back to this place! More...
This place was recommended by a friend and we greatly enjoyed our dinner! The chicken fried chicken was DELICIOUS - very moist and tender with a light breading and amazing southern gravy! It was served with perhaps the best mashed potatoes I've ever had and green beans. Check this out and be a good friend by recommending it to your friends More...
My boyfriend who was raised In that south surprised me for dinner and brought me here. Omg, this place is amazingly good. Everyone was nice, we got two different plates and they were both great. Listen, this is the best soul food restaurant in San Diego... it's quietly hidden in the gas lamp district. I stumbled upon on a recommendation from my Lyft driver. I first got there the waitress from Arkansas was absolutely amazing. She was friendly. Answered questions and made the best recommendations. Make sure you check out the chicken friend chicken. The breast is moist, green beans bangin, the gravy and potatos my GAWD. Also ask for a side of Mac n cheese. The decor and drinks were also delightful. And I love the Saints flag. Tupac is my fav. Spectacular food. Seriously one of the best meals I've ever had. I ordered the pulled pork (literally melted in my mouth) with some cheesy grits and a delicious Bloody Mary. Found this Soul Food restaurant while in San Diego. This is different from the average soul food eatery. I would call this place a Soul Food sports bar. Also I found the drink menu a little entertaining because you can order a Kool-Aid margarita in grape or red flavor. Also surprisingly, they sell Old English 800 malt liquor, I didn't think that beer was even made any more. The fried chicken was seasoned well and the candied yams was superb. I also had the banana pudding for desert and it was rich and flavorful. I recommend stopping by if your in San Diego. More...
OMG! Fried chicken, green fried tomatoes, shrimp & grits were delicious great Atmosphere, friendly waitresses, ideal location

We recently had our team dinner here for 30 people, and I just want to say the staff was so attentive, communicative and cheerful. The food came out fresh, warm and perfectly plated. The vibe and restaurant was very hip, modern and inviting. The drinks were perfect and the bartender was on it when it came to serving everyone drinks quickly. I just want to say the chicken and waffles was my favorite!! I literally think it was better than Roscoes but that's my opinion haha. Anyhow, thank you guys for a great experience! See you soon! The food was really good. The portions are huge and you can share sides with someone. The fried chicken was some of the best I’ve had and the mac and cheese was delicious.
This was our first time going and with my girlfriend being very familiar with preparing most of these dishes I felt we’d not cook and try it. Straight up the food was on point especially the Okra and the greens. The Mac and Cheese was very delicious. With our first selections of the gizzards and the crab cakes we were informed “let me check to see if we have any left.. both items? Then our server said they were being removed from the menu. To be honest the next review is of our server - both my girl and I are in the food service industry and we were both like “he had to check to see if these items were a go no-go? We also realize that when you are seated and the server comes to greet they bring salt/pepper/hot sauce.. we got squat! Had to ask ... our server found his time better spent outside on the sidewalk with the hostess!.. our bus person was on point with tea refills and long after we were done my girl finally had to ask another server for to-go containers and the check... which she did.. she received the $15 dollar tip and our server got $5My girl is convinced that it’s because she is black and I am white and it was a slight to her!.. I sincerely hope not.. she said we will go back and see for sure More...
Our host was John and he was so down toEarth and cool. The food was big portions so I enjoyed that and I'm newly pescatarian and they accommodated my no meat preferences. The music playlist was bomb! I really appreciate them! And they're black owned!! Love it. Will definitely be back More...

UPDATED review first thing the service was great everyone was friendly and very punctual the general manager Terrell displayed exceedingly customer service along with our waitress, I believe her name was destiny....the bathroom is really clean, and smells good which was a plus for me...the ambiance is really nice I love the vibe of the restaurant we started with the fried okra, really fresh and crispy well seasoned. I ordered the 2 piece white meat, my boyfriend ordered the 6 pcs chicken strips, Mac and cheese and fries ....The Mac and cheese was very good had a lot of flavor really nice hot and cheesy, the chicken strips are really well seasoned ( if you are a chicken person go to their other restaurant streetcar merchant ) the fries were very fresh and hot.. food and service were great
Really enjoyed dining here. Black owned in the heart of downtown San Diego that brings the flavor of New Orleans to The West Coast.I ordered the sides of Ritz Mac & Cheese, Sweet Potatoes, and Fried Okra app (vegetarian options are slim). I also order both of their Old Fashioned varieties, pretty good. The service was great, and waitress was very helpful in helping me pick the best choices. A friend of mine ordered the Crab Butter Boil. The potatoes were undercooked and it doesnt actually gave any crab in it. Seating outdoor was available and an enjoyable experience. More...

Love the atmosphere and the servers
Seating: 3-starsDecor: 3.5-starsSpeed: 3 starsFood: 4 starsPrice: 3 starsDrinks: 4.5 starsWe were a party of 3, and only 4 other people were in the entire restaurant. The place probably seats 30 people easily. Everything was delivered a bit slowly, which can't be reassuring for rush-hour dining. The interior design has a lot of potential, a nice urban/rap/music theme. But lots of areas in the place are still undeveloped and could use more decoration. The TV situation needs some help. They had approx. 6 TV's, but most are not viewable unless you're sitting at the bar (wall seats are approx. 30 feet from the TV's), that's going to be a detriment during football and basketball seasons. Although the waiter was polite and took our order quickly, we waited for 10 minutes for 3 cocktails. Once delivered, they were really quite delicious. We had an appetizer of the Mac & Cheese Flight. It was really great, but again served slowly. Each variety of mac was pretty great, very flavorful and unique. The portion covered in Comeback Sauce was truly delicious. The crab portion was really good as well. It was a bit expensive, though, for three small portions of mac & cheese that would barely fill a regular size bowl. Had the shrimp po'boy for the main course. It had all the flavor and design of those that I've eaten in New Orleans. The batter on the shrimp was quite good. Only problem was that the shrimp were very very small. Small can be okay when there are a lot in the sandwich, and there were a lot; it was packed with shrimp. But when shrimp are that small, they get overcooked quickly, as they were that day.Overall, a nice place to try some southern-style food. But there's lots of available options downtown for southern cuisine. Going to try again during football season. More...
Great atmosphere. My family will definitely be back again.

Stopped by on a Saturday night and really enjoyed everything we had. Fried Okra was excellent, and so was the Fried Chicken.Hush Puppies and Collard Greens are the best I've had since moving to California. Reminded me of the food in Alabama and Mississippi when I was stationed there. Also the Banana bread desert was fabulous. Drinks were good and it is an very excellent Southern Fair restaurant. Also the staff was very nice and prices were great.A definite 5 star dinner. More...
our server was named Moe she was very pretty and had awesome customer service skills. The food was very good and my drink was the best That Loud. Thanks suckerfree and Moe
Chanel our waitress was very hospitable and so attentive. The cornbread was definitely on point. Cute restaurant with creative menu.
CBGB! That's the name of this dish! It's amazing! Stop messing around and come get it. This place is sooo good! I was worried because the traffic in the location was light at the time but, it was because of a baseball game going on at the time. I was so wrong. This place is real good! More...
The food was great and the customer service was amazing. Definitely my go to spot when I come to San Diego from now on.
the food was fantastic! And the atmosphere was fantastic as well.

