A fine listed building early 17th Century Manor House sensitively furnished and decorated in keeping with a building dating to 1600. The Edwardian single room is comfortable, clean with tv, tea & coffee facilities. Not en-suite but shower room just across the landing. For the price and character recommended, would stay again. If you want ambience and old style charm this is the place. We were in the Georgian room which had original Georgian panelling. The staircase is delightful with a huge landing and exactly in the character of a small country house. This is no Travelodge or Ibis (excellent though they are); this is a real old style building - that's our style - which makes you think that you are on holiday rather than still at work. We liked many touches: the pot plant of red baby roses and the other fresh flowers. Every small detail seemed to have been thought of. The residents' lounge was large and comfortable. The beds were comfortable and we had a very quiet night despite the proximity of the road (a village street not a main through route). The breakfast was superb (5 stars). Good parking. We specifically chose a room that did not have an en-suite but our private bathroom was not far away and dressing gowns and slippers were provided. If you need dinner there are several restaurants within walking distance, one of which has top notch fine dining. This B&B is a great discovery. More...

My room was pleasant and clean and the furniture worked well with the age and character of the house. Although the ensuite was very small, i appreciate that if you want to stay in an old building, it's not always possible to have a large modern bathroom. I was pleased with the large TV in my room. The house has character with some creaky floorboards but had a nice feeling generally. Bed was comfortable & warm. Nice to have tea, coffee & hot chocolate in the room. Filter coffee was available downstairs along with a microwave...always a plus for solo travellers who don't always want to eat out alone. The bar of chocolate and complimentary bottle of water was also appreciated. There was a very good selection for breakfast and plenty to eat. I had trouble accessing the internet but it wasn't a big deal as i used my phone instead. More...

My husband and I were staying for one night on the way back from a trip to Lincolnshire just at the end of the last bout of very cold and wet weather in April. We arrived around 6pm and parked and found our way in perfectly easily thanks to the very clear directions we had been sent. It was such a relief to go into a warm comfortable room before walking a short distance up the road to a very pleasant pub for dinner on a Sunday night (not always available in some places). The bed was very comfortable and our breakfast was nice, served by the pleasantly friendly owner. If we had had longer, and the weather better, it would have been lovely to sit outside on the terrace and get more of a feel of this obviously interesting old house. We noticed that newspapers were provided and the sitting room looked like a nice spot to relax in. The only thing I would suggest would be a bit of sprucing up of the bedroom furnishings (e.g. lamp shade was very tired) but these things are personal taste really. A nice stay in a very convenient location. More...

We stayed for an over-nighter on our way to London. The rooms are quite individual and decorated somewhat in the style of the names they are given, e. g. the Victorian Room or the Edwardian Room. The rooms were comfortable and quite well furnished, in an eclectic blend of styles. Some rooms have en suites while others have shared bathrooms and the prices reflect this. Rothmans offer excellent value for money. Breakfast is more than adequate, whatever your tastes, with cooked breakfast being ordered the night before for a choice of times in the morning. 5 December 2017

I booked this B & B because of the very reasonable price and location. I was very pleasantly surprised by the huge size of the Four Poster room, by the comfortable chairs, the quirky furnishings, and the huge television. The large window looked out over large sheltered garden. The breakfast was very good and surprisingly tasty.||Some down sides however. The en suite was tiny, but I suppose there's not much that can be done to expand it. Also it is a creaky old house, which means it can be a bit noisy when other guests walk past. And I didn't really enjoy have to tap in various codes for various doors.||On the whole I really enjoyed the unique quality of the building and would happily stay again.|| More...

We booked this property on Booking.com because we were travelling with our dog.||Free car parking was a bonus and we received a warm welcome from the owner Peter who showed us to our room. ||The house is an old property with creaking and uneven floorboards but this all adds to the character.||The room had TV, tea and coffee facilities, private bathroom, a very comfy bed with complementary bottled water and bars of chocolate - a nice touch.||Breakfast each morning was tasty and filling and because we stayed over a weekend was served at a good time - and check out on the Sunday was 11am - again perfect for us.||Would recommend to anyone wanting a relaxing weekend away - especially those with four legged friends who are made very welcome!|| More...

