One of the best things is seeing our client's eyes light up when they "get it." For many clients who hire sub-standard accountants, they are handed a tax bill and told to pay it each year. They never understand how it is made up or calculated and many believe that this is just how things are.

We don't expect our clients to be accounting or tax experts, that's our job. But we do think that it's important for us to help them to understand things, such as their financial statements and tax bill, in plain English. After all, their financial situation has a huge impact on their quality of life. Seeing our clients prosper as a result of good financial and tax advice is probably the most satisfying part of the job.

Luke Stevens, founder of Squared Up Accountants began life in a small accountancy practice based in South Wales. Within 2 years, he had the opportunity to move to a Top 100 firm in Cardiff, where he completed his exams and became a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. He remained at this practice for 6 years as a Senior Accountant.

During this time, Luke won an employee excellence award as a recognition of the quality work that he produced and first class service that he provided to clients. However, whilst he thoroughly enjoyed working practice, he couldn't help but notice there were areas in which improvements could be made, and decided to set out to provide great practice-standard service without the old-school paper pushing or hourly billing.

He realised that there is more to providing accounting services than records in, tax returns out. With the time pressure that often comes with being in a larger practice, it can often be difficult to really add value to the services provided.

For example, is the client making the most of all of the things that they are allowed to claim on their returns? Are they using the best accounting software for their specific business? What are there future plans and are they making financial decisions that will help to facilitate these? There was a huge advisory opportunity to be taken, inspiring Luke to build a business that covers the basics but builds in these value added ideas.