Great vibe and great food
First time in SD. First time at Suckerfree. Chicken was fresh and delicious and the drinks were perfect. I recommend "That Loud" made with cannabis infused Vodka. Michael was our waiter and he was everything and more. Really went above and beyond for us. More...
I enjoyed myself the food was excellent the prices was great. Staff was wonderful .
SuckerFree will be a go to spot for me, my family and I would recommend it to friends visiting GasLamp every time. I appreciate the food, namely the fried chicken. Other sides including butter beans, macaroni, and baked yams are also legit. Best part is drinks: Hurricane, Blacker the Berry and Henny-Colada (which will soon be Remy Colada) are my personal favorites. Good menu with many options I still want to try. I probably under play what is the best part of SuckerFree, the music and ambiance. 90s hip hop with plenty of similar hip hop culture decoration throughout the restaurant. Always a energetic but easy going vibe and service. Good for bar seating and they are also able to handle large groups. More...
Bomb!!!! I am picky about my shrimp and grits but decided to try it here and it was cooked to perfection!!! So much flavor and just the right amount of spice. The staff is extremely nice and welcoming. The atmosphere and design/architecture is amazing. Everytime I come to SD from here on out I will definitely be stopping by. More...
If you haven't been here yet, smack yourself. Because this spot is it! I love that The Gaslamp has Southern cuisine. Real authentic Southern cuisine. This fried chicken will make you cry with happiness while you stuff your face. Mac n cheese. Shut. Up. Amazing. Mashed potatoes. Get. Out. Mouthwatering. The decor, the staff, the drinks. Go. Now. You're welcome. More...
Visiting my sister-in-law from Arkansas and this is a place she has been wanting to try so we went for a late lunch/early dinner. There weren't a lot of people when we arrived but as the evening went on it started to pick up. I'm always skeptical about any non-Southern restaurant cooking Southern food but I must say this place definitely does a good job.First, the ambiance and the decor in the restaurant were good. They had very large pictures of Tupac, Mr. T on the wall. We also saw a picture of NWA on the ceiling. The music was awesome and the waitstaff was very friendly and helped us quickly. The only thing I think they need to do is put a sign on the outside of the building for those who are driving by. We drove by and missed the restaurant the first time. We almost left and went somewhere else but decided to go back just in case we missed it and in fact, we did. A sign would help.Second, the food was great. Everything on the menu looked good and we had a hard time decided on what to eat. We finally decided and ordered the following:1. We started off with the hushpuppies. There were enough for the four of us at the table to have at least 3. I've had better back home but they were good. 2. 2-pc dark meat chicken with a waffle. The chicken was super hot and juicy. The waffle was nice and tasted very good. No problems there.2. Mississippi Catfish was good but was too spicy for my wife so she swapped meals with her sister. Beware if you don't like spicy food. It comes with a pretty large piece of catfish and fries.3. Pork Chop with Green Beans and Mashed Potatoes. This is what my wife swapped plates with and she thought it was good.4. My son ordered the Shrimp and Grits. It came with about 6 pieces of very large shrimp in the grits and crawfish etouffee. He couldn't eat much of it because it was spicy as well but it was seasoned well and tasted very good. (I tried a bit of his).Overall, great atmosphere, music, and good food. I will definitely visit again on my next visit to San Diego. Hopefully, it's soon. More...
It took a long time for the food to come out but when it did....it was amazing! The fried chicken was probably the best I've ever tasted so far.
I'm from Louisiana - so I instantly was drawn in to this spot. The music was cool and the menu had me before I could walk in. I was having a taste for seafood & the low country boil immediately jumped off the menu at me. The shrimp were large and it was seasoned very well. Satisfied my seafood craving! I'm also a big fan of Macaroni so I had an order. And omg, for $6, it was a large portion and definitely worth it, if not more! Extremely creamy and cheesy (lol). I sat at the bar and the bartender was really cool and helpful to me with ordering too. More...

I enjoyed my experience at Suckerfree. I'm a southern born and bred transplant to San Diego from Jackson, Ms. and New Orleans, La. and appreciate it when I find the culinary vestiges of the south way out here on the west coast. That being said, the menu was well done and covered many aspects of southern cuisine. The staff was wonderful, very attentive and had a great attitude, (playful, yet helpful and knowledgeable about the menu). We had the mac and cheese flight and fried green tomatoes to start. The mac and cheese though tasty was basic with an "ok" sauce, mixed in with pasta but with very flavorful toppings (bbq pulled pork, bacon and ranch, and crab). The fried green tomatoes, though tasty were over breaded, which brings me to the entrees. Pork chops for her and fried catfish for me. From what she told me the pork chops were excellent, and from me so was the catfish but with the same issue as was present with the green tomatoes. It was way over breaded. Don't get me wrong, the breading was tasty and the fish was well cooked and of good quality but there was too much breading. In the end, I think these guys have a good thing here and I'll be back. I'm sure they will only get better and I plan to be around for it. More...
Good soul food. Good service this visit.
Foods always great and service was amazing. I enjoyed it very much and will return soon.
Server was great. Unsure when we walked in because there was no one in there, but food was great!
Hush puppies and mac and cheese were excellent. Pork on sandwich was very dry. Collard greens need seasoning. The cost of the single waffle was too much.
Awesome service, awesome crab cakes, fresh cut fries, perfect scene with the perfect music! Love this place!
Food and service were outstanding!! Our group had the shrimp and grits, fried chicken, Fried catfish, and chicken tenders, and they were fantastic! We were seated outside and it was a great time. More...
Everything on the menu look incredible. It was EXTREMELY hard to decide what I wanted. You're going to over order and not even feel bad about it. Trust. We ended up getting the Mac and cheese flight for a starter. It's a pretty good helping of a barbecue pork Mac, a fried chicken Mac, and a crab Mac. If you're sensible, you'll order that to share and a protein. But I also wanted to try the mashed potatoes (which were delicious). The chicken tenders are MASSIVE. The 3 tenders for $10 is plenty of food and are the juiciest. Not too greasy, but come out hot and fresh. The highlight of my meal was the Blacker the Berry cocktail ($10). It was a perfectly crafted mix of blackberry purée, blackberry vodka and soda water. I cannot recommend it enough. They were very cool about bringing us a bunch of to-go boxes ahead of time since I knew as soon as I ordered that it was too much food. Live a little and try a lot. More...
This was some of the best soul food I've had in a long time. I chose the Catfish, a dish my mother did so well, and which I haven't enjoyed since I was young. The dish at Suckerfree was exceptional! The crust was so crispy, thick, and delicious. The fish underneath was tender and succulent. I loved it! The french fries that came with the fish were just as good. They make the soft version, but with all the seasoning and taste of those popular fast food fries. And the pan fried cornbread was fabulous! I usually like a sweet cornbread, as that's the way I've made it for years. This cornbread wasn't sweet, but hearty, and full of great corn taste. The servings are so large I took home a whole second meal. I'm very much looking forward to digging in again. More...
Great experience!! Great staff.
Stopped in for lunch and our party of four was seated right away. The fried pickles, which were thinly sliced were excellent. I had the 2 pieces of chicken with a waffle. The chicken was very good, although just a bit overcooked. The waffle was a bit undercooked. But overall, the food and service were great. More...
My friends invited me to come here for dinner but I eat extremely healthy and pretty much everything is either fried or has dairy in it. The cooks and server were so nice and helpful. They were able to cook a non butter grilled chicken salad with a yummy peach vinaigrette. My meal was gluten free, dairy and soy free. Thank you guys so much for accommodating to my food allergies! Amazing service! Definitely will come back again. More...
Who doesn't love fried chicken And then if you combine it with a big fluffy waffle now we're talking!!! Fired chicken was super moist even for a breast. Waffle all by itself was very tasty as well. I ordered the Tennessee hot chicken wings now if you like spicy food order them but I enjoy spicy but I should have known better than to order Tennessee hot cause I know it's a type of spice I can't handle and sure enough this was a type of spicy that is too much for me but that's my own fault that I didn't enjoy them next time I will order a different type my friends order the salt and pepper and they really enjoyed them. The Mac and cheese was awesome supper cheesy and gooey just like my mom uses to make!! (Yes I know super cliche). I didn't want to stop eating it even though I was stuffed!! My sister ordered the fried green tomatoes and those were also very good! Overall in the food department everything we tasted was very tasty! The ambiance of the restaurant was awesome. Hip hop music and the pictures on the walls are pretty cool!!"The only complaint was the service it's not the best.. Had to ask a couple of times to a few different people for basic things like napkins, ranch refill on water. They forgot to bring syrup and butter for the waffles. How can you not remember that you need to bring syrup with the waffle they should come with the plate automatically! It's not like the restaurant was busy there were probably about 4 other tables that were occupied. Other than that I do want to check it out again! More...
Was there a few weeks ago, excellent service
Amazing food and even better service! My waiter was attentive and gave great conversation and and recommendations!! I'm a true southern girl from MS and VA, so being able to eat southern food in Cali was amazing!

