Based on the existing layout of your house the most important element to get right is the location of the new stair leading up to the loft. This will have a big impact on the rooms on the first floor and how you will be able to use the loft in the future.
Maximising existing space is of the essence in most houses.
Once these key elements have been decided on the exact size and position of the dormer will be dictated by your desired internal layout and any existing planning constraints. The rest, i.e. finishes, fixings and furniture are the fun bit and only limited by your imagination... and perhaps your budget..
