I've been training at the South Wimbledon dojo for over a year and have really enjoyed my experience there. There is a very welcoming atmosphere in the class, and the lessons are very active and engaging. When I first joined this dojo, I had no prior experience of martial arts training so I found the structure and general support very helpful. Additionally, I am completing the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award with Shorinji Kempo as my physical activity which I am doing alongside my sixth form studies. More...

This is a great dojo to train in. The location is good being near a tube station and 93 bus route. If you have an interest in Shorinji Kempo, japanese Budo or just martial arts I would advise you to visit this training session. Dojo has a friendly atmosphere.

I tried Shorinji Kempo in South Wimbledon not knowing anything about it. The same evening I decided to joined the club. It is a great way to keep fit, learn new skills, meet new people, gain confidence with self defence techniques. The teachers are very knowledgeable, helpful and inspiring, the atmosphere -friendly and welcoming. I wish I discovered it earlier! More...

A great sport, and an excellent place to learn it! Shorinji Kempo is a Japanese martial arts that—while perhaps less well known than Karate, Judo and some others—is highly effective (no matter what your size and strength is) and very ethical at the same time. It blends thrusts and kicks with grappling techniques, foot movement, controlled falls etc. Each class combines a solid workout (prepare to sweat!) with a mix of those techniques, as well as elements of the philosophy and mindfulness. The South Wimbledon dojo is a true gem for Shorinji Kempo. Sensei Paul and his team do an amazing job in patiently teaching all kenshi of different belts, and the relaxed atmosphere in class helps you make a whole bunch of new friends quickly: Once you have come for a few times, everybody knows you by name, and many of the kenshi become good friends also outside class. One thing that really strikes me is the non-commercial nature of this sport: While many (most?) sports are run on a profit-basis, Shorinji Kempo seems to be taught for purely altruistic reasons. The fees will barely cover the costs for the rent, the equipment etc. The initial workouts alone are easily on par with gym classes that would cost you more than an entire 2h Kempo class! Really refreshing to see that such things still exist in London. More...

I've been going to another dojo for a while before coming here, and I love shorinji kempo so I decided to come train at this dojo in addition to the one nearby. I was nervous at first going to a new place on the other side of London, but I felt at home and like a part of the group in no time. The instructor and the students are both helpful and caring people which makes it a good learning environment. If you're wondering about trying a new martial art, or trying out this specific dojo, you should go for it and try it out. The instructors are very generous with their time, and are careful to explain the basic mechanics of each technique to newcomers. Students get a grounding in basic Zen mind training, strikes, blocks, takedowns, pins, and releases. The art itself may be formidable, but the setting in which it's taught is relaxed and accommodating. And, as it's been pointed out elsewhere, the space has an excellent array of equipment: focus mitts, heavy bags, a striking dummy, and padded floors. A good place to embark on a regimen for increased fitness, quiet self-confidence, and mental de-cluttering . . . More...