Great food. Always makes us come back for more. Just wish the wait staff was a little quicker with the service
My Grandmother and I visited after Church.. She is in Love! We both had the Shrimp and Grits.. To die for...♥️

O.M.G. I haven't been anywhere like this before in San Diego. 5 stars for service, food and drinks! This place is amazing. We started with the flight mac and cheese. Each were delicious, my favorite being the crab truffle Mac and cheese. I got the fried po boy with shrimp. The flavors between the sweet pickles and battered shrimp and sauce were heavenly. The biscuit was so good and the corn bread soooo yummy. Everything we got (including the fries) was 5 stars. We will absolutely be coming back to try everything on the menu! More...
Is it better than Roscoes? If you like the greasy southern fried chicken and butter soft waffles, roscoes has the edge. The quality and taste is on point with a cleaner less greasier feel at Suckerfree. They have a larger drink selection too Bc they are a bar. You really can't go wrong with either. If you like 2pac, and chicken and waffles for brunch, this is the spot for you! We had GQ for our server and provided exceptional service. More...
You know a place is great when you're talking about coming back before you even finish your meal. Suckerfree has the best chicken in town, hands down. Don't even bother looking elsewhere. Besides the chicken we had the Mac & Cheese flight, which was inventive and delicious, my fave being the crab version. The fried green tomatoes were OUTSTANDING. The pulled pork sandwich, which was moist and tender, good bun to meat ratio, really delicious pickles. Crab cakes, which were awesome. Shrimp & Grits, so very cheesy, perfectly seasoned shrimp. I was so sad that I couldn't manage a dessert, so this is on my MUST RETURN list.Other than the food we had excellent service, beautiful open space with nice decor and music. More...
Fantastic food, cool atmosphere and location. We shared the catfish dinner and it was way more food than two people can eat. Great crust and perfectly cooked fish. Friend got the chicken and waffles and gave me a sample. The waffle was so good I regretted not getting the dish. Mac-n-Cheese flight is silly. Don't go there without ordering this dish if you're vaguely interested in Mac-n-cheese. Only reason I gave it a 4 star is the price. It is a little pricey but I guess the Gas Lamp demands higher prices to pay the rent. No complaints otherwise. More...
This place is amazing. Our server, Mike, was awesome! He was polite, friendly and made our experience fun! He provided exceptional service even in the middle of a hectic Sunday lunch rush! I have to recommend the fried chicken. I haven't had chicken that good since I left South Carolina. To top it off, they had pimento cheese...PIMENTO CHEESE Y'ALL! I was ecstatic and it was delicious! I scraped up every last bit and thought about ordering a second order, but I was already getting full. They have greens like mom used to make, and I somehow made room for that delicious banana pudding. My biggest accolade, though: the sweet tea was on point! I would give more stars if I could, and will definitely be back soon! More...

It was a nice restaurant. But our waitress told me they were out of greens , banana pudding and a drink I wanted. But I kept seeing other wait staff serving others with these items.. This would've been 5 stars across the board but our server was just not very good. The food was amazing though dipping sauce not served with the fried okra. More...

UPDATE: The manager reached out to me and we talked... I have an understanding of what was going on and is more than willing to fix the problems my family and I had. Will go back.. great food.. great fun.. I have been to this restaurant a few times and my service was excellent. so, of course, I took my daughter and my family who flew in for from out of town (Memphis Tennessee Jacksonville Florida Fort Worth Texas) to this wonderful restaurant that I've bragged about. only to have to deal with a bartender/waitress who did not want to be there. She was impatient with us as we tried to get our orders in she was rude on several different occasions to my father and to my other guest. She would frequently forget drink orders and then say oh it was the kitchen's fault or someone else's fault. At the end of the night I had my two aunts who flew in last minute show up to order food and drinks food to go. When my aunt tried to go pay her for the food and drinks she ignored my aunt on several different occasions. my aunt asked for her several times by calling he.."Miss".. my father and one of my other guest tried to get her attention as they watched her look away. Once she realizes they saw her ignoring them she pointed to a fictional male guest and said she was helping them. My aunt and another one of my guest tried several different times to get the check split and she would refuse to do it by telling them she couldn't till everyone was there or until everyone had ordered or if she just couldn't do it. After watching my guest make several attempts to have the checks split I just told her to charge it all to me. I spent $400 on my daughters graduation meal at this restaurant only to get below subpar service from this young lady. As I paid for the meal I left a $20 tip this tip was for the cooks my food was excellent my experiences before at this restaurant we're excellent this time in front of my family from out of town it was horrible. This is the restaurant I hope to bring my husband to when he comes back from his deployment because we both truly enjoyed the food and the atmosphere but if I had to deal with such subpar service as an employee who does not obviously want to be there I will happily take my money elsewhere. FINALLY! A black owned soul food restaurant in San Diego! Great vibe! Great food! Great customer service! Love everything about this place. I recommend the shrimp and grits! Love this More...
Service is always great. Destiny has a warm, welcoming personality and took good care of my family. They have a gluten free version of their fried chicken that is phenomenal. I just grabbed pickup and they had it ready at the door, quick n easy. Their staff is pretty on point. Thanks for cooking gluten free, my mother hadn't had fried chicken in a decade! More...
Awesome food great atmosphere fantastic
Stumbled upon this urban gem in the Gaslamp district. It was exactly what I was looking for. Pleasant staff, Great atmosphere, Divine Food and Endless libations. I was introduced to a kool aide margarita, yes Koolaid. Perfect prices and melting pot of people. I will definitely visit again.Good music Good vibes More...
Can I tell you how much I enjoyed this place!? The food was superb and our server (who happened to be the bartender--for whatever reason) was wonderful! We went on a Wednesday night to celebrate a birthday and we were not disappointed. I am a Southern gurl (born and raised in Texas) and this food took me back home. I will definitely be going back again (and again) because the whole vibe was really chill. More...
Wonderful experience. Excellent location. This is a hidden gem. Being a Southern girl living in a Cali world, this food, ambiance, Southern hospitality is what I've been missing. The food was superb-- downhome cooking done right. The service was Wonderful and we enjoyed every moment of this experience. More...
I'm in love with this place. 1st time here and it was amazing. The music was on point. The vibe and atmosphere was chill. You can't go wrong with this place. The waitress was awesome. She was extremely pleasant, outgoing, friendly but most importantly prompt. All the staff was cool. Everybody was friendly including the busser. The food is great. Authentic southern cooking. This restaurant offers a vast variety of flavorful Lucious southern cuisine. We ordered the griddle banana bread, scrimp n grits, fried green tomatoes, crab cakes and fried chicken. Omg!!! Everything was delicious. My favorite was the banana bread. It was moist, very flavorful topped with syrup plus pecans. Simply Lucious. The portion size was small especially for the price yet the flavor was excellent. The crab cakes were delicious as well. Again small in portion yet gigantic flavor. There was definitely more crab then bread filler.. which is always a plus. I highly recommend this place. We will positively be returning in the near future. More...
Being born and raised in San Diego, I must say there's not too many soul food places that I would go back to. We had the Mac n cheese flight for starters. The pulled pork Mac was my favorite, followed by the crab Mac, and last the chicken Mac. For my entree, I had the 2 piece dark meat, with some collard greens and a biscuit. The fried chicken was fresh fresh tender and crispy. Our waitress had explained that their chicken is not frozen and made with fresh chicken. You can definitely taste the difference. Me and my lady also order some of their signature drinks, I got the Hurricane and my girl order the Loud which is a CBD infused cocktail. Both we're good and got us a little buzzed. *They play Hip Hop classics all day :) More...
The vibe was dope! Food wasn't that great, I've had way better chicken.
Went back again on Sunday 6/2. Shout Out to the bar staff and the MOD for making it a great night!OMG... everything was delicious. We went for happy hour and ordered Chicken Gizzards, Popcorn Catfish and Pork Belly Fries. They have half off Apps and 5$ Jameson from 3-7. The music is great( hip hop) and the atmosphere is really chill. I will definitely be back to try more of the menu...the best part is they have Crystal hot sauce. More...
I just want to personally Destiny for the amazing service! She was prompt and she took the time to fully explain the menu and the food was amazing! This place is extremely clean with an amazing staff! The bathroom was clean and smelled amazing! Thank you for the amazing experience SuckerFree! More...
Downtown in the heart of San Diego sits this cool kick back spot black owned business. Destiny, out waitress, was very nice and attended to our every need. There was a slight issue with my sister's food but the manager was quick to come out and handle that right away. Wait time was very slow but food was good. Alcoholic beverages are good and atmosphere is nice and spacious. If they pick up the pace and get food out faster things would be perfect. More...
Randomly stumbled upon this restaurant. We were seating very fast and our waitress was awesome. The food was really good! I had the chicken and waffles and my cousin had the omelet and loved every bite. The bartender went out of his way to ensure my cousin's Bloody Mary was A1 and she loved it. Not to mention it being a black owned establishment!!! Overall awesome More...
Delicious food with great seasoning. No salt or pepper needed! Portions are good. Waitstaff are personable and professional! Healthy food options ! Don’t miss out on going to check them out!! More...
The whole experience was great. From the friendly staff who greeted us to our amazing food. Our server was helpful and patient as this was our first time dining here. He made great recommendations. All of the food that we ordered was great. We ordered two different types of wings, chicken fried chicken, chicken and waffles and all for desserts that were available that night. I also ordered a Malibooya cocktail and it was perfection. Not one thing was disappointing. We loved the decor and music as we are big old school hip hop connoisseurs. We will definitely go back if we are in the area. More...
Great was great, the chicken was a tad bit salty but very tasty, service was above average. Servers were very professional and friendly a tad bit of a wait because they were short servers. Ambience was great, good music.
Excellent atmosphere and great food!!! This place offers an updated twist on classic dishes.
The smothered catfish was omg and the waffle of the day was amazing! Definitely will visit again.
Pretty cool chill place.
Loved the atmosphere and our waitress can't remember her name. Food was good the fish and shrimp could have had more seasoning. Overall it was good ! Drinks were everything ! Yes I will be going back More...
Fantastically seasoned southern comfort food. Killer fried chicken, fried pickles and Nashville hot chicken too, yams, shrimp & grits, banana bread with a to die for Pecan Bourbon sauce!! Great sweet tea!
Jacquelin Feisty Branch
The fried chicken, collar green, cornbread and the Kool-Aid Margarita & the Stay Woke cocktail was off the chain!!!! Love the old school atmosphere.
Service was slow, food was under seasoned
The food did not all arrive together so starting the meal was awkward the servers were friendly and accommodating
This place is so good! Best Mac and cheese and their deviled eggs are a MUST HAVE! I'm definitely going back!