I stayed here for a few days a week, for 9 weeks, spread over many rooms. Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed staying here: Peter was very nice at all times (always willing to help with any problem I had), the breakfast was good (with a good selection of cooked foods to choose from, even for a vegetarian like me), and of course the rooms were nice. I would recommend looking at their website for pictures of the rooms, as they are very accurate (for example, the amount of space can vary from room to room). The beds were comfy, and there was decent wifi available in all rooms. An added nice touch was being allowed to use the microwave, fridge and cutlery whenever I wanted to! More...

Just had a two night stay at Rothmans whilst visiting relatives in the area. Initially chose Rothmans due to its location and that it was dog friendly. The house is absolutely beautiful with a lovely staircase and all period features. |Initial impressions of our room (The Regency ) was that it was rather dated and cluttered with a mix of modern and period furniture. Sometimes less is more! However, we quickly fell under the houses quirky charms and the room was warm, spacious with a lovely comfy bed. Breakfast was well cooked with quality produce and you simply help yourself to cereal, toast etc. It felt very relaxing much like home from home! The microwave can be used to heat your own food which was very handy as we were restricted where we could eat out due to the dog. |Whilst the code lock on the gate wasn't activated during our stay we wouldn't have been able to see the numbers in the dark so taking a torch might be a good idea!|I had been concermed about where to take the dog to go to the 'toilet' and the website should mention that there's a very large park only a couple of minutes walk away, ideal for the dog! All in all we enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again. Thank you.| More...

Comfortable, convenient, friendly and reasonably priced. The Georgian room provided my mother and I a home away from home for a week, while we visited family in Chelmsford and other parts of Essex.

Stayed here twice, one for a long course of 9 days/nights second for the last part which was 5 days/nights. Very happy with the service and the welcome. Very friendly but also left me alone to do what I needed to do. I was undertaking a course that meant I was drained physically and mentally, and being left alone was great for me! Breakfast was also good, felt very comfortable here, stayed in the Georgian and the Regency room, preferred the en suite with the Regency. If I wanted to be really picky I could say it needs some updating but for the price I paid with free wifi, free parking and breakfast included in the day and age of paying for every single thing I think this is a bargain. Comfortable clean bed. I'll definitely stay here again if I'm training in Chelmsford again. More...

I visited England and Belgium for a total six weeks and stayed in eight different Bed and Breafast establishments. I spent three weeks at Rothmans Bed and Breakfast. The old building and slightly eccentric but charming host may not be to everyone's taste but for me it was just brilliant. The house was an absolute joy to behold and I can see how the owner, Peter, fell in love with it. Peter was very patient, helpful and effortlessly oozed charm even when I blew the trip switch on one of the electrical circuits. The breakfasts were superb and the cleanliness was first rate. I would give this bed and breakfast 6 stars out of 5 if I could. Needless to say I would recommend it to anyone who wants to stay in an establishment with character and charm as opposed to a chain of bland hotels. I just hope Peter has a room available for me the next time I visit Essex. More...

I have stayed at this house before and so have my family. This time around (12th September) we had the Georgian room. I loved the new towels ( the towels last time were rough and these are obviously new), I loved the hot chocolate - must get some as nicer than the Cadburys one we buy ! I loved the small bar of chocolate each and the ice cold water - I like to drink water before bed time. I slept like a baby and enjoyed my breakfast. I didn't use the shower but my husband did and he had no problem with it. I left a comment that I would like a small bar of soap in the room with the ( brand new ) flannel, but this was a whim and not a complaint. I am quite fussy about where I stay and I like comfort but I also like quirkiness....so this place is me to a T. I have stayed in most of the rooms over time...but have my eye on the one with the double bed and the ensuite bathroom for next time ! It's an old house and it creaks which is pretty obvious if you look at the website before booking. It isn't expensive and I have never found it smelly or dirty - and I ALWAYS check bedding wherever I go ! More...

