they're good for kids
A gem of a small museum in the heart of Roanoke.More geared towards children, though as adults we enjoyed our visit. We spent a couple of hours here looking at everything. Some of the exhibits were not working, but this did not spoil our enjoyment too much.We were disappointed with the Butterfly garden though. It looked liked of dead in there foliage wise, and there were not may Butterfly's to be seen. More...
We go to museums all over the country using reciprocity from our home museum, so we have seen a lot of the same stuff over and over. While this museum does have some of that, a lot of the museum is really unique! Our kids (5, 7, and 9) spent hours here without being bored and didn't want to leave. More...
We celebrated my son's third birthday at the Science Museum and the kids as well as the adults, all had a great time. The party was well organized and the party attendants took care of collecting the presents and greeting our guests. They also provided everything we needed to serve food (plates, silverware, napkins) in addition to lemonade and cups. They shared a craft for all of the kids to do and took care of those supplies as well. The party planner called me a couple days before to help me with details and to answer my questions, which was much appreciated and super thoughtful. This is a great place to throw a party because there is something for everyone to enjoy at the museum. The service they provide is also above standard and really helped me save money on the little things that add up quickly (like the invitations and party supplies). Highly recommend, easy party and a lot of fun! More...
Cool place to take the kids
Awesome place. Lots to see.
Staff is helpful and friendly. There are salt water aquariums throughout the lobby. The museum offers lots of hands on activities to explore. We ended up buying a membership at the end of our visit. It will save you money if you plan to visit more than once a year. More...
I've always enjoyed the science museum ever since coming here for school field trips. It seemed so much bigger then, but that's most of life I guess. A good place to take the kids, especially on a rainy day, but it's interesting enough that adults shouldn't get bored. The butterfly garden looked very promising when we were there some months back, but it was either under construction or maintenance, and butterfly-less. Still was a neat garden, and it's an interesting feeling being in an indoor garden atop a building in the city. I'd recommend checking it out. The crystal rock gallery was worth more than tune admission price itself I'm uploading all the pics I took of it, but photos don't compare. Go check out these specimens! More...
We've gone several times with our kids over the years, and its a great experience. The exhibits are high quality and well cared for. A real asset to the community.
This is a cool place and much better than you'd expect for a museum occupying a couple of floors in a larger building. One of the most important things a science museum has to do is to explain the scientific principles it exhibits. This science museum does that wonderfully, and it does it in a way that is both accessible to kids and substantive to adults. I can't overstate how great this is. Otherwise it's a glorified playground, but this museum got it exactly right in nearly every exhibit.I took my two boys there, not knowing if it would be worth the trip or not. They had a blast and learned some things, too. The museum fills two floors in the Center in the Square building. You can reach both floors by stairs or elevator, but I'm partial to the illuminated stairs inside the museum, each bearing the name and dates of a famous scientist. That's a cool detail that's totally unnecessary but really adds to the experience. There's a sizable exhibit on the first floor of the museum devoted to aquatic life complete with a touch tank. Another exhibit examines how topography affects water flow and allows you to manipulate a map projected on a small sandbox to see it in real time. I think this was my kids' favorite exhibit and it was quite well done. Other exhibits examine core drilling and extraction, how there human heart works, and there's a trippy space that allows you to see your shadow in 3D.The second floor has a group of smaller exhibits which cover topics from light refraction to potential and kinetic energy, resonance, and aerodynamics, along with many others. There's also a garden area with some interesting plants, though my kids weren't interested in it, so I didn't get a chance to see what it was all about. We are members at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond and our membership there was honored here and allowed us to enter for free. Reciprocity is great! Several different exhibits had broken or missing elements. It didn't ruin the experience by any means, and only two small exhibits were broken outright to the point of being unusable. It's understandable and unavoidable when you have so many people, including a lot of kids, interacting with the displays. Still, only one of them was marked as broken while the other left us to wonder if we were missing something about how to interact with it.A note about parking. If you drive to the museum, there is a parking garage attached to the Center in the Square building. It's not cheap, though. It's a dollar for every half-hour, capped at $8 for a day. There are other parking garages within walking distance that may be cheaper. You can expect to easily spend half a day there. Plan for more if you or your kids like making things as the maker space has many different materials to experiment with.If you have a child with sensory issues, there is a small sensory space in the younger kids area. There isn't a lot there, but it is a nice haven if the rest of them museum gets too loud or busy or if your kid just needs a break from too many stimuli. More...
Take your time when walking through. Some of the best concepts will take a minute to absorb. Typically science. Good stuff in here.
What a great place to bring the family!! The staff was super friendly and all the cool stuff they have for kids to do is quite entertaining!! I loved walking around and exploring everything. There's so many activities from a virtual reality thing where you move the sand to make mountain ranges and you can make it rain... There's also a touch tank where you can see horseshoe crabs . All kinds of things to learn at this place !!! They have change the concept of the garden from butterflies to food. I find this to be a better use of space to educate people on how to grow food .. I highly recommend you bring your kids and start the learning :) More...
Pretty fun place for a 4 & 6 year old. They enjoyed the open building area
Small but fun and very interactive! Me and my kids love the giant toys exhibit!
Sarah Pauline Finch Jackson
I might be biased because I worked there years ago, but I love this place. They have really brought it forward to the 21st century.
What a great museum. Interactive for all ages. The scavenger hunt really gets you engaged. And they even have one for adults. :)
Great for a small science museum. The rooftop is great!
Great for Children ages 5-8. We only checked out a couple of areas this time, but we would like to go back one day and spend a whole day and see what else we can learn. Maybe then my age range change, too. More...
kid friendly, beautiful garden and touch tank,
hadn't been here since I had been on a school trip almost a decade ago. However, the exhibits are excellent, I can't wait to go back. The family and I will be going back sometime soon. Really looking forward to it. More...