Great food!!! Great customer service
Great service & even better food!! Rikel was our server, very kind and attentive! Fun atmosphere with Hip Hop music and rad decor!
Had the fried catfish PO Boy. It was delish. The service was great. I will definitely be back to try other dishes.
Very impressed with the food and the atmosphere .
This is one of my top 5 restaurants. As a first time visitor I didn't know what to expect but the food was delicious. I was going to take a picture of my meal but I ate it too fast. The fried green tomatoes were the best I ever had the mixed drinks were perfect and the pun used for the names brought nostalgia from this 80's baby. The catfish and hockey and waffles were excellent. The ambience and decor were classic Cali. I suggest anyone that's in the are that wants quality soul food and a great experience come here! More...
Went there today for Mother's Day. We were seated right away by a friendly hostess. The place is sparsely decorated (perfectly), with a giant picture of Mr. T. Come on!!! Awesome! I ordered a Hurricane to drink and hubby had "That Loud"..a drink made with cannabis infused vodka. Both were yummy, not watered down tasting and perfect. Our son had the chocolate cake shake. OMG!!! Did I already use the word "perfect"? The chocolate tasted real and not like it was out of a Hershey's bottle.I had the Mississippi Catfish which was tender and tasty and wonderful. Hubby had the CBGB (off the brunch menu). The biscuit was terrific, chicken perfectly cooked. He says he would've liked a bit more gravy, but was otherwise in heaven. My son had 2 pieces of white meat fried chicken (maybe a TAD over cooked) and a side of Mac &Cheese (which was amazing). Oh yeah...then I had another Hurricane.Service was great, attentive, and friendly. If we lived closer, we'd sit at the bar and be regulars..no doubt. I can't wait to go back!!! More...
A must when in the area. Service, cocktails and meal were perfection. We are definitely going back.
1st time guest, enjoyed everything will be back soon!
If fried food is your thing this is it. We ordered popcorn shrimp, popcorn chicken, popcorn catfish. Did not really care for the fried Green tomatoes . Spicy wings were very spicy, I enjoyed the barbecued wings the best. Great service. Their rendition of a piña colada was over-the-top delicious. More...
Mouthwatering fried chicken, best I've ever had. Grits, collards and mashed potatoes were also fantastic. Great atmosphere too. Will be back.

First time trying that food the fried chicken was so good
Great place to meet friends. Good food and drinks. Friendly staff.
All the food was amazing! Mac&Cheese and hush puppies were fire! I would go back just to get those again.
Service was great, food was orgasmic and the atmosphere was fun!
Loved the food. Very loud, but I understand why, it keeps the customers moving in and out to maximize business. This place needs a big lit up sign in front. We wouldn’t have been able to spot it easily without my map app. Will definitely be back to try more options. More...
This is truly a GEM. Great service. Great food. And great ambiance. I love that it plays hip hop music! We will definitely be back whenever we visit. I got the fried chicken, yams, and Mac and cheese and enjoyed everything. My husband got the pork chop! Good portions for everything. More...

We ate there for Easter the food was excellent
Great food and drinks. Will take my family here again...they all loved it! Kudos and the fried chicken is amazing!
Very good food, reminds of back home in Virginia
Rickel was an awesome host and waiter. She gave great info and assistance with the menu. My whole party loved their food, the atmosphere and the music. The fried pickles were fire (bomb.com) I went with Catfish nuggets appetizer, (didn't like those) I should've went with the actual catfish plate. My Husband's food was great-- chicken nugget PoBoy with a side on candied yams with extra brown sugar, the Kool aid Margarita needed more Kool aid and liquor... Also the tartar sauce was good. My ppls went with a pulled pork sandwich but she preferred the chicken nuggets appetizer. Also the chicken & waffles plate was great. We'd most definitely come back when we're in the area. More...
Our first night in San Diego brought us to this restaurant in the Gaslamp Quarter. The music was great, 90s hip hop. We ordered quite a bit: chicken and waffles, the 2 piece dark fried chicken with collards and candied sweets and mac and cheese, and finally the chicken fried chicken meal. Everyone was happy with everything, plates were cleaned however the $3 biscuit was a bust. I gave it 5 stars because the service made up for the cold, hard biscuit. Drinks were great too, I had the hurricane. It was so good, I bought the T-shirt. More...
The service and decor were great. The paintings are a great way to attract customers and the menu was inspired. It's definitely worth trying.
Came across this place on Instagram and finally had the chance to try it last Friday night. Considering it was a Friday night at peak dinner time my boyfriend and I were surprised it wasn't super packed as we were seated right away. It took a while to get our drink order taken but once our waitress came we ordered an orange cream soda ($5) and a Cinnamon Toast Crunch Shake ($9). It took 20 min for us to receive the shake but it was delicious!! It was thick and flavorful. Shortly after we placed our order. My bf ordered the pulled pork with a side of cornbread and I ordered 3 piece chicken tenders ($10) and a side of ritz Mac and cheese ($6). It took a while (20-25 min) for us to receive our food, which we thought was weird because it wasn't super packed. Once we received the food it was good! Our favorites were the pulled pork, chicken tenders and Mac and cheese. The chicken was tender and moist! The Mac and cheese was perfect and not super cheesy which I liked. We didn't care for the corn bread too much and felt like it was dry but could be because it's griddled. Highly recommend the comeback sauce it's like thousand island sauce but with a little kick! The menu changes frequently so there's other stuff we want to try including the Mac and cheese flight and chicken and waffles. Also liked how the beer menu featured all Local places. We wish the entrees came with a side versus all a carte as it does get pricey. The sides can definitely be shared. Parking could be hard with street parking or in nearby parking structures with a fee. We want to go back and hope we experience better service. The food was good! More...
OMG. Somebody, please try the banana bread. It's a real party in your mouth. Every thing was amazing. I will definitely revisit Suckerfree Southern Plate and bar
Had my birthday dinner there. Food great, waitress was awesome. Recommend this place.

Great atmosphere and food and music! It’s for the culture ✊ !!! ❤️
Suckerfree was delicious! I tried on a quick day trip to San Diego and happened to stumble on the restaurant. I loved the vibes, food, atmosphere, music, decor, drinks, staff and culture! Being from LA and enjoying hip hop and music I enjoyed my time there! I also like being around many groups of positive black faces just enjoying the sunny day and establishment! I had the shrimp po boy and kool aid margarita. The fries and biscuits were a little disappointing but overall good! I also tried my cousin catfish and Mac n cheese really good! My favorite part was asking me what kinda hot sauce we preferred! Loved it! More...

Aisha is the best and the drinks were perfect. I'm not a club person so the music playing while enjoying food and drinks was exactly what I needed. I will be back more often.
Cheap Drinks and good food.

