I manage operations at CMAV, an audiovisual production and equipment rental company. We purchased print and digital ad space in our local business journal to promote a winter sale. Wanting to make the most of our investment, we hired smallnormous to help dial in our strategy and come up with a brilliant execution. Our goal was to increase visibility and business during our slow season. We wanted to have an on-brand, cohesive look and feel to our ads across multiple channels. I had vetted over 100 local marketing firms via Yelp and Google, looking for a particular level of quality. I was surprised to read how focused they were on helping small businesses. I was sure that they'd be out of my price range. After a very generous free strategy session and fully understanding our needs, they gave a proposal for performing each need piecemeal -- the kind of bites my budget needs. We prioritized a new print ad, two digital ads, and on their wise suggestion, a landing page so that ad space could be conserved and greater detail could be provided on the landing page. Jennifer is the copywriter and Eric graphic design. Both are top-notch strategists and complemented each other well. The work product produced was much better quality than what we had before, which was the first success. Time will tell, but I think this campaign will be more effective than our marketing in the past, as they were able to dig to the emotional driver behind the promotion and develop copy and imagery to support it. They selected just the right photography and while the ad has a distinctive feel, it's certainly in line without already developed brand. That takes serious skill!Smallnormous is exactly who they present to be -- high-level marketers affordable for the small business. There are lots of graphic designers out there touting branding experience. Developing a logo for a friend is not the same as being seriously educated in branding and marketing. These folks are the real deal. I will use them for as long as they'll have us! More...

Working with Jennifer & Eric at smallnormous was an absolute pleasure! They took on the project of naming my business, designing a logo, and creating my website, with ease, thoughtfulness, and flair. What seemed to me an overwhelming project, they handled beautifully and I am the proud owner of the most beautiful and stunning business identity I could have imagined. They also helped me, and continue to work with me, on marketing and are adept at strategy. Jennifer & Eric are experts at what they do and I can't recommend them enough - I already have, several times over! More...

Smallnormous was absolutely skilled and easy to work with. They helped us consolidate 25 pages of content into an engaging and fun 3 page site, helped us work with a third party web platform host to seamlessly switch our domain, and had almost instantaneous response time with questions and went over and above to troubleshoot and consult. Highly recommend them - Association For Applied And Therapeutic Humor is so pleased to have had such great success with this company! More...

As a soloprenuer, creative, and control freak I was extremely hesitant about hiring someone to design my website. I had a hard time articulating exactly what I wanted my site to be like, as it was all in my head. Jennifer did an amazing job helping me organize & edit the written copy for my site so it was descriptive, concise, yet still in my voice. Eric designed the layout of the site itself and together they were able to create my website to tell more of a story of who I am & what I provide. I was also very thankful that they were able to work with me to create a site that fit within my financial budget. Having just met them at a corporate event, the best part about working with them was the level of trust I felt. They listened to me even when I couldn't articulate exactly what I needed and they were extremely flexible as I changed my mind or had small adjustments I wanted to make. Not only do I recommend them with the highest level of confidence possible, I plan to hire them again for more work in the future. Also, they're funny people which is non-negotiable for me. More...

smallnormous delivered ENORMOUS work for us! We're a non-profit that fundraises for pediatric cancer, and we needed to re-brand our outdated logo that was creating confusion about what we focus on. We wanted a logo that was timeless and clean, but represented what we do without being as explicit as a cancer ribbon. Eric and Jennifer were a dream team to work with. They listened carefully to our likes and dislikes, did their own research to better understand the industry and see how similar causes represented their purpose, and came up with a variety of ideas for us to choose from that represented our organization. We finally narrowed it down to our favorite, and they worked with us to fine-tune it until it was perfect! We are so so happy with our new logo, and I would HIGHLY recommend smallnormous for your branding needs. They do it all – branding, marketing, design, websites, social, etc. HUGE thank you to Eric and Jennifer at smallnormous! More...

smallnormous is an enormous partner in the gamut of marketing communications. Recently, Jennifer and Eric worked with me and my firm to overhaul our branding and website. Their design thinking is incomparable on both the creative and copy side. I would have been thrilled just by this, but their expertise extends far beyond this. They were each prepared to challenge my thinking in a very good way. The result was far better than I could have expected. Moreover they were an absolute joy to work with: reliable, timely, comprehensive and efficient with my time. I highly recommend smallnormous! More...

