What's not to love? The Screen Door is set in an old farmhouse in Dayton. The menu tempted me with all manner of delicious sounding stuff, and had me wishing I had time to sample it all. I ultimately opted for the Crab Cakes while my wife had the Cahun Vegetable Pasta. Both arrived in big, generous portions and were both excellent. Other family ordered the (gigantic) Meatloaf served with Mashed Potatoes and a grilled Pimento Cheese sandwich with a side of Cajun Veggies. We were all quickly rendered quiet as our mouths were otherwise occupied. I was immediately jealous of the Meatloaf. It was an enormous slab of meat atop Mashed  Potatoes and topped with Fried Onion Straws. I'm not sure how my son was able to eat it all.We finished with Peanut Butter Pie - excellent. It was somewhat pricier than a typical casual dining franchise, but well worth it.Meanwhile, the staff was super friendly.I recommend! So good!  I love that it is in an old school house.  Such good homemade food and the menu is very diverse.  Pasta, seafood, burgers,  sandwiches, salads, something for everyone.  And even though i have not had it myself, the brunch on Sundays is apparently phenomenal.  BYOB though if you would like an adult beverage. Wonderful lunch, great service and prices, Delicious foodMy husband and I had an errand to do in Dayton, so we looked up restaurants in the area and decided upon the Screen Door Kitchen (Cafe. )  We were not disappointed.  The service was the best we have experienced, from the warm welcome as we entered, to the constant attention and very quick food delivery, we were made to feel very special.   We were there for a Saturday lunch, and opted for two "Snacks" (appetizers)  Fried Green Tomatoes with Pimento Cheese and Herb Aioli and Soul Rolls (Egg rolls stuffed with BBQ, Collard Greens and Hoppin'Jon, served with BBQ Duck Sauce.  Both were FANTASTIC!!  Since we ordered two appetizers, we decided to split a Chicken Livers plate.  For $8 we got hot, fresh chicken livers cooked perfectly.  This came with two sides.  Both of us wanted the collard greens, so we got a double serving of them, and they were a great Southern menu treat.  The table beside of us got burgers and sandwiches, and they were piled high and looked great.   I will post photos from our very positive experience at this restaurant. I recently ate at the Screen Door Cafe for brunch and I was blown away by the crab cake eggs Benedict and home fries. It wasn't like anything I've had before. I was expecting some mediocre portion of eggs Benedict with an average tasting, previously frozen crab cake on top...I was wrong. It was SO delicious that I ate every bit of it. And the home fries...let me tell you home girl...SO GOOD! I would order that as my main meal! My daughter got a side order of waffles and bacon and this was anything but average. I'm not sure how they make their amazing Belgian waffles, but this was by far the best one I've ever had. And their bacon is thick cut and smoked to perfection. I highly recommend brunch at the Screen Door Cafe. The only thing that would make it better would be mimosas! More...

This is on the Top of my list of places to eat while visiting Dayton.  Each year I go on a girls trip to Tennessee, and we always stop to shop and eat the weekend they kick off their Holiday shopping in historic downtown Dayton. We love to support small businesses. The Screen Door Kitchen is a few blocks away from Market st. Not in walking distance, but an easy drive.  The outside has a nice curb appeal being a charming 1900's farm house with a pretty front porch. Inside has a nice clean, comfy atmosphere with 2 rooms set up to dine in.  The food is delicious!  Recently, I had the crab cakes (2) per order...nice sized portions and full of tasty crab meat! My friends loved their meals too.  One had the the pork tenderloin. It was cooked on a smoker making it super tender and moist.  The Service is friendly, Prices are good and the food quality is excellent!Wish we had a Screen Door Kitchen in Marietta, Ga.  We'll be back to dine same time next year!!! The food was excellent. I had the fried catfish and my husband had the ribeye steak. Both were terrific and cooked to perfection. The mashed potatoes were yummy, not traditional...(think, thick mashed red potatoes) very good! The collard greens are to-die-for. No additional pepper sauce or seasoning needed. Service was excellent. Server was nice, informative and answered all of our questions enthusiastically. The reason for 4 stars is this: When we left, one of the kitchen staff employees was on the front porch smoking! It's the only was for customers to leave and we had to walk right by him. Sorry, but that's just disgusting. Not a deal breaker. We will go back. But definitely a turn off! More...