This place is outstanding service was quick the food is great I would definitely recommend this place.
MY NEW FAVORITE PLACE. The food, staff and service is amazing. The best soul food I've had in San Diego by far!! The menu was a little pricey but after I ate I understood why. The quality of the food was so good I couldn't get enough and the vibe of the place was really chill. The server was really sweet and told me all about the menu since it was my first time. I can't wait to go back. I will always recommend SuckerFree. More...
Great food and nice atmosphere!!!
Best southern comfort food in SD! Love the environment and location! Closed on Tuesday which is a bummer but that's what Taco Tuesdays are for right? Other than that this spot is great for families, friends, or a date. The menu is excellent, much to choose from. Definitely one of my top 5!! More...
Great soul food. I had chicken and waffles
Exxxxxxcellent service! I was very hesistant to try the "Henny Colada" that was recommended by bartender. But so glad I did because it was delicious! Perfect sweetness. The food was delicious-we tried fried chicken with several different sides. Everything was good, but our favs were the collard greens, cornbread, yams. Music playlist sealed the deal. Great food and drinks, great service, and great atmosphere! Definitely put it on your list if visiting this area. More...
FANTASTIC food. The wife had the fried green tomatoes and they were fantastic. Menu was solid. Bar drinks were great and staff friendly. Music was LOUD. Not a complaint, but be ready for it. More...
The ambiance- 5 stars. If you are into the hip hop scene on any level (old 'skool', new school) you will appreciate the great music. I loved hearing biggie and 2pac over the speakers. I had nostalgia the entire time. I also liked the way the place is decorated so be prepared to take pictures while you are there. It's very casual though, sort of reminded me of a cafe. They should consider hosting spoken word or poetry events there. The service- We didn't have to wait long, but I think it had to do with the rain that came to SD on this night and the fact that we got there after 9pm. I didn't see much waiting space, so glad we missed the rush.I cannot remember the servers name but she was so sweet. I got a little irritated when my guest and I finally figured out what we were going to order, only for our server to tell us (while taking our order) that the chef was in the middle of preparing a new menu so the items that we wanted were unavailable. Server lady- you should have told us that from jump! However, your bubbly personality made the sting less painful lol.I also enjoyed the staff, everyone seemed like family. Joking and laughing while rapping along to the music. Reminded me of a family party without the drama and drunk uncle. The food- I ordered a Shrimp Po Boy. The bread was nice and chewy, shrimp were good too but they could have replaced some of that shredded lettuce with more shrimp!! All in all, it was a good experience. More...
Delicious. Food: A+ (tasty and delicious, just perfection)Atmosphere: A+ (great music, layout + nice vibe)Service: A+ (friendly, attentive + goes beyond)Overall: good for a fun date-night, watching a game, or a night out with friends. Also great for Sunday brunch/lunch. I had the Catfish Po-Boy, which was so fresh and good. Everything seasoned to perfection and even the bread was fresh and soft. Just mm'hmm good. My friend had the mac, greens, and cornbread which they said reminded them of home (they are from Alabama).I never heard of this place (I've visited San Diego a ton but live in Chicago). I also was not recommended to go here, just googled for something different in downtown San Diego and I am so glad I ran across this location. I was so impressed I wanted to share this review, so if you're on the fence give this place a try you won't be disappointed. More...
An awesome dining experience. Came for Sunday Brunch and Mimosas and have to say I was EXTREMELY pleased. Service - A+ (attentive, sweet, going the extra mile)Food - A+ (delicious, tasty, savory, great presentation)Atmosphere - A+ (fun, light-hearted, good music and NCAA basketball on the screens; what's not to LOVE)I never knew this gem of a place was located in the heart of downtown in San Diego. It brings a new flare to downtown that is over saturated with Steakhouses, Bars and Mexican/Latin food. It is walking distance to just about everything. I did not have a referral to try this place, just googled it and decided to give it a go and I was BEYOND impressed. Will be back and encourage you to give it a go. If you enjoy Creole/Southern and savory American food, you'll LOVE this place. I had the catfish Po'Boy it was delish! More...
A friend of mine has been wanting to try this place so we dropped in on a Sat night around 8:30 it was busy but not crazy. It was about a 30 min wait but open seating at the bar. The bartenders are amazing. Very fast and friendly and great drinks. My bf had the stay woke and I normally gag at the smell of whiskey but it was a nice twist on an old fashioned. Now the food. Oh mah gawd!!!! It was so frickn good and the prices for downtown were great. The chicken was juicy and full of flavor. The Mac and cheese was awesome as well as the mashed potatoes. My girls grits and shrimp was ridiculous and we ate everything like it was going to be our last meal. It was a great experience with food that really satisfied. Definitely met and exceeded our expectations. More...
What is there not to like about this place!? Our experience was great. A coworker of mine went here and shared a pic of the ceiling and said it was not only a unique spot but a delicious one also. We parked in a parking garage and walked over to the restaurant and then ended up seeing a movie at the sugar factory theater and ended up paying $45 to park downtown. Soooo don't park in that garage lol, I suggest you look for somewhere else. We arrived shortly after opening so there was a large group and then just a couple of people in the restaurant. We were greeted immediately with great hip hop music and a friendly smile. The menu has some clever names for drinks which I always enjoy reading. I just got a lemonade which I guess is made there. It was different than I was anticipating but I still enjoyed it to the last drop. We got lemon pepper wings to start off which for whatever reason I assumed it would be a dry rub and it wasn't but nonetheless it was delicious! The quality of the chicken was second to none. I thought the ritz Mac and cheese would have like ritz crackers in it Idk if I was reading the description wrong or if my waiter took note of me being like I don't want ritz in my Mac and cheese but I do want to try the Mac and cheese. Mac and cheese was so good, collard greens delicious, chicken oh so good! I can't wait to make my way through the menu I'll be visiting San Diego ASAP. It's the soul food you crave delivered by amazing staff in a beautiful and safe location! More...
Big Smile Welcome at the door. The Bartender has high energy, she is a lot of fun, knows her job well and very personable...Ordering shots next time... Very friendly staff...cool and fun crowd also... It is the place to be... Bamboom... More...
Love the atmosphere here at Suckerfree. A friend and I had dinner here a couple weeks ago. The food we tried was very good! I had the mac n'cheese with lemon pepper wings and cornbread. Everything was delicious the wings had the right amount of flavor, the mac was cheesy like I love and the cornbread didn't need butter or honey because it was already in there. My friend had the Shrimp n grits and it was amazing. We also tried the red Kool-Aid margarita. Pretty dang good! The service was excellent but the only reason I took aware a star was because at first we tried to order the giant baked potato and something else but they didn't make those items anymore. Will definitely be back to try some other menu items and breakfast! More...
The 1st week in your brand new sports car...The 1st time you make love to your partner...The 1st resignation letter you submit your soulless now ex-employer...The 1st bite ever into Suckerfree's Fried Chicken...Gawd damn! This is the new BEST FRIED CHICKEN in San Diego!(Sorry Streetcar!) Suckerfree uses fresh chickens, which means they're effing huge like Arnold Schwaznegger in the 80s. The deep fried batter skin is thick, crispy, and sensationally seasoned to perfection. The meat is succulent and juicy like Magic Mike, but not overly oily and greasy like The Rock...eat this chicken!!! $29 for the whole tasty big bird. Yes KFC is cheaper, but that's like comparing a Ford Fiesta with a Porsche Cayman. The friendly smiling staff works hard, but they could probably use 1 or 2 extra heads during busy weekend nights. The extras are good, but rather expensive for the portion. $4 Cornbread, $10 Hushpuppies, $15 Mac N Cheese sampler, $6 spicy collard greens, $8 fried okra...all good, but I would've like to see somewhat larger portions at those prices. But that $8 Peanut butter cream cake was fatty, happy, heaven in every bite. Gotta love that decor...I'll be back! More...
I like this place ! I went for the first time yesterday. I had never even heard of this place. I think it has great potential if they market more. It's a black owned restaurant and I'm here for it. I order the chicken and waffle. My server forgot my waffle so by the time it came out I'd had already ate some of the chicken and Mac n cheese. But no worries the food was good. If you order the fry chicken make sure to order it deep fried or well cooked because there was a lot of pink. The light skin bartender was cute lol. I enjoyed the vibe to include the music and the art. I'll def come back to check out their brunch. More...