Smallnormous is huge in what they offered our small business. Eric and Jennifer where absolutely wonderful to work with, and made great effort to understand our near by competitors and what they offered when we sat down together for the first time. Their knowledge went so much deeper than creating a website for us. They genuinely got to know us our business and what vision we could share with them on our journey to create a website. The questions they posed and examples they had us look at, helped us grow in understanding what and who we are as a business as well. Eric and Jennifer go far beyond the specifics of what you might be paying them for. I know it did for us. We couldn't have dreamed of a better website for our business than smallnormous produced for us, along with social media integration and great photography. Eric and Jennifer made something that I don't enjoy or understand an exciting journey. Bottom line here is they knew better what we needed in a website, social media campaign, and how to present our brand than we could have ever come up with. If you have a business and want it to take it to another level or bring what you have to the forefront of peoples minds, call smallnormous. In the short time our website has gone live and social media been integrated our business has increased by 5% with new clients and sales. Estela salon of Sonoma absolutely recommends and will use no other than smallnormous for our business needs. You will not be disappointed. More...

I've been extraordinarily impressed by my experience with Eric von Pingle and smallnormous. I've worked with a number of web designers, and he is of a different order of magnitude. Great design sense, imagination, and technological sophistication. And just as important, he responds quickly, is unfailingly pleasant, and in every respect is a joy to work with. I can't recommend him highly enough.

Q&As

Clean, visually appealing design. Clear, jargon-free copy. Intuitive navigation that makes information easy to find. And of course, it goes without saying that every website must be mobile friendly (must work across all devices—mobile and desktop)! A website should walk potential customers through what you have to offer and why they should choose your business, quickly and easily. A great website loads fast and is search-engine friendly to help maximize your online presence and visibility.

Your website is your most important marketing tool. In today’s digital-first world, where 89% of adults are online in the US, it’s absolutely critical for a business to have a solid website. Your website is now your storefront, and your potential customers are knocking at your door. If you don’t have a website—or have one that’s outdated and confusing—you’re automatically losing a large share of interested customers.

But just having a website isn’t enough. When 75% of consumers judge a business’s credibility from their website design, how your site looks and feels is critical for owning your brand and growing your customer base.

Here at Smallnormous, we can help. Founded by two advertising agency veterans, we’re a small marketing consultancy focused on helping small businesses and start-ups get up and running with website and marketing solutions they can afford.

We listen first, taking a personal approach to learning your business. Here are some typical questions we ask our clients at the start of any project:

• Do you have a 30-second elevator pitch? Please describe your business, as well as the products and services you offer.
• Do you currently have a marketing plan in place?
• Who are your competitors?
• Please describe the relative cost of your services (low cost vs. premium)?
• To whom are you selling your product or service (who’s your ideal customer)?
• Which of the following do you currently have in place? (logo, business collateral, direct marketing, website, social media presence, brand campaign, or nothing so far)
• What kind of budget do you have for your project?
• What is the desired timing for the start and completion of your project?

We believe that the best partnerships are authentic and uncomplicated. That’s why our process is simple, efficient, and effective:

1. We’ll meet with you to learn where your business is right now, as well as what has—and hasn’t—worked for you so far.
2. We’ll work with you to determine what you need, whether it’s simply a new logo or an entire marketing plan.
3. We’ll spring into action to deliver the tactics and tools to make great things happen for your business.

