We recently hired Chris Kitterman of Stadt Architecture to renovate our studio apartment in New York City and couldn’t be happier with the result!
Chris shepherded us through all the important, yet frustrating, aspects of a gut renovation in the city with patience, determination, wit and clarity. From concept meetings (often via Skype as we aren’t in town full time) that respected our budget, to carefully choosing and supervising a contractor, through dealing with our charming co-op building manager and super, and in the end giving a side eye to some of our more questionable decorating choices, he was always professional, knowledgeable, thorough, well prepared, encouraging, conscientious and an excellent communicator.
His own vision for the space was brilliant but he also welcomed a few of our ideas, some well-developed and others, shall we kindly say, less so and created an amazing functional and beautiful environment. And it’s not just us and our friends and family who are impressed: Dwell Summer 2018 features the project and Interior Design Magazine’s Instagram lit up!
But, most of all, we are happiest that Chris delivered big time on the most crucial aspect of our brief to him. And that is, that beyond all the technical aspects of the renovation process, at the end of day we wanted a place to call home. He took our meh studio and turned it into a welcoming, tranquil, gorgeously minimalist one bedroom apartment that we can’t wait to come home to!
And the crazy thing is, we’re looking forward to a time in the hopefully not-too-distant future when we can do it all over again! In the meantime, we can heartily recommend Chris and Stadt Architecture for your professional design needs.

I hired Chris Kitterman / Stadt Architecture to gut renovate my classically laid out “L” shaped alcove studio, which had two distinct ceiling heights as existing conditions—a 12’ ceiling area conventionally used as the sleeping alcove and an 8’-6” ceiling area used for other functions.
He documented my design ideas as well as presented alternatives unrealized to me. Ultimately, I went with one of his proposed alternatives and could not be happier. He took an awkward “bowling alley” space and completely transformed it into a much more open, livable, inviting space, maximizing the utility of every square inch—a necessity in NYC!
From the conception of this project, Chris provided a clear, concise roadmap for the process, which he then followed in execution. The project evolved from concept to design development; ultimately construction drawings were developed. Once the construction drawings were developed, Chris issued construction packages to potential contractors for bidding and evaluated the returned contractor proposals. He also assisted with submittals to my coop board, and then NYC DoB. Because of the thoroughness of the construction documents, I am pleased to say my project only had three change orders--two at my request, which were known and approved before construction began. Chris monitored construction of the project through to completion.
End result, my renovated studio floor plan takes advantage of the high ceiling area, previously used for the sleeping alcove, and repurposed the area for a new spacious living area. Additionally, the openness of the renovated studio allows for a large dining table, which comfortably seat 8 persons and which would have been impossible in the space pre-renovation.
Post-renovation, entertaining guests in my apt is no longer uncomfortable, but pleasurable. I enjoyed working with Chris and will definitely use Stadt Architecture for future projects--large or small

I hired Stadt to do a near full gut renovation of my Upper Westside apartment. The result was stunning and award winning. Stadt drew up three designs to provide me with options and allow me to visualize the end result . It was my first renovation project and a significant investment on my part, and I was a bit nervous. Stadt put me at ease with its professionalism and patience. I never felt “good enough” was part of its vocabulary. Stadt was extremely conscientious about getting every detail just right. The end result feels very zen and expansive with its clean lines and interplay of cool white walls and warm dark wood. Lots of clever design features such as an automatic privacy shade, built in platform bed with nightstands, wall mounted sink and toilet, and more. I have received numerous compliments, not to mention inclusion in Dwell Magazine. I could not be more pleased. The transformation of the space is striking. Highly recommend Stadt Architecture.