GREAT service and awesome/energetic atmosphere I was really impressed with the flavors their dishes offered Minus one star: My shrimp tasted fishy and felt rubbery & 6oz of sweet tea was $4 (no refills).
Definitely a great experience, I particularly enjoyed then seafood platter and I look forward to trying more selections on the menu in the future. The waiters/waitresses were all pleasant... definitely a great establishment and I’m certainly coming back. More...
My husband and I got married on March 3, 2019 and we used Suckerfree for catering. My husband is born and semi-raised in New Orleans so it was intentional to have soul food on our special day. Our wedding planner, Jessica Nielson @PlanPrepParty referred this company to us.Suckerfree is a new business and I believe they are still developing the catering aspect of the company. We might have been their first wedding. We worked with Todd the catering manager. He was very friendly, and made sure we had everything we wanted on our menu. Prior to our wedding, we went to the restaurant for a taste test. My husband and our kids loved the food. We practically tried everything on their menu. We thought it made sense to go with Suckerfree after loving the food. It was a little strange when working with the Catering manager, Todd and then going into the restaurant and they had no idea who we were referring to. "Todd who " "We don't have a Todd that works here " It was clear their was a disconnect between the catering side and the restaurant, although they are one company. The in-restaurant manger, Terriel was nice, but he was def confused about our catering arrangements. He tried to be accommodating as possible by sending over two free sides for us to try. Mind you we purchased the entire menu and paid for everything else. Typically taste testers allow you to taste the food because you are already in the works of purchasing a large amount in catering. This was not a big deal but something to note. We couldn't get taste sizes we basically purchased entire meals and all of the sides. If you are going in to test, be prepared to spend the money for taste testing. FYI. We had a small intimate wedding with 25 people. The price we paid for everything regarding catering was very good. We had appetizers, a buffet style dinner for our main dishes, cheffing pans, and 2 servers for the entire 4 hours of our wedding. The servers were outsourced from another company. The servers were not as professional as we would have preferred. One looked like he was in high school and this was not his specialty. While the other server was constantly asking our guest to take pictures with them. Maybe if you are considering to have this company cater your food, hire your own servers. Hiring your own servers would allow you to get the professionalism and quality your are expecting for your event.Albeit, this does not take away from the food and the customer service we received from Suckerfree and the manager Todd.We had devil eggs and wings as our appetizers. The devil eggs are very tasty with a kick of spice, but not too much. They aren't average devil eggs. They are def not bland. The wings were just right. They were not too crispy nor lightly cooked. The texture was perfect for a non-battered wing. For the main courses we had salmon, wings and brisket. The salmon was too salty. That was a bit disappointing. However, it was not over cooked. The brisket on the other hand in my opinion is a slam dunk! It is tender yet tuff as brisket should be. Very well seasoned. As sides to go along with the main course meats, we had mac-n-cheese, greens and yams were all tasty. We received lots of compliments on the food. Overall, my husband and I are very satisfied with the outcome and the food. We would recommend Suckerfree to others for their events. Please see photos below. More to come with photos of the food. Great gluten-free fried chicken, which is really hard to find. Rachel, on their staff, is so helpful. Highly recommend.
The food here was SO good. My friends and I went for brunch and I ordered the breakfast jambalaya and a side of mac and cheese. GET THE MAC AND CHEESE. I tried my friends' food and their food was so good too. The food did take a while but I'm assuming it was because our party was so big. Definitely recommend this place if you're looking for somewhere to go in downtown SD for some brunch! More...
I picked this place for my husband because he loves hot chicken. They did not disappoint. Me being born and raised in LA I loved the ambiance and music, it was a great place and great food. We were a little disappointed because three of the main dishes we ordered, they came back to tell us they were out of, so it limited us a bit, but still overall great menu. We will definitely be back. More...

