My niece had an amazing haircut with a student. I brought her back a few weeks later to get a blow dry and it was only $18. My friends have gone to the school and graduated. I took the MAC makeup certification course wig Hair Sarah, and i have to say, she’s an amazing teacher. She doesn’t only demonstrate the looks and skills, but she gets Be is the opportunity to practice on each other while she comes around to help each student. I usually go here because it's super cheap and everyone is super talented. Don't let the fact that students are cutting your hair scare you. I honestly prefer going here because of how old the stylists are because I feel they are better able to understand the look or style I am going for.

UPDATE: I have had one bad experience here. And it was mostly due to the fact that the girl cutting my hair was basically telling me that she didn't really even want to be a stylist or pass her test. I should have just said something straight out to her or the manager when it happened because it was really unprofessional. But that was the only time I ever felt like the product and service was compromised. More...

I visited the Sono Academy for the first time a few weeks ago and had my hair colored and highlighted by Marissa Buscemi. I would like to commend Marissa for her incredible professionalism, maturity and outstanding talent . I have a lot of hair and it takes hours to do the foils for highlights which I can imagine is exhausting for any colorist. Marissa was incredibly cheerful and devoted throughout the whole process. The color came out amazing, exactly as the photo I brought to show Marissa. As a fashion industry executive, I have had my hair colored by the top 'celebrity' colorists in New York, and I would compare Marissa's talent to those colorists, even at this stage in her career. I went back this past week for a Keratin treatment with Marissa and experienced the same level of professionalism and expertise. This place is a treasure. I love this place !The staff is super friendly and the students are conscientious and very skilled! Cassandra is fabulous and the front desk staff. I highly recommend this place. The color and style -and highlights are much better than many high priced salons in the area . The prices are just fabulous . Just plan to spend extra time as students work on you but they are all wonderful and skilled!I can't say enough positive things . I wish they were open longer and later hours and open on Sundays ! The Sono Academy make up course has a high level of professionalism in the quality of their instructors. Dina and Sarah are astounding teachers with clear, conceptual teaching methods. I have experienced and witnessed each instructor work demonstrate their unrestrained patience for their students, working with us until full comprehension of the material is reached. As well as their instructors, Sono Academy uses high quality makeup to teach the course. In the beginning of the class everyone receives a Mac makeup kit. If you really want to know how the true experience at Sono Academy is....please read. A very good friend of mine from work recommended Kathy at the academy. I was going to another salon in Stamford and thought I would save myself some money so I decided to look into the academy. I have a long bob and I was extremely nervous to change places, especially considering I used to drive back home to Long Island to get my hair done. After talking to my friend at work she raved about Kathy and told me I wouldn't regret going. When I first walked into the Salon in the back it was a bit overwhelming with a lot of people and little direction but after about 5 minutes I figured out what I needed to do. I went up to the front desk to find no one there but after a few the receptionist had returned and asked me to sign the waiver. It would make most extremely nervous to sign this but the academy has to cover themselves for liability reasons. I met Kathy who is very friendly, warm and has great style. You would never know her age because she looks incredible. I went into my little nervous rant about my hair but she was very quick to make me feel sooo much better. She used to have a haircut like mine and one of the educators Nick (who was there when I went) used to cut her hair. I made sure when making my appointment that Nick was available just in case. My hair is super short and stacked in the back and quite long in the front so I didn't want to mess around. Kathy began to cut my hair and would call Nick over every once in a while if she didn't feel comfortable. I will agree with some of the other reviewers that you should prepare to be at the salon a while but once again it was so worth it. Kathy continued to cut my hair with little supervision and then blew it out. After the blow dry she painted a few highlights on, I have an ombre kind of effect going on. My whole head isn't highlighted but only wanted a few accent pieces. If you are going for color make sure to ask for Elysse. She is AMAZING!! She is also a student but knew exactly what I wanted and wasn't pushy at all. She made sure to check in from time to time but Kathy was the one who did most of my color. After around 30 minutes I was washed and then blow dry'd again and then both girls took a look at the final cut and shaped it some more. Both Kathy and Elysse were meticulous and didn't leave one end standing out. I knew I was in good hands and felt the most comfortable. If I had to measure my nervousness on a scale from 1 to 10 I'd say I was at an 8. Don't be mislead by some of the negative reviews here. Take my word for it and go to see Kathy and Elysse, you won't be disappointed. I will definitely be back. Best of all.....For a haircut, blowout, and a few highlights....you'll never guess.....I paid $62.....You won't come close to that in Stamford. More...

I have recently completed the makeup artistry course at Sono Academy and I am amazed at the amount of knowledge I was able to obtain in such a short time. I am so happy I chose Sono Academy because the level of care and professionalism is evident in the course material, the instructors and the quality of the makeup kit. Sarah and Dina are terrific instructors who tag team important topics within the wonderful world of makeup. When I received my kit on the first day, I was completely overwhelmed. I had little to no idea on how to use any of the items inside but Sarah and Dina were so patient in their teachings. They have demonstrated such patience for their students in the sense that they will work with them on an individual basis until they are able to grasp the materials/tasks/techniques. Great deal for a highlight. First time I've gotten my hair colored/lightened and it came out gorgeous! The students are supervised closely, behave courteous and professional. Went on the recommendation of 2 of my friends, and glad I did! For $20 I got a shampoo, excellent cut, and blow dry. You really can't beat that! My stylist was supervised almost the whole time which made me feel very at ease, and I am so happy with how my cut turned out. The only reason I docked one star is that it didn't feel totally professional the whole time--like getting a little water on my face during the shampoo, and having side conversations with other stylists during my cut. But all in all very satisfied with my experience here!The salon is really nice and feels very upscale! I will definitely be going back for my next cut! More...

Love it. Plan on going back. The staff/students are so friendly, they really listen to you, and they want to get it absolutely right. Besides, I loved hearing the teacher/supervisor talk to my stylist, because I actually learned things about my hair that I might not have found out otherwise.Doesn't hurt that it is super cheap for a really great cut.That said, my one complaint is that it took for.ev.er. I was just getting a trim with some long layers and bangs cleaned up, and was there for almost two hours. TWO HOURS. No color, no highlighting, not changing the whole construct of my hair. But it was a process of making a cut, waiting for the teacher to inspect, going further, waiting again. I mean, my girl was thorough (you better be when you have me remaining stationary for such a period of time), but it did get a little tedious after a while. However, I would gladly stay just as long, again, if it meant I got the same quality cut and service. In fact... I plan on calling this week for another appointment. More...

Really happy with my haircut at Sono Academy! I recommend Dana, she is very attentive. The other stylists/students were great too from what I could see. $18 for a haircut and blow dry! This review is about getting a haircut, I don't know anything about the quality of the schooling there.They take walk in haircuts here to use as guinea pigs to let their students learn, but the haircuts I've gotten here are far and away better than anywhere else in the area. The students care, and want to do well so it does take a little more time, but they are very thorough. After they finish one of the teachers comes to inspect their job, and suggest any changes. I've always been really happy with the results. Much better haircut for around $13 compared to $40+ at the salon  on Washington St.I see lots of women in here getting color, etc so I would say check it out if you need something simple done.