We stayed on Saturday 22 August for a night - to avoid the whole 'camping at V Festival' thing. ||From the moment of booking it was a great experience. Peter really does go out of his way to make your stay (however short) great. I loved the fact that Peter sent through door codes - thereby avoiding the whole hassle of getting there at a certain time to check-in. We just rocked up and let ourselves in, perfect. ||We stayed in the Georgian room - which is beautifully decorated. I liked the finishing touches (particularly the chocolate and water). You could describe some of the decor as quirky - but I thought overall it was fabulous.||Don't be fooled by the lack of an en-suite, you have use of your own personal bathroom down the corridor (with your own key).||Breakfast was really quaint - the Sunday papers on the big sofa, all manor of cereals and large 'sharing tables' so you really got to know your other guests. Cooked breakfast was served at 9am prompt - which I kind of liked as it felt like an occasion. ||all in all - would definitely recommend this fab little find. I thought it was gorgeous. More...

T
5 December 2015

I have stayed at Peter's now on 3 occasions and have always found that nothing is too much trouble and he is invariably on hand to help with any queries I might have. The house is 400 years old and has all the character you would expect from a beautiful place of that age. The quirkiness only adds to its charm. I simply cannot understand how many people have found the place to be dirty - they must spend half their stay on their hands and knees inspecting for dust. For myself, I want an comfortable bed, which I have always had, and a good breakfast. The breakfast room is lovely and Peter's breakfasts are superb and served on the dot. If one wants cereal etc., one should get down 10 mins before time. (I guess Peter could make that clearer). But overall, if one considers the price of most B&Bs in the area - and at a convenient distance from Stansted airport - the cost is extremely reasonable. If one is looking for a palace or even a Premier Inn, then expect to pay a hell of a lot more. Peter is kind, attentive and helpful (and I love the bar of chocolate he leaves in the room together with the tea/coffee tray. He is interested in people and therefore an interesting person himself. I would thoroughly recommend Rothmans every time. More...

I have stayed at Rothmans on three separate occasions in recent months. During that time, I have also stayed at many other similar establishments across the South East, as a change from the usual chain hotels. This hardly qualifies me as an expert, but I have to say Rothmans compares well with its peers. Perhaps that is because repeat stays tend to bring a sense of the familiar, but in any event the rooms are comfortable and spacious, the breakfast has great variety and is plentiful and nutrious, essential Wifi is complimentary and works well (which isn't a given in lots of B&Bs), and although the bathroom facilities are shared I have never "bumped into anyone else on the landing". I also like the fact that there's a decent pub but a short walk away serving decent food at the price point, and real ale! I will return again when in the area. More...

I have just read a couple of negative reviews for this bed and breakfast, and find it hard to believe these people actually stayed here,we bookes 2 rooms for one night while we were visiting the area for a wedding, and can honestly say we loved every bit of it from the charming building with the wonky floors to the owners perfect balance of friendlyness and professionalism,we were warmly welcomed from the time we arrived to the time we left, well done Peter.

A charming property and charming host. Just the kind of place I like to stay. It has bags of character, history, authenticity and a feeling of home. You won't get this experience with a national chain. More...

A charming property and charming host. Just the kind of place I like to stay. It has bags of character, history, authenticity and a feeling of home. If you gravitate towards the sterile impersonal experience of national chains, you're missing out. More...

A delightful quirky period house with a lovely lived-in feel, so different from multi-storey hotels with their identical rooms and unwelcoming atmosphere. The rooms are all different and have their own individual homely charms. Easy on-site parking. Generous breakfasts cooked to suit guests' tastes and the prices are very reasonable. I use Rothmans several times a year and have never been disappointed! More...

We booked on line, and after staying in the Thomas James in Leamington, were a bit bothered. The owner e mailed us his number and upon arriving, we rang it, and he met us at the car park. Helped us with the luggage, and ran over the security. Milk in the fridge for us to help ourselves (We both hate UHT milk) Room big clean and bright. Bathroom assigned to us across the landing, but you could sail the QE2 in the bath. Floors slope slightly, but the house is over 300 years old. Stairs both wide and easy to climb. Yes, we will use again if in the area. More...