Loved the atmosphere and the old school music playing.
Had a great birthday party there! Amazing atmosphere...
Very Cool resturant very creative how they used Suckafree ( reminds me of the old MTV show suckafree sundays). Appreciate the tributes to NWA 2PAC, the slight hiphop references throughout the menu. The location is prime amongest the gaslamp area stands out amongest the rest of the resturants in the area. I came in for my birthday with the family about 7 of us. We made the mistake if coming here for during mardi gras festivity didnt know Suckafree was apart of the mardi gras pub crawl so it was hecktic especially when i brought my minor daughters for lunch. Moving on like to start with the bad to good. Cons: There are no vegan or worthy vegeterian options almost everything had a meat base or cooked/marinated in meat. Disappointing for my dad. He ordered a salad that neglected alot of love was very bland, mostly just lettuce no other veggies, or any thing just a lettuce basicly cut in half. I ordered the blue plate that had under cooked baked beans very raw and not even Luke warm. In my opinion very over priced for 3 thin bologna looking slices, and a dab of coleslaw for $19 is very steep for below par plate. VERY SMALL PORTION. Think the $19 dollars was just for the plate.Double patty burger was delicious my brother enjoyed it, but the burger was no bigger than a tennis ball he finished in three bites . Pros: Fries were very good everyone at the table enjoyed it. Shrimp and grits was amazing risked my shellfish allergy to try it the portion was huge. Presentation of the dish was very elegant and made youbforget you were earing shrimp and grits. My 2 girls ordered chicken and waffles and it was phenomenal!!! Best southern chicken ive had on the west. Very juicy flavorful chicken the waffle was ok. Nothing seperate it from other waffles but was delicious paired with the chicken. My mom had chicken wings and mac & cheese. The mac&cheese was the Shit!!!(excuse me) It wasnt that velveta milky got stretch this buffet style mac & cheese. It was the REAL DEAL MAC&CHEESE!!! Sweet tea was sweet had to water it down but was good. Overall the experience and the food that was listed in the pros was very good. Dessert would of been great to try but they were out of just about everything. So will be back for the pecan pie and cheese aswell as try other things on the menu. Fairly new with more time im sure theyll be more 5 stars to come. Looking to order the chicken fried chickem next time i come in. Because there was 5 out 7 that enjoyed there meal gave this place 4 stars. More...
one of the few places I can get catfish for this transplant!
First time visit. Food was good. Staff was not customer service oriented. Had to keep asking about menu options especially after my husband said this was our first time there.
My new favorite place in San Diego, I could have eaten everything off the menu! CBGB is a total must.
We happened upon this place while on a stroll and decided to return with friends the next day. We loved all the hip hop and movie references! And the service we received from Rachel made it a 4 star experience vs the 3 stars I thought the food deserved. While many things were tasty, having grown up with incredible southern food, I felt the food was a bit of a disappointment. Amongst the delicious things were the drinks. I had the drink with Tito's, lemon and honey...can't remember the name, but once I asked them to lighten up on the honey a bit, it was bomb! The Hurricane was a favorite at our table as well. Also delicious was the catfish. Oh. My. Word. I haven't had catfish that good and fresh for a minute! The apple pie was fire. I'd go back for those things alone. The ok stuff included the fried chicken. They use good quality ingredients for sure and the flavor was good. The chicken was overall a tad dry. The okra was decent and the brisket was also ok, though like the chicken, good flavor but a tad dry. Cornbread fell in the same category. The Mac and cheese was less than meh. Y'all know how much I loooove Mac and cheese and I get super judgey about it. Love the flight concept, but flavor-wise, a huge miss. The banana pudding was a huge disappointment as well. It was like they were trying too hard tomake it fancy by putting it in a fancy glass, pudding on the bottom, vanilla wafers next and bananas on top. NOOOO!!! It's gotta allllll be mixed together, layered so the wafers get soft. Crunchy wafers in banana pudding Rookie move y'all. Another huge downer was that they didn't have any collard greens. It was 6pm on a Saturday. How the hell they gonna be out of greens already?!? So anywho, there you have it. I will definitely go back though. Can't wait to try other menu items! More...
I visited on a Friday night. It wasn't too crowded but they were about to close. For starters, I ordered the mac flight, and the frito pie. The mac flight was delicious we wish it were bigger lol! I never had a frito pie before so i cannot compare it to any one else's but I enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty flavorful. For my entree I ordered the OG REMIX which is 3 different pieces of chicken and a waffle. I was honestly a little disappointed with the chicken but I'm not sure if that had something to do with the fact they were about to close. I also ordered a side of red beans and rice. Tasted delicious and homemade I really enjoyed that dish. Service was friendly and prompt. My server that night was Giovanni and he did an excellent job. Hence the extra star.I also had ordered their drink "That loud" which is a fun an creative cocktail. I enjoyed the flavors which it tasted very refreshing. however i kind of felt like the drinks could have been a tad stronger. I had to order a few in order to feel a decent buzz. I will be back to update my review and try more items on the menu. I recommended checking them out. Fun spot with cool vibes. More...
Trial and error first round will have to check it out again
Food was delicious! I had the fried chicken sandwich with the sweet tea. Service was excellent. Waiter was friendly and attentive and very helpful with both food and drink suggestions!
The food was great! We enjoyed the fried chicken and jambalaya. John, our server, was super nice too!
Absolutely delicious food, amazing atmosphere and artwork, and dope musical selections! We were in San Diego for 6 days and made it here twice, it was that good. Next time we're in the area, we'll definitely be back! Keep up the great work! More...
The Gizzards were very good. Everything else was just average. I was hoping for more from southern Mac N Cheese. It was very plain
Finally got a chance to try this place and I was not disappointed! The fried pork chops and dirty rice were bomb. If you love Popeyes then you'll love the fried chicken here. Cornbread was moist and perfectly sweet. Loved the Kool aid margaritas! That definitely brought me back to my child hood & the red one will always be the best flavor. The Mac and cheese flight was just ok, maybe I was looking for a little more texture but still worth the try. Also my shrimp was pretty colorless and didn't look like it had any blackened seasoning on it (or any at all). Our server (also the bartender) was awesome, I can't remember his name but it was a really cool one lol. The inside is beautiful and they have dope murals on the ceiling and walls. The only problem I had was the dressing of our plates. Whoever was in the kitchen failed to put syrup and butter with our kids chicken and waffles so by the time my kids got that their waffle was almost cold. And I'm not sure if it comes with sauce for the popcorn chicken but it wasn't served with any. And our 1/2 chicken was missing a piece on the plate and I had to ask for that as well. But those things won't keep me from coming back. Definitely still enjoyed my experience and will be coming back. More...
Fun, great eats. Red cabbage rocks!
Great food, great vibes, great decor! Finding parking was not awesome but the food & service makes up for that. Highly recommend for something tasty and different.
It's my first time at Suckerfree and I was very well taken care of by Zebbie. He gave me recommendations on what to eat based on my likes and dislikes. And always made sure my drink was filled. The wait for the food was nonexistent. Everything was fresh and perfectly seasoned. The dirty rice was delicious. Will most definitely be coming back soon. More...
I returned for dinner on a Friday evening and must say the food was good, however service is still extremely slow. It was also a cold February. Ohhh, with a table right behind the host stand, it was cold. The doors need to be closed unless it's a nice day. The chicken and waffles was great, chicken seasoned very well. Collared and cornbread okay too. Overall, I'd like to return for the red velvet waffle in the brunch menu, but I hope the service gets better. More...
Excellent food, courteous service and a great unique dining experience! So glad we stopped in!
Service was really great and the quality of the food was delightful . Loved and willing to come back multiple times with more friends and family
Good Food, restaurant wasn't real busy, but it was raining out. Food was good, had collard greens, lemon pepper wings, banana pudding and my brother in law had the three pigs. Was good. Service a tad slow but not bad More...
The food was amazing and our waitress was on it for our whole meal.
great, and I do mean great customer service. the food was amazing
An awesome southern fare eatery with a hip hop vibe. Plates and drinks are playfully named after celebrity references. The Interior = Pretty awesome. The Service = Excellent. The staff is super friendly. The Food = Very good. On this trip...Fried gizzards. Yes these gizzards were excellent. Lightly fried and tender. Gator bites. Very good. Cornmeal crusted and snappy gator. Fried catfish. Excellent. Cornmeal crusted and flakey catfish. Country fried steak. This one was ok. Unfortunately, the flavors were off to me. The steak tasted gamey and the gravy was sweet. Drinks!!!Blacker the Berry Damn SmokeyGET LOUD! - This one has THC infused vodka! All in all everything was great. Would I come back? Absolutely but I'll pass on that country fried steak. More...
Fabulous food, great atmosphere and we had a wonderful waitress, Destiny!! Cocktails are one of a kind, and we really appreciate the music. Great fun with my family both times we've visited. More...
Been trying to find time to get downtown and eat here....Suckerfree didn't disappoint. I have been trying good fried pickles for the past 10 years. They nailed it! Food was good and service was amazing! Thank you guys for the experience. Can't wait to go back. More...
If you would like to go to a restaurant that serves authentic soul food then this is the place to be. Not only is the food really good but the service is excellent as well. The best part about this restaurant is the ambience and the environment. You see a lot of African culture or African-American culture that influences this place. And this is a good thing because it shows the straight authentic food. You cannot go wrong with this place and this is definitely the place to visit if you're ever in the San Diego area and you're in the mood for soul food. The best part about this restaurant however is the fact that it is black owned. More...
Great service and delicious food. We tried the Aint No Joke wings... they were NO JOKE! :) but totally tasty. I had the shrimp and grits and my hubby had the chicken and waffles. Both were great. The names of the dishes on the menu is hilarious and I LOVE all of the murals on the walls. Definitely going back and taking coworkers and friends with me next time. More...
Great eats and dope art all over I enjoyed and I’ll be back for the chicken and waffles
SuckerFree is ALWAYS a hit for me! Whenever friends and family come visit this is one place I make sure to take them. It's never really packed, although it should be, so there's never a wait. The vibe, music and old school hip-hop theme already make it a cool place to have dinner and the food puts it over the top! Being from North Carolina, southern food is very important to me! I was worried that I wouldn't find any when I moved to SD. SuckerFree isn't quite on grandmas level but it'll definitely do! I've had the chicken fried chicken, catfish, and pork chops. Along with the collard greens, dirty rice, mashed potatoes, green beans and the mac & cheese. The mac & cheese is only good with the flight, the individual side isn't the best. The green beans aren't my favorite either but everything else is always so good! More...
Went here last night. Asha was our server. She was super down to earth amazing service. Food was good large servings and flavorful. Drinks were good Ambiance was good large space with a lot of TVs and good music (hip hop). More...
First time in San Diego and I ran into this spot on a fluke. Just so happened to be super bowl Sunday. The wait wasn't long at, food came out prompt, hot, and good as I don't know what! The greens, the yams, the Mac, the chicken, the waffles, the catfish nuggets, the shakes! Bruh! I almost fell asleep in that joint I felt so good and at home! Wish they had a membership lol.. & they had some dope murals of NWA, Tupac, & Mr T. This is a must stop every time I'm in town now! More...
Just tried this restaurant and it was great. The food was good and so was the ambiance. They have a cool picture of NWA on the ceiling and play old school hip hop music. I had their chicken and waffles and my boyfriend had the catfish Po boy. Delicious. More...
Amazing place and food is so on point. Had the catfish poboy and will happily order it again. Giant with great flavor. Also the decorations of Tupac and nwa on the ceiling are awesome. There is also an inspiring quote that you'll have to go here to see for yourself! More...
Really cool space. Great music. Awesome staff. Really delicious food. Being from the south it's not often I find a place that makes food that reminds me of a Sunday at my great grandmother's. This place hits the spot. It's downtown so parking a hassle. That's the only drawback but it's big enough to deter frequent visits for us. Shrimp and grits with greens and a sweet tea. Dang. It was tasty. You know what? If we lyft or Uber then the parking is a non-issue. Problem solved. More...
Came here for lunch on a weekday with my co workers. Everyone enjoyed their food. The Mac and Cheese combo was cool, but our fave of the shrimp, crab, and bbq pork was the bbq pork. The fried chicken and waffles were delicious, with almost like a cornflake crust. It's totally different than Crack Shack, but also good. Burgers, sandwiches, salads, etc. were also very good. More...
I loved the music at suckerfree. This restaurant doesn't remind me of a soul food restaurant, but it has a high end sports bar feel. The people who work at this place are from Louisiana. The food was very diverse and filled with flavor. The bartenders are so nice I wonder if I could hangout with them later More...
Oh sweet baby Jesus! Loved it like a fat kid loves cake! I came here with several other people so I was able to try a selection of the food. The bar list is fun and I enjoyed my hurricane. I'm coming back for the cannabis infused vodka cocktail "That Loud" it's a twist on a mojito with added cucumber.Ray J is styled after an Old Fashioned.(see photo of cocktail menu) Appetizers:Gluten Free Hush Puppies - I was a little wary of the GF option, but it was delicious. probably not as hot as I would have liked them to be.Deviled Eggs - Pretty basic with a little romolaude & a chip of bacon on top. 5 eggs. Maybe the most "meh" of the meal. The Sides: (it's all about the sides at Soul Food restaurants for me)Mac & Cheese - sublime! creamy inside with a crust of cheese on top. I'm usually NOT a creamy mac lover. This changed my mind. maybe it's the crust, I don't know.... good thing I had some to take home and try to figure it out... still don't know... don't care... it's delicious (tip order two... get one to go)Greens: One of our party called them velvety. They are, yet they are NOT overcooked. The flavor is on point. a little spicy if you shy away from that. but you should at least get a sample to taste, i believe most will find it tolerable. The meat, I am not sure if it was pork or turkey... it was good and smoky! If you're veggie or vegan these aren't for you. Sweet Potatoes: Everybody has their favorite way of preparation, this is not mine. pieces of potato swimming in sweet cinnamon sauce. It wasn't bad at all, just not my favorite - can't please everybody.Entrees:Fried Chicken - a crispy delight!!! The meat is fresh not frozen and your server will tell you about how frying affects the fresh meat, no big deal, but when people see some dark red near the bone, some are alarmed. It's the blood vessels that have popped (i know, it doesn't sound pretty). The meat is brined, and THAT is evident by the juicy, flavorful, tenderness of the meat - dark & white. The coating is complete and crispy crunchy, no puddles of grease on the plate either.Grilled pork chop - not superthick, about what you'd expect - maybe 3/4 inch. It is tender as well as JUICY. So full of flavor too!Chicken and Waffles - more of that yummy chicken with a good solid crispy waffle. Not a lot to say about it or the syrup - it's the one thing I didn't taste (i'll ask about it)We had planned to have dessert, but with all the food we had, it was impossible - next time, sides only and DESSERT!!!The service was superb. Our server was Asha, and she took the orders by memory and each order was perfect. Made great recommendations and was available whenever we needed her. She was an A+I WILL definitely be coming back. If you are in San Diego area and are even a LITTLE bit fond of southern food, GO HERE! More...
Loved the food and music was great
When I saw the name of the restaurant, I knew that it was something that I wanted to try. Especially since it was a 3 minute walk from my resort. The chicken and waffles didn't disappoint and the BlackBerry cocktail was awesome. I loved the decor with the exception of that huge NOLa Saints flag. I'm an Atlanta Falcons fan. Lol...I will definitely go again the next time in San Diego. More...
My girlfriends and I decided to have brunch here and I’m glad we did. I loved the ambiance and the drinks and food exceeded my expectations. Will definitely be back again for round 2. More...
The best mac and cheese I have ever had.... ever! All the food was great and the service was great. Family friend restaurant before 8 on weekends, after 8 it's more of a bar feel but still pretty laid back. Music a little loud but it was great music so made it easier to deal with. You'll spend about $30-$40 per person but the portions are large and worth every penny More...
This place is fantastic!!!!! It was Amazing seeing some folks from Louisiana doing big things out in San Diego. The food was amazing and the drinks are fantastic!! This is true Southern Cuisine!!!
Came here for dinner before a show at the Balboa. My group has just recently returned from a trip to New Orleans and we wanted some Southern food to reminisce on our trip. We all loved our food. I got the catfish po boy and it was HUGE. A couple of my friends got the chicken and waffles and they loved the chicken. My one friend said it was the best fried chicken he's ever had. The staff was friendly and attentive. The music was good and there were lots of tvs. Definitely want to go back and try their brunch. More...
If the music blaring out the front door doesn't grab your attention the ode to hip hop decor and delicious food will. Not to mention the random song alongs of patrons favorite songs. First time visiting and trying to figure out how I've never been to this amazing place. The staff were friendly and welcoming, literally felt like family. Our waitress (can't remember her name) was so attentive and gave great suggestions. We had the Mac and cheese trio and shared the seafood platter. WE ATE EVERY BITE. Also I'm gluten free and the entire menu is with the ingredients being cornmeal and not white flour. Whether with friends, family or date night, Suckerfree will ensure you have a memorable experience. More...