I was super excited about the butterfly Garden! But they didnt have it open at the moment sadly...
We have been here twice. Once to the kids play area on the 4th floor and then today for the glow in the dark easter egg hunt. The play area was super fun for the kids who were 18 months and 2.5 with tons of fun things for them to play in on and with. the area with the pretend vet office was my daughters favorite. they had x Ray's with the lightboard of different animals. stuffed animals in kennels, a wash station, computer and phone and lots of different vet toys to play with. the easter egg hunt today was super fun for the kids and we got access to the 5th floor science museum where we got to make slime, decorate bags, play and explore. I would definitely recommend bringing your kids here or even going by yourself to check everything out. it's fun with lots of interactive exhibits! More...
Pretty nice - but several exhibits were down. Too many imo.
The glow in the dark egg hunt was fantastic! I had fun and I was simply a bystander...
This place is much better than I expected! Definitely a place to bring your kids, but fun for adults too! Lots of interactive exhibits!
The children have alot interactions with almost everything in the museum. The workers give alot helpful information to the children.
enjoyed the comfortable and cleaness of the facility staff was very polite and friendly with the kids showed interest and willing to answer any questions that the kids asked.

The Science Museum is a great place to spend the day, especially with kids! There is so much to do that I don’t think others realize. The fifth floor galleries are all about hands on fun! Giant Legos to build with, giant light brite, arcade games, a maker lab for non stop creativity and the bubble- a safe place for smaller children and a sensory friendly, cool down/calm space.and several other fun activities! I can’t wait for the planetarium to be back open- sounds like something really exciting is in store! More...

Always fun and interesting things. Looking forward to butterflies return.
Kept my 8 year old and 16 year old happily interested! Highly recommend!
Little bit expensive but we had a great time.
It is a great learning experience for kids.
Amazing! Me and my boyfriend went to it as a date night and had a blast, keep in mind we are 20 year olds and it was still educational and fun for both of us.
I hadn't been since I was a kid and really enjoyed taking my 7month old daughter and my best friend who had never been. I can't wait until she is a little older and can partake in more of the activities. I was pretty bummed there weren't any butterflies More...
A really fantastic place to visit, explore, and learn. I can't wait to go back soon with my daughter and spend more time.
Very fun, each floor is nice, ranging from pinball to arcade, science of technology to fish, and much more. Recommended to visit with a partner, or family. Closed on Mondays, but have a good time schedule. Price is worth going there. Go there and have a grand ol time. Also features a Pokemon Go pokestop. More...
Kids had a great time, however some of the exhibits were either broken or showing their age.
Great place. I loved it. Visited with my brother & his grandkids. I love Roanoke.
Neat place to spend a day but A bit pricey! I couldnt see spending that kind of money bringing a big family there.
For adult only tour it's a solid 4/5, if you have kids in tow 5/5. So much to do in such a central location!

