Q&As

A great photograph has very little to do with the camera you use or how technically balanced, processed or presented it is. A great photograph will produce an emotion as it places the observer in a moment in time. It will tell some kind of story, whether that is seen in the features of a portrait subject, the desirability of particular product or the lifestyle associated to a particular property. The secret to taking a great photograph is 'seeing' the reaction it will instil in the viewer.

The questions I ask clients varies dependant on what I am being asked to do. For a portrait, it is important to know about the family or job role or clients who will see the photographs and if there is something important which needs capturing. For a wedding photography it is more important to understand what is most important to them about the day and what they want the wedding to be like which helps with the style of photographs to be produced. The photograph of a product or building will need to instil a desire or reaction so it is important to understand what result the client is aiming to achieve.

The people I meet. No two people are the same, every portrait, wedding, property, product has a story, a passion somewhere involved and uncovering that and weaving it into an image is the best part of the job.

Having your own photographic business means that you are not conforming to an employers timescale, image, style or tradition; it means that the photographs are all about the client.
