About

Dominic Cullinan and Jon Buck met at Ian Ritchie Architects in 1989 and have worked together ever since, forming a partnership in 1996, Cullinan And Buck Architects Ltd, CABAL in 1999 and SCABAL in 2005.

For over twenty years every project has been driven by both directors, together with all the excellent clients, users, artists, philosophers, filmmakers, photographers, dancers, teachers, writers, academics, archaeologists, gardeners, engineers, builders and architects who have joined in over time.

BUILDING, LANDSCAPE AND INTERIOR DESIGN

With great clients, passionate users, expert consultants and skilled builders, we have been the Architects for many innovative workplaces, homes, schools and environments for leisure over the past twenty years.

The RIBA has described the Architect’s role in the preparation, design, construction and completion of a building project through a Schedule of Design Services divided into Work Stages 0-7. As an RIBA Chartered Practice, SCABAL uses these stages as the rules of engagement on building projects against which the particular service required can be negotiated with the client on a stage by stage basis.

The particular service and the associated fee, whilst agreed at an early stage is also open to negotiation as the project progresses, flexible enough to be tuned in order to ensure the most successful outcome. We will always professionally advise on the best way to separate, sift and select our level of involvement.

As an experienced construction professional, specially trained skilled in maximising the quality and value of construction projects, Dominic Cullinan was accredited as one of the first RIBA Client Design Advisers in 2005.

SCABAL’s team of Client Advisers can provide vital independent advice that will help you run your construction project efficiently and achieve best value and high quality. An RIBA Client Adviser will assist you from the earliest stages of a project in:

• Design brief development
• Budget-setting
• Feasibility studies
• Procurement procedures
• Appraisals of design proposals
• Project monitoring through to completion
• Occupancy Evaluation

Whilst many of our building projects begin with and are progressively informed by the exercises of thoroughly assessing and reporting on the feasibility of a nascent project, bespoke programmes of consultation and our expertise to place the present in a wider and future masterplanning context, SCABAL has also developed these activities as specific stand alone disciplines and offer these them therefore as separate services.

The conservation, restoration and re-use of historic buildings is profoundly sustainable. This is true regarding the old fabric, often of a provenance and quality so special and rare as to make it unfeasible in most building projects today. In the way these structures connect past people and life to our present, these buildings also carry a collective memory and give special meaning to those who relate to them now and in the future.

We specialize in the repair, renovation, re-use, extension of listed buildings and new buildings in the curtilage of historic and listed buildings from preparation to completion. This service is offered in line with the RIBA Work Stages described in the RIBA Chartered Practice section.

SCABAL’s approach to consultation begins by recognising that there are often many stakeholders with different views, needs and expertise with whom to collaborate and also that many contributors will start off unidentified.

We understand that local knowledge and experience really is important and we have developed many ways to enable communication and participation to engender a sense of ownership and influence for the project. This process should start as early as possible to contribute effectively to the best development of the brief.