Pinball museum was a blast
Very fun for people of nearly all ages.
All of my four grandchild (ages 4-12) LOVE this place. They all live in bigger cities (Richmond and Atlanta) and like this one better than what is available in those cities.
The science museum has something for everyone. Great place to learn and to play!
We had a good time! More for kids, next time I'll take my grandkids

We are members and enjoy this quaint museum. It also makes us get in free or highly discounted into other museums all across the us and internationally.
Interactive science exhibits, animals, and wonderful summer day camps for kiddos. Free access atrium aquarium exhibits at ground level.
We believe in supporting our hometown science museum and still think it is worth your time. It's grown more interactive with maker spaces and a wonderful coding playroom but has given us a chillier reception on most recent visits--staff has seemed more disinterested.
This is a great place to bring your kids. The pinball museum is really cool.
Melissa and the Growlers were EXCELLENT! (Rooftop Riot-moved inside due to rain) The museum is both diverse, and educational!
An annual membership is the best gift I've given myself!
Christopher Adcock Jr.
Worked for a non-profit and this museum allowed us to bring special groups. Can't say anything bad about this place.
We visited the kids square and we were baffled by the high quality of entertainment and fun they have for kids.

Fun and educational
The most amazing museum around.
Lots to do! We were there for 3 hours and we easily could've been there an hour longer!
Enjoyed the museum. However, this was not the first time their advertised main exhibit had been closed during the time in which it was supposed to be available, and although a coupon is given to revisit, it's not a trip I make often and end up never getting to see the main attraction.
Little Green Hive
We love the family pass. Always a good idea.
We've been members for 2 years and love it. Even with going fairly often, we all enjoy it every time.
Learned a lot and love the experiments they had for the public to see.
Perfect for a fun afternoon with my 7 year old -- enjoyed very much, will definitely visit again.
Good for children. Still entertaining for adults
Great place to take the kids. Lots of fun activities for everyone.
This is a great museum in the heart of Roanoke. I think it is especially good for children, as there are lots of hands on activities that allow for scientific exploration. A great feature of this museum is a special set of rooms that are dedicated to sensory play. There are also employees and volunteers that are very helpful and interact very well with children, showing them, for example some of the live animals they could touch or other activities they could play with. Well worth the cost of admission for a good morning or afternoon spent with the family. More...
Fun for the whole family
Excellent exhibts. Lots to see.
History, Science & Pinball museum all in one. They have a roof top observation deck and butterfly garden. They offer packages and individual activities. Great place to take the kids.
I've been going here since I was a kid. It's clean, updated, and easy to access. It's fun. They now have a children's museum. I love going here with my family.
Excellent place for kids. Lots of learning through play and so much to do.
Loved this place!! Great for families. Very interactive and engaging - perfect place for kids!! Teaches real scientific principles, too. Practical and useful. Would love to go back!! More...
Absolutely fantastic! Will be going again. And they do b-day parties!!!!
One of my all time favorite museums, especially in this part of Virginia. There are several floors, all child and adult friendly, in which there are various exhibits on each floor and generally themed a bit by floor. The butterfly and koi roof top was an amazing add on and all the remodeling was well worth the closure several years back. I was fortunate enough to fabricate and install all of the new stone countertops and other pieces, so I was super excited to see what was new. More...
Great for kids

Wonderful history lesson!
Lots to do unfortunately butterfly area was closed while we were there
Very educational. Loved the butterfly garden and the fact that we could do a butterfly release ❤️

Very fun and better than what i thought. My daughter loved it.
Went here with my kids and hubby think my husband like it alittle more then my children but they had fun and there was somethings there that each of my kids ages 1,3,4 liked to do !
Great place for the kids!
Rainy day at the lake led us here. Staff was nice, exibits where great, perfect for our 3 year old. Only downside is the butterfly excibit was closed and while we got tickets that don't expire our 3 year old will have a fit of he can't see the entire museum all over again when we go to use them...
One of the best small museums I've been to, even though the butterfly garden was under construction. The kids had a blast.
Lots of fun stuff for kids
Highly recommended for toddlers my daughter loved walking around seeing everything especially the butterfly exhibit! I personally loved the touch tank
Alice Humphreys Craft
Our first visit. It is expensive but we are going to look into membership. Kid Zone was spectacular and that’s all that matters for a 4 year old.
Cassidy Thomas Hensley
My 6 and 2 year old really enjoyed the activities! It would be very nice if there were an attendant in the LAB area to demonstrate amd help the kids!
Took my 3 grandsons - ages 8,7, and 4. It was absolutely amazing! We spent over 3 hours in the Children's Museum and we could have spent more. I loved it as much as they did. A treasure in Downtown Roanoke!!! More...