What a gem in Dayton, TN. Screen Door catered for a wedding and the food was impeccable. From hors d'ouevres (curried cauliflower, charcuterie meats and cheeses, pickled vegetables, seasonal fruit) to drinks (sparkling water infused with blueberry and mint, hibiscus tea (unsweetened! )) to the main course (roasted and pulled pork - insanely juicy and flavorful, fried fish, crab linguini, salad, and ceviche), we were never disappointed. A plus job for the catering.Brunch on Sunday was equally charming and delicious. Cheese (light, though) grits, the softest biscuits with sausage and an oh-so-yum gravy, scrambled eggs, and banana bread with pecan butter. Amazing.Their food here is one of a kind and they really take care in their flavors, presentation, and diversity and uniqueness of the menu items. You don't feel drowned by any "heavy" feeling in their food (grease, salt, oils, etc.). Love. Staff are all friendly and family-oriented.Will be back soon when I get the chance! More...

We were in Dayton today for a baseball tournament. I wanted to get in to the city early so we could eat lunch but that didn't happen. After the rain shut the ball game down we decided to get a late lunch. I was looking on yelp to see what was close and the Screen Door Cafe popped up with 4.5 stars so I thought we'd give it a try. We pulled in and were greeted warmly by one of the employees. We were seated immediately and then asked to move and were accommodated easily. We wanted to move because the main dinning area was really quiet and echoed a bit and we didn't want to disturb the other patrons when our seven month old started to scream. I ordered the burger and made it a double with no bun and added an egg. It was amazing and so were the Cajun veggies. They were spicy and delicious. If you're in town, I highly recommend giving them a try. You won't regret it. More...

Nice evening for a drive so headed up highway 60 to Dayton. Decided to try a local favorite. First of all the building (house) has so much history. It makes you feel like you are pulling up to grandma's house on the farm. And then the smell of cows and farm animals along with the drifting smell of BBQ and grilled meat as you get out of the car. Takes me back to when I was a kid on my grandparents farm.  The food was amazing and we listened to the tables around us, everyone had high praises for the food. There are a few things that are a little spicy, make sure to check with your server.  The cheesecake is made in house and seems to be a favorite as they were sold out by 6 pm but there were lots of other sweetness on the menu. The menu had a variety of choices and most everything is made in house which makes for a fresh and flavorful meal. My only negative with our experience was the wait for our meal...a good 45 minutes from the time we ordered. We were sure they were chasing the cow and chicken down outside.  The way the rooms are separated it is hard to tell how many people were there but no line out the door and we had to wait that long for our meal. Service was good, kept our drinks filled and was pleasant.  We will make the drive again to try a few more entrees along with dessert.  Hopefully next time we won't have to wait quite as long...but I have to say it was delish! Finally got to eat here! The shrimp and grits were highly recommended, so I went for it. The grits were formed into two "cakes", battered and fried-which was awesome. The sauce was tasty and mixed well with the grits. The shrimp looked great, but tasted a bit "too fishy". Although, it is January in a landlocked state...still, it was off-putting. We went to Dayton to visit family and found this great place in an old Victorian just outside of town in a beautiful location. Food is maybe best described as classy country fare made with care. Very interesting and tasty. Great selection of homemade desserts that taste so good you don't feel all that guilty. Waitstaff helpful and friendly. Interior just a bit bare. It wouldn't hurt to have some objects from the past a la Cracker Barrel or local sourced paintings or art .Chairs also not padded and a mite uncomfortable but that was after tarrying 1 1/2 hours due to good company.   So in summary this 60+ year old reviewer has seen and dined at many a good restaurant and this place evidently cares about the quality of their fare with interior decor being only a minor issue. I love out of the way, quaint places to eat. We drove up from Chattanooga specifically to eat here after driving by a few weeks ago. I like that I can get a good salad here and that sets it apart from the usual country cooking cafes in the smaller towns. I would come back for the salad. Husband had a burger and fries; I snitched a few fries, and they were awesome!I had the chocolate chip pecan pie and it was disappointing. The crust was more like a shortbread cookie texture than pie crust.  It just didn't taste quite right...it was served cold (I asked them to heat it up) and what appears to be chocolate chips in the photo is actually burnt pecans (which probably affected the taste).I love the quaint house and enjoyed the beautiful drive up.
