What do you love most about your job?
I love working diverse styles that people have, it's different everyday, I love the challenge of delivering exactly the look that the Customer is wanting to achieve. I love turning a sows ear into a silk purse and putting love back into a piece that has lost its shine
What inspired you to start your own business?
My name is Claire,
I hate waste! I HATE throwing things away that can be given a use for with a little TLC, I began up-cycling and revamping old furniture a few years ago when I bought an old period house which I wanted to fill with pieces that had a history and en-grained with memories. I had always done projects for myself, and had a flair for design. I spent a weekend in Nottingham and the couple who ran the B&B I stayed in also owned a shop where they created beautiful furniture makeovers, I filled up the S-Max with as much as I could carry and after a long chat which inspired me I came home and decided to have a go myself. I have always been interested in Art and Interior Design in a big way right from school (a long time ago) and always toyed with basing a business around my passion for it. I had previously run a successful self employed business for several years, so that part didn't phase me, but would people be interested in my stuff? Well it kind of became a hobby at first, I needed to earn some money and couldn't work due to me having a very young child, but needed something to work around my family commitments and lifestyle. I sold my first couple of pieces on eBay, and then created a Facebook page it went crazy! Not at first, but my friend at Baps and Wraps in Norton asked me to re-design the shop interior, it was daunting,challenging and I was out of my comfort zone, but it paid off, I left business cards in there and continue to do work from recommendations, directly and indirectly from Baps and Wraps, and the facebook page took off as i posted more revamped pieces. My son is a Web and Logo Designer so I guilt tripped him into designing me a website http://theshabbyshack.co.uk/ Presently I work from inside my home which is less than ideal, but we own some garages and a plot of land adjacent to our property which we are in the process of converting into a workshop, and in the bigger picture perhaps a retail unit. I'm loving it and passionate about my work
