We had a lovely dinner at Rat's on a Friday evening. The drinks were well-made and the pour was generous. The homemade bread was amazing. Some of the items we ordered could have used a bit more flavor. The escargot were floating in butter, but desperately needed garlic or flavor of any kind, though the Frisee Salad was generously portioned and delicious. The duck breast was a perfectly cooked medium rare, but could have used a bit more flavor, the farro and carrots accompaniments were wonderful. The pork schnitzel was again lacking in flavor and a overcooked and hard to cut; the accompaniments were perfect. The macaroni and cheese came out hot bubbly and delicious, but could have done with a bit less white pepper for my taste. Service was on the slow side. There was a long wait between our appetizers and our meals; our dining experience with appetizers and entrees, no dessert, was about 2 hours.The waitstaff was warm and appropriately attentive; the ambiance was elegant, rustic and unique. We had a noisy table of eight next to us, but that is not the fault of Rat's, and for the most part we were able to tune them out and enjoy our experience. More...

I love coming to Rats. Even when we come for just a simple evening out they make us feel like it's always so special. Service is always spot on, friendly and warm. Food is delicious, especially the Coq au Vin. I read a review that said this dish was not good. Well, I've been to France as well and I can verify that this dish is perfectly prepared by Rats. Rats Restaurant is an experience, both for the dining and the gratification of longing for beauty. We visited during the busy holiday season, yet our table insured a sense of privacy and a quieter atmosphere. Our menu choices included satisfying offerings for a gluten free guest and a vegetarian (potato leek ravioli). Both were enjoyed. The meat eater devoured the wonderful and perfectly prepared hamburger. The fries are always delicious. The dining experience was excellent in regards to food and service. Beautiful decor inside, we had a nice evening with friends. However, few things to point out. Parking was difficult. We had to park on the service road. The walk way was extremely poorly lit. The bushes are very overgrown and "attacked" us as we tried to navigate the path. The exterior of facility is very interesting, having experienced in the daytime for an event. You could barely see where going. It holiday time but you missed the opportunity to create a festive exterior, illuminating the architecture and interior was limited to one Christmas tree. More...

We have dined a number of times at Rats Restaurant and always enjoyed the ambiance and food. I took my wife to the Sunday Brunch yesterday for her birthday. While the attentive service was outstanding and of course the atmosphere was charming we both felt the price was high for the amount and variety of food. While the food they had excellent it didn’t come up to our expectations on the variety we would have expected for that price in comparison to what we have experienced in the past at other high priced brunches. Our first dining experience at Rat’s and it was exceptional. We were in a rush because had to be at a concert at the Museum. Our waiter alerted the kitchen and our food was delivered to the table in a flash. The braised short ribs were melt in your mouth. Potatoes, carrots and brussel sprouts were all done to perfection. Beautiful venue, great food, outstanding service- what more can you ask for. We enjoyed the salade verte, so fresh it tasted like it just came from the garden; escargots delightfully flavored and served sans shells; coq au vin which the chef deboned so my husband could easily eat (he is blind) and a very generous serving of duck breast with a light, sweet cherry sauce. All perfectly paired with GFS wines and of course, we can’t forget the delicious popovers! We completed our dinner with a refreshing apricot lime sorbet and after dinner drink. A step back in time. When we walked through the door we were no longer in New Jersey. Food, Service and ambiance exceeded our expectations. We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary and wanted a very special meal and we weren’t disappointed. My wife had never been there and needless to say she will visit again...soon. Escargot, French Onion soup, followed by potato and leek ravioli and Croque Madame. Each course was delicious. Overall experience was a 9. The reason I’m not giving it a 10 is, we didn’t get to walk the Grounds for Sculpture because it was raining. A definite must visit. Our evening was a very delayed birthday celebration. We had been to Grounds for Sculpture several times but never made it to Rats. We totally enjoyed our experience. The food was excellent and our server was outstanding. Fortunately for us, we had an early (5:30) reservation; our server was able to take the time and explain the art in the room we were dining in.
