The minute I entered Sanyukta Shrestha's Boutique, I instantly felt warm and welcomed. It was the first time in my life that I tried on a wedding dress and was also quite nervous about it. From start to finish, at every stage of the process from confirming my appointment to finding the perfect dress, the care, professionalism and attention to detail of the team at Beluhi shone through. I had the most wonderful experience at a Behuli by Sanyuktha Shrestha. From the moment I arrived Elham was so accommodating, especially as I had four of my family members who came along with me. Working with Sanyukta, Elham and the team was an incredible experience from start to finish. As a plus-size bride, I was hesitant when I first arrived at the Behuli atelier that any of her gorgeous silk creations would fit me, but Sanyukta made me feel so comfortable and very quickly put me at ease! My dress idea came to life with her design flair and within seconds of her pinning me in, and few quick adjustments I knew I had found the perfect dress that completely represented me.The story of women’s empowerment and working with the Nepalese Ashram also really spoke to me and I was delighted that by purchasing my wedding gown through Behuli, that I would also be supporting sustainability and women’s equality!My dress was made out of the hemp fabric, which shone so beautifully (I’m sure the hypoallergenic qualities were helping to calm me down on the day)! I have a fascination with fashion history, especially the 1930s and '40s, and a determination not to dress like anybody else. I had imagined that it would not be possible to find a wedding dress that captured my wish to be elegant but quirky, bold and pretty at the same time. Oh, and not white, ivory, champagne, or any of the (very lovely) colours that tradition holds brides should embrace but that do nothing at all for either my desire to stand out entirely from the crowd or my very, very pale skin and strawberry-blonde elfin crop. After we found that commissioning a bespoke dress from scratch was both a bit risky and a bit too costly, my best friend and witness (no bridesmaids in Italy, where I married) searched for designers in London whose dresses recalled the flair and panache of the 1930s yet without being slaves to vintage: inspired by past fashions but with modern and directional twists. She found Sanyukta. Her boutique is sumptuous but intimate, the dresses both ingenious and exquisite. The cliche goes that the moment you try on your wedding dress you know it's the one. Well, it's true! The combination of strength and detail in the dress I chose made me gasp. And its design and fit gave me a new confidence, a real fillip, when it came to my (6ft, athletic) figure. Sanyukta's discreet presence was both encouraging and inspiring. The materials she uses are soft and delicate beyond imagination, their eco-origins a tonic to our consumerist world, and she was wholly receptive to me having one of her designs in a colour that nobody had had before: a kind of art-deco pink, which did something magic to my complexion. Her service and attention to detail are exemplary and I have received endless accolades about the rarity and beauty of the dress (expertly fitted like a glove by Gina).
