I have been at multiple events in different places between Harrisburg and New Jersey that served various treats from Sharon’s Sweet Beginnings. My favorites have been chocolate cup cakes with butter cream icing and thin mints. She also made a wonderful birthday cake for me. It was two cakes with numbers for my age and with a photograph and theme. One vanilla and one chocolate. She can make any custom item or combination. The quality and taste are exceptionally good. She has learned new recipes to meet a customer’s request. Sweet Beginnings was the best place to get a cake from...we order all of our families birthday cakes or special event cakes from there now. First of all the cake tastes amazing... never had anything taste so good! Second all of...the price can not be beat! Third of all...she is the sweetest lady ever!! What do you love most about your job?
Teaching people what they need to know about bakeries and how to deal with them. Since I am an old school baker, I'm more up front and honest about what you are going to get. I love the look of fondant, but I don't wish to have that flavor on my cake. You spend a minimum of a $1 per serving extra just to put that on your cake. For example, a 6" round, a 9" round and a 12" round is the smallest three tier cake that I do (if you put at least 3" between each layer, there is less of a chance of the cake falling over on the cake table if knocked). That cake serves 100 people. Almost any flavor cake and vanilla buttercream icing will start out at $3 per serving, that makes it a $300 cake with vanilla buttercream icing decorations. (Most bakeries start at $5 per serving) If you just add fondant to the cake (not including decorations) you are at $4.00-$4.50 per serving. Add fondant or gum-paste decorations (charged by the hour) or fresh flowers and your own cake top. Upgraded flavors with filling is always extra as well. You can see how a $300 cake jumps to $450 or a lot more! The average style wedding cake is a 6" round, a 10" round and a 14" round. I charge $400 for three different flavored cakes, vanilla buttercream icing, and 2 hours of vanilla buttercream icing decorations! That is unheard of in my field.
There is a photo with my photos that shows you how many servings each layer of cake serves, so you have an idea of where you are starting from with me. Make sure there is at least 3" between each layer and multiply it by $3 per serving. What you get from me is three different flavored cakes decorated in vanilla buttercream icing. All brides get a FREE 6" round fresh baked anniversary cake for their one year anniversary with the purchase of any 3 tier design.
What inspired you to start your own business?
Most of my friends always said that I should start my own business. After my son graduated from high school, I decided to take a leap of faith (with a whole lot of prayer!) and buy Sweet Beginnings in Downingtown because it was my favorite cake and candy supply company to purchase from. High quality supplies and suggestions as well as recipes! The business was around since 1982 and was well known. When I purchased it, I added a commercial kitchen to make candy, cakes, pastries and pies as well! I love what I do, and I love the look on my clients faces when they see it. That to me is priceless!
After my granddaughter, Mackenzie, turned 4, she used to love working with me in the kitchen as well. She is fabulous at making candy turtles and absolutely loves to show people how to make them! She has helped me with a lot of candy projects from the Downingtown Cheer Squad's 150 milk chocolate lollipop megaphones to the candy decorations on my cakes!
Why should our clients choose you?
I come bearing gifts! For every event consult I set up, I bring a half dozen cupcakes. Half vanilla and half chocolate with my homemade vanilla buttercream icing. I meet clients from Downingtown to Harrisburg at a location that they choose. If your home is within those milestones, I will meet you there!
I am so easy to work with and my prices are reasonable. If you are only getting a two layer single tiered cake for a party and want it to look like a cake you seen online, just text or email me a photo and I will call you back with a price based whether or not you want it exactly like the photo, or you want to downsize it to the number of people you need to serve. My single tiered double layered starts at $2 per serving for one flavor cake decorated in vanilla buttercream icing. Fondant and filling is always extra.