A bit small but if your interested in science related stuff then you will like it I came right after a school came along so some of those kids left some things dirty but even then it was still a nice place I recommend to anyone that is interested in science and is in the area
Great place to take your kids to learn and have fun!
Very educational and fun for all. Staff was nice and informative. We had a great time at this museum. And enjoyed the features of learning and playing with science! The butterfly garden is very neat and enjoyable! Try out the arcade check out the aquariums too. The cost is not too steep. Great deal if you are staying around for a day or two to get the all included tickets. Go learn and have fun. More...
My kids love it here so many great exhibits. I was there recently as a Volunteer for the Roanoke Harry Potter Fest. Great staff, friendly and informative.
Really fun most of the exhibits were for smaller children bit the butterfly garden was great.

Great place to bring young kids and teens.
Every time we go here, there are some new exhibits. There are plenty of hands on learning activities for everyone, not just the children.
Very good activity to do with friends and family
Great place to enjoy science with your children.
Me encanto hay mucho que ver ,explorar y aprender maravillosa experiencia
Kid friendly. Very unique
Very nice facility. Aquariums in the lobby are a nice touch. Rooftop view of Roanoke.
Most fun your kids can have in this town and the new management keeps improving the place!

Great fun to play with your children at science exhibits! Much smart stuff to do here!
Kids really enjoyed it. We all loved the butterfly garden.
Kids are always entertained. They love the exhibits and learn a lot each visit.
Great place for kids to explore
Great place for the family to spend the day.
Great way to see science at work! Neat.
This place is AWESOME. I have an 18 month old and an 11 year old. Everyone had a blast while learning something new around each corner.
Was taken aback while we were on the first floor wondering why I spent that amount of money to get my family in there. BUT as soon as we got to the second floor it was all worth it and we spent the rest of our time up there. Our kids(2.5/5) did not want to leave so I definitely call it a win. The first floor is educational but definitely needs some work to update the exhibits. The second floor has a little bit of everything for every age group. Would definitely recommend for the age groups of my family. More...
I bought a Grandparent Membership, 2 weeks ago and the kids love it. We've been countless times. The little ones are content to play in the Bubble Room for hours, my older grandson is never ready to leave. Everyone is friendly and courteous. More...
The 3rd floor of the science museum had several exhibits that didn't work. That frustrated me more than the kids. The 4th floor was really fun. We got scolded for my 5 year-old daughter using the back of her hand to try to get a butterfly to land on her & she barely touched a flower. That was a little on the dissapointing side, especially since we were respectful of the property. Overall, it was fun with room for some improvements (I see several other reviews that mentioned the broken exhibits). More...
It's a great place for children to explore, play and have fun. They have a variety of activities that include weather, animals and the human body to name a few. Even adults can have fun too.
Came from out of town with my best friend and we wanted something to do so we showed up at the museum at 4:15 not realizing they closed at 5. Didn't matter. Everyone was so friendly and willing to help. My Favorite was the butterfly exhibit and the older gentleman that was in there. If you talk to him he can tell you so much! He made it more fun and interesting. I recommend this place. I will be back! More...
The museum is on the small size and some of the interactive exhibits were not working which was disappointing. We also thought the price was a bit high for what they had. But with that said, we enjoyed what exhibits they did have and liked that a museum like this is close to home. The kids we observed there really seemed to be having a great time. More...

Learning has never been more fun than it is here! Thanks so much for a wonderful science day for area schools. William Byrd Middle School students had a great time! The staff was friendly, the exhibits were fun and knowledgeable, and the butterflies were amazing!
When my kid was young, we got a family membership and enjoyed the exhibits frequently, at no additional charge. Our membership included admissions to science museums around the country. My kids love the Science Museum! Open Lab is awesome, and the planetarium shows are fun. My youngest especially loves it when he gets a chance to see an animal up close. Yay, Science:)
Life Academy's pre-k had a great time at the Science museum. The workers were informative and helped the children gain a wonderful experience and knowledge about many of their exhibits. We enjoyed the dinosaur and the butterfly garden the best. They really enjoyed the "How it Works" exhibit where they could do many things hands on! The kids love going to the science museum. The staff is very informative and friendly.
Great for kids and families. Lots of hands on exhibits. Live animals (especially aquatic). Butterfly garden is amazing. Family rest rooms. Some of the best health exhibits I have seen in a kid oriented museum. Plenty of low cost good restaurants nearby. Parking is usually easy to get and not costly.