Fun afternoon of football, good drink selection, great service, and creative soul food menu. Tupac on the wall and NWA on the ceiling. Love it!
My sister is visiting from out of state and we came here because I was craving chicken and waffles. I am a fan of Roscoes but didnt want to make the drive today. We ordered the fried green tomatoes and the chicken and waffles. Delicious! We had never had fried green tomatoes before and they were so flavorful. The chicken wings were plump and fried to perfection. The Belgium waffles were fluffy and perfectly prepared. The staff was very attentive and checked in numerous times with us. I will definitely be back with my husband. There is so much more to try...can't wait to return. More...

I had the fried chicken, Mac n cheese, and yams. Everything was amazing and such huge portions. Well seasoned the restaurant atmosphere is also super cute.
Their Food was on point. From the Po' Boy to the Mac'n Cheese. Fresh and flavorful defined every plate up holding a strong tradition of Southern comfort food
Amazing food, amazing people, and the best place to watch the saints in San Diego catch me here every Sunday!
I played it safe because I wasn't SUPER hungry! However, I enjoyed the fried chicken and the waffle was basic. I also tried the jerk wings which were delicious! They wrote perfect but a bit pricy. Turned out to be worth it! This places menu is massive and creative, I wish I had the appetite to try more of the menu options. The service was fabulous! Our waitress was attentive and very kind. The atmosphere is cool and laid back. I would love to see this place packed out! They have so much to offer in the Gaslamp Quarter. Would recommend this place if visiting SD or if you're a local looking for gold southern food. More...
Food is always on point staff is awesome. Bar manager Asia is the best.
I'm so happy to finally have gluten free fried chicken in San Diego . This place is amazing, The gluten free options are amazing, the customer is amazing, it just makes me smile when I have a great overall experience with amazing food and service. The koolaid margarita is fantastic! More...
My Aunt brought me here for the first time and I must say I might move back to San Diego to taste this food everyday. The vibe is amazing! Dope music and dope food! Every taste was seasoned and sensational. Shout out to Zebbie who was attentive to my every need ! Will return for sure! More...
Loved the ambiance, the music and decor. It was my first time and I'll definitely be back. I ordered the breakfast mac and three wings. The Breakfast Mac was great! The wings we average. I may have messed them up by asking them to make them hot. They ended up being spicy with no flavor. So I'll have to order them as they come to truly judge them. More...
Love it! Best meatloaf and TV dinner off the menu!
Hands down the BEST southern food I've EVER HAD had in CA. Will absolutely come back when in town again.
o. my. g. the best fried green tomatoes we ever had. the best Mac n cheese we ever had. incredible gator. the food was way, way better than good. that was amazing. I'm actually angry at all the other restaurants we have eaten at this trip for not being this good. More...
So this is my second time here (it has been over 7 months since my last visit)This place definitely has improved as far as service and food is concerned Today my fiancé and I just ordered some side and appetizers The green beans were perfect for my taste (Sautéed to perfection, the perfect amount of seasoning and not over oily)The salmon croquettes was good but I would have preferred them a little more well down but they did taste goodMy fiancé ordered the gator bites. They looked good and crispy and she said they were great As for the Mac n cheese. What I didn't care for is the hint of a different cheese that I just don't prefer in my Mac n cheese. Tasted like a jalapeño cheese. (Just not for me) but it was cheesy Definitely worth the second try More...
The food is great. Service? Meh.
I finally was able to try this place with my friend after I saw a video on Facebook with their Kool-Aid drink. I wasn't able to get the Kool-Aid drink, mostly because I was super hungry. But the food did NOT disappoint. The mac and cheese plates were super good, the bbq one in particular was amazing. We had the brisket plate as well, it was decent, but not the best I've had. Still Worth going back to and trying their other food. More...
Absolutely loved this restaurant! The food was amazing and the service was impeccable. There was no sign in front of the restaurant so it may be a little hard to find if you're not familiar with the area!
Authentic Southern Soul food. Outstanding brunch items, unique drink menu and great service. The food reminded of food my family would enjoy back in Texas. It was so good, I ate there three times in 24 hours. My wife and I ordered different things each time and shared everything, so we had a chance to taste a lot of food. We enjoyed everything we had.We tried the chicken and waffle. The fried chicken was amazing and the Belgium waffle was nice. They also offer a traditional waffle and Red velvet as well. Since it was brunch, we also got the Rubik's Cube combo with soft scrambled eggs, bacon and cheese grits (white cheese) which was perfect. The grits are preseasoned with salt, pepper and butter. If you are the type that likes sugar in your grits, you may not like these and I don't know you. More...
Very good & filling food.
Food very good along with Fantastic Service
Ive been here about three times now. The food is delicious. I've only had the brunch menu. The chicken and waffles is my go to, but I've also had the shrimp n grits (amazing) and the catfish! Everything we had was good
The food is delicious except for the grits which was horrible. The big Jake special was hot and tasty and a good value for the money.
amazing!!! very good quality food, good service. I can see if you're from the south you are going to have high expectations but i'm not so my opinion may not have merit. would go again in a hear beat.
Good Food ( live atmosphere)
Went in while on vacation and I am retired chef from Louisiana and I know good eat. Since I get them 2 thumbs up and I going be back because I know good eats.

WOW... it's the real deal! Seriously southern and some Louisiana dishes too! We started with Fried Green Tomatoes and Blackened Caesar Salad, followed by Chicken Fried Chicken with Mashed Potatoes, Sausage Gravy, and Green Beans. Generous portions, perfectly prepared. Dessert was Banana Pudding... indescribable! Nice selection of local beers with tasting options. Our server, Raquel, was outstanding...friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. Definitely worth the drive to Gaslamp! More...