I stayed on my own for 1 night prior to attending and exam early next morning in Chelmsford. As such I didn't see much other than the inside of my room and the bathroom and was unable to stay for the full breakfast. ||||The room was old fashioned and comfortable with just a single bed, wardrobe, desk, freeview TV and tea & coffee. I chose the smallest, cheapest room and found it perfectly accommodating for my requirements. The bed was exceptionally comfortable. ||||Bathrooms are not on-suite. However, the were two shower rooms with toilet plus a separate toilet available on my floor and this proved more than adequate. The showers could do with a descaling but otherwise clean and maintained. ||||I left before a cooked breakfast was available in the morning so cannot comment. However, there is a full range of cereals, cooked meats, bread, yogurt, cheese plus toaster, microwave and coffee machine available for a self service breakfast. A couple highlighted that the floor had not been cleaned since the day before, but otherwise all the plates and cutlery appeared clean.||||Parking is available next to the guest house. However, weekday daytime parking is limited.||||I found the B&B provided the facilities I required and I would stay again. More...

I stayed at the Bed and Breakfast for four weeks in April. I spent most of my time solo in the Edwardian room, but also enjoyed the Four Poster bedroom for a couple of nights with my girlfriend. ||||The house is beautiful with a large garden and plenty of facilities. There are three shared bathrooms, and some of the rooms have ensuites. Peter is an excellent host - welcoming and accomodating. ||||Edwardian:||||The Edwardian is a cosy room with TV, wardrobe and desk. It was everything I needed and I was quite comfortable. ||||Four Poster: ||||The Four Poster bedroom was very large and included an ensuite. I really loved this room and will be going back in the near future. ||||The house is kept clean and tidy and the breakfast is tasty. ||||You can tell from the variety in previous comments that this is not a typical "hotel" experience. What you get from Rothmans is character in a historic property that excudes a homely feel.||||I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates something a little different. I can also attest to it's suitability for long-stay accomodation. More...

I stayed in the Four-Poster room recently and was very impressed with the standard and quality of the stay. The room was traditionally decorated and furnished, with exposed beams and upright arm chairs that instantly made me feel welcome and cosey. The Proprietor, Peter, was enthusiastic and very warming, and made sure I settled into the room and understood everything I needed to know, such as the Breakfast schedule and other facilities on offer, like the use of the communal sitting room and full-size snooker room that was open for play to all guests. Although the Local shops and Pubs were certainly abundant in the village- not to mention inviting- my room had a large plasma TV and Sky, as well as an en suit and full tea and coffee making tray.||The breakfast in the morning was a full english and cooked ready for arrival which was a very unusual thing in most other places I'd stayed. I didn't have to wait and meant I could start the day faster and get into Great Baddow, a quiet and picturesque town.||The Bed was very comfortable and meant I had a very good nights sleep (I slept for 2 nights) and meant I was ready for the long trip home.||Overall, a very desirable place to stay of great value and comes highly recommended. This is the second time we have stayed at Rothmans as a precursor to the local V festival and a weekend of camping, and for the price you pay it's not as bad as is made out by some of these reviews. ||The building is old and has plenty of character, the breakfast is good and kept me going most of the day, you do have to make your own tea and toast but this is a B&B not a hotel so is this really a worry No.||We have stayed in the Regency room on both occaisions and it is more than adequate. We were surprised and pleased to find an en-suite on this visit which wasn't there last year and whilst it needs a few finishing touches, and again when you are only paying £33 each per night, it's really good value. The towels are rough, but there are signs that say help yourself to fabric softened ones if you would prefer, so I don't really see the problem. Peter is really friendly and, even though we arrived later than anticipated this year, made the effort to say hi.||We'll be back. More...

Stayed on business trip.400yr old building with beams. Room rather small but comfortable with TV and tea and coffee, but no en-suite. Breakfast good but served around one large table for 6 persons. Garden full of childrens toys from the adjoining nursery which is part of the hotel. Hotel hidden behind brick wall. More...
