So here is a review from my experience training under Kyoshi Gerry nearly 27 years ago. I started at the age of 3 1/2 in 1991 at the old dojo before they switched locations and continued until the age of 9. My parents insisted that this would develop my charcter at a young age, teach me discipline and self control. Not only did Kyoshi Gerry accomplish instilling these values but he taught true self defense techniques if walking away was not an option. The techniques learned were later used in self defense with great success. I highly reccomend this dojo and is by far the best in Long Island. More...

Love this place! Thank you for working with Sachem Library and creating a Teen Special Needs class. It's so hard to find activities and classes to join. Sunski has a blast and helps her physically mentally emotionally and builds her self confidence. Sensei is great with the kids. Thank you so much! We look forward to continuing after the workshop is up. :) More...

Several years ago, before I moved, I was taking Kendo classes at Ryu Shu Kan and I have nothing but good things to say about my experience at the dojo. Sensei Gerry, his wife Hiroko, and the students that I trained with made me feel very welcome. You'll receive individual attention from Sensei Gerry and senior students will also help you as well. If you have questions about how or why a technique is executed in a certain way, they are more than happy to explain it to you. If you're thinking about getting involved in martial arts, I suggest you visit the dojo to watch a couple of classes. If you have questions between classes I know Sensei Gerry will be more than happy to answer them for you. More...

I've been studying martial arts at this dojo for 20 years under the instructions of Kyoshi Gerard Senese. All 6 of my family members have attended this school with 4 of them achieving their black belts. The knowledge and expertise passed down from the man who developed this art, Taika Seiyu Oyata to Kyoshi Senese is unsurpassed. The atmosphere at the dojo is friendly and welcoming, and the instruction is right on point. If you're interested in trying a traditional form of martial art look no further, you've come to the right place. More...

I have been going to Ryu Shu Kan for Japanese taiko drum classes for the past 5 years. You won't find another place to explore all kinds of Japanese arts (karate, kendo, taiko, etc. ) anywhere on Long Island. They also offer kickboxing (which kicked my butt when I tried it) and other fitness programs as well. This is a great place to learn more about Japanese culture in a family-friendly, fun, and healthy environment! More...

17 years ago I entered into the Ryu Shu Kan dojo with my then 7 year old son. Since then 2 other sons, my wife and myself (now a 5th degree black belt) have all studied at this school. The philosophy behind the art of true helping hands and life protection arts are second too none. The director of the school has had decades of studying under 10th degree grand master Taika Seiyu Oyata. Kyoshi Senese's knowledge and skill truly shows in his technique, execution, and understanding of an ancient one of a kind true martial art. I highly recommend this school, not only for its excellent martial arts program for both kids and adults, but for the many other programs that are offered here. Kyoshi Senese and his wife Hiroko bring a great piece of Okinawan and Japanese culture to Long Island. More...

I am very interested in Japan, but there aren't too many places on Long Island to experience Japanese culture. Thankfully, there's Ryu Shu Kan! They offer everything from karate to kendo, tai chi to taiko, and it's one of the only places on the island to learn these things. I really value the experiences I've had playing taiko there, the friends I've made, and the fun I've had. I really value Ryu Shu Kan, Kyoshi Gerry, his wife Hiroko, and everything the dojo does. :) More...

RYU SHU KAN HAS BEEN A GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR MY CHILDREN. MY OLDER DAUGHTER STARTED THERE THREE YEARS AGO TO HELP HER SOME BEHAVOIR ISSUES, SINCE THEN SHE HAS LEARNED NOT ONLY SELF DEFENSE BUT RESPECT, SELF WORTH, PATIENCE AND HONOR. SHE ALSO LEARNS AS SHE MOVES UP IN BELTS HOW TO BE A MENTOR TO THE YOUNGER KIDS AND THE NEW STUDENTS. RYU SHU KAN IS ALSO VERY BIG ON THEIR STUDENT DOING WELL IN SCHOOL, THEY EARN TIPS TOWARDS THEIR NEXT BELT WHEN THEY BRING IN A GOOD REPORT CARD. MY DAUGHTER NOT ONLY IMPROVED HER BEHAVIOR BUT ALSO HER SELF ESTEEM. SHE IS NOW 10 AND A BROWN3 BELT AND IS EAGER TO GET HER BLACK BELT. I RECOMMEND THE RYU SHU KAN DOJO TO ANYONE ...THEY HAVE GREAT TEACHERS , THEY ARE VERY PATIENT, GREAT WITH KIDS AND YOUNG ADULTS. More...

Several years ago we attended the Japanese Sakura Matsuri: Cherry Blossom Festival held at Stony Brook and the first time I saw Taiko Drumming - I was awestruck! I had told my mom, "Wouldn't it be great to try that?" Then by chance I received an email from Gerry and as they say, the rest is history. We've been playing taiko drums for several years now and I absolutely love it!I've always wanted to play another instrument and this one spoke to me. Learning taiko has helped me in many ways: it's therapeutic, fun and is helping me to overcome my shyness. Gerry and Hiroko are great teachers and the atmosphere itself is like walking into an ancient Japanese dojo.I have been to different dojo's, but Ryu Shu Kan is my favorite! More...

I started going to Ryu Shu Kan in 2005 when I was looking for a cardio kickboxing workout. The classes are small and Kyoshi Gerry and his wife Hiroko give personal attention. I have lost the flab around my waist and gained muscle tone. I'm a grandma now and I feel better and have more energy than I did ten years ago. I've tried some of their other classes like Japanese folk dancing, womens self defense, tai chi and taiko drumming. I've been taking taiko drumming classes for a few years and I love it! It's a great workout for body and mind. It's also alot of fun doing performances. Everyone there is so nice, it feels like a family. I'm so glad I found their dojo. More...

Japanese festival dances and the stunningly powerful art of taiko drumming is taught and performed here. I originally came to Ryu Shu Kan because it was the only place on Long Island where you can experience Kendo (Samurai Swordsmanship). After many months of following Kendo there, I realized that there was something more which kept me coming back. Every day I attend, I am challenged and pushed to better myself as a person as well as better my techniques in Kendo. The atmosphere is family oriented which is why my 5 year old loves the karate classes as much as I love the Kendo classes. My son is being taught to respect others as well as giving him a good tiring workout (which he always sees as fun). I highly recommend Ryu Shu Kan to anyone who wants to better themselves as a person, gain some new friends, and don't forget....to also learn an amazing martial art. More...