Throughout the creative process, we’ll meet with you to share our progress, gather your feedback, and fine-tune your final deliverable, so you’re happy and confident in using your new marketing materials.

To get started, we’ll need to find out:

• Your budget
• Your timing for the project
• Anything that’s a must-have
• Anything you want us to avoid
• Access/log-in credentials for your platform (for digital or social projects)
• Any image or content assets you would like us to use

Our heart lies with small businesses. Why? Because we know that we can make a real difference for them. We love learning their business, transforming their brand, and helping them tell your story and grow. This is why we’ve structured our company of two the way we have. It’s a win-win: we get to work with passionate owners who put their heart into their businesses and provide them with the personalized, expert ideas that might otherwise be out of reach of their budgets.

We created Smallnormous to help smaller clients grow and thrive. We infuse all we do with passion and a commitment to delivering fresh, high-quality work.

Many small business owners don’t quite know where to begin when it comes to developing their brand, creating an online presence, or getting the word out to the right audiences. Or maybe they simply need professional support for their ideas, but don’t have the budget to hire a traditional agency.

We can help. We’ll meet with you to discover where you are right now and then partner with you to reach your next goal.

We believe in you. The little guy. The small business owner. The maker. The doer. The one who gets up and gets after it each day, fueled by passion and the steadfast conviction that you have something great to offer the world. The one who believes that, with a lot of hard work and a little luck, your vision can come to life.

That’s where we can help.

Our mission is to help small companies tell their stories and strengthen their brands in ways that make good financial sense.

We get to know your business and then provide world-class strategy, design, and messaging to help you reach your goals. You’ll get innovative solutions in an efficient, two-person ecosystem that gives you the biggest bang for your buck—whether you’re opening a pop-up in San Francisco or a boutique winery in Sonoma County.

Introducing Smallnormous: a new kind of partner. A trusted advisor, bringing our big-brand expertise and our Fortune-100 experience to local small businesses like yours. To help you tell your story, get noticed, and grow your business.

We believe that small > BIG.

And we’ve got the bold heart, the nimble hands, and the creative thinking to boost your business to the next level. That’s our passion. Because at the end of the day, there’s nothing better than knowing we’ve made a real difference.

A smallnormous difference.

Services

Need to brand your offering, or just ready for a fresh new look and feel? This is the package for you. We’ll get to know your business and target audience, review your existing assets, research your competitors, and then develop three unique explorations of your brand (brand look, feel, and messaging) for you to choose from. To help you envision how your new brand will live in the real world, we’ll create a sample social post, a print ad, and a website homepage, all showcasing your new brand look and messaging.

These services are designed for businesses that need the basics: a logo, a basic single-page website, business cards, and letterhead.

Online is (almost) everything! These services will get you up and running with a website, banner ads, email templates, or your basic social media accounts.

Ready to get social with your customers? We’ll audit your current social properties, customize your social pages, develop messaging and a posting strategy for each platform, and provide you with the guidelines you need to post on your own.

We’ll conduct an audit of your existing assets, deliver recommendations, and educate you about your targets and how to best reach and engage them.

Any number of pages, crafted with custom design & copy to elevate the story of your brand, drive conversion of your target customers, and make sales.

Let’s Get Launched. Whether you want a modern, one-page site or need a robust, multi-page site, we’ll get you launched and ready for business quickly.

Single-Page Website Set-Up
Your content, your images, and your copy—optimized for tablets & smartphones and quickly applied to the template of your choice.

Multi-Page Website Set-Up
Up to 5 pages filled with your content, your images, and your copy—mobile optimized and speedily implemented on a template you select.

How the Process Works*
1. We’ll meet to discuss the goals and functionality of your new site.
2. You’ll hand over your own image assets and desired copy.
3. We’ll build, tweak, and optimize your site, so it works perfectly.
4. We throw the switch and launch your brand-new website.

*This process applies for single- and multi-page (non-custom sites). Custom development will follow a similar process, but will entail a few additional steps.
