Smart & Simple Home Improvements (Matthew) built the pergola in the garden which allows me to do my training outdoors. His craftsmanship and skills are impeccable. I was impressed with the accuracy and ingenuity he planned and built this from a concept I had in mind. We recently had some bespoke decking installed by Matthew from Smart & Simple Home Improvements and were VERY happy with the service provided. He helped by suggesting some design ideas and options to maximise the space we had available. The end product we received was very professionally finished and the construction was incredibly strong and sturdy. Matthew is an honest and trustworthy individual who always turns up as promised and if he says he will call at a certain time, this was always fulfilled. I just love having breakfast in the sun on our new deck . Would highly recommend this service - this is how trades people should all operate...! More...

What do you love most about your job?
What I love most about my job is the freedom to be able to help people achieve what they either cannot do themselves, or do not have the time to. Working in property is a passion and much like restoring an old car I would imagine, it gives a great sense of achievement transforming something that may be a little old and dated and giving it a fresh new look. Also, get to meet and help all types of new people is an added bonus (as long as they make good tea...!).
What inspired you to start your own business?
There were several factors that inspired me to setup this business. Previously, I worked in Financial Services for approximately 15 years (including a stint working with complaint resolution) where I learned the importance of Customer Service and how it should be delivered. However, when working for large organisations, it's you are only just a representative of that entity with minimal opportunity to impact customers yourself. Working in this business, it gives the opportunity to really make a difference to people and their homes by helping them do what they either are unable to or do not have the time to.
In addition, when needing trades people ourselves for personal jobs at home, the level of service received was awful, for example, not returning calls, not calling when late, not turning up, to name but a few of the issues we experienced - you wouldn't think it would be so hard to find someone who you want to pay money to! I'm not looking to change the world but this business allows me to deliver customer service how it should be and keep customer's informed as and when they should be.
There is also not much satisfaction derived from working in Financial Services, compared to how satisfying it is to help someone transform their home or garden. To take a wasted space and build a lovely new relaxation area deck, to take a boring standard wall and make it a unique feature or bringing a room alive with a brand stylish new wood floor is incredibly satisfying.
