Having a photograph taken sounds like such a simple thing. Point and click, and voila, a picture is created. It’s not as simple as that of course. A picture can capture moments in time, but can also make the subject feel vulnerable and exposed. It can show things we don’t necessarily like to face, or want the world to see. While I don’t concur with the Mayan belief that being photographed could result in the loss of one’s soul, I do sympathize with the discomfort that can come from being the focus of a camera’s lens.

For years, I made sure I was the one behind the camera, taking all the photos, in part so I could capture the memories, but also to make sure I wasn’t in the picture. For a long, long time, I wasn’t happy with what I saw when I looked in the mirror. The rare times someone did take a picture of me, I didn’t like it.

I recently went through a major health crisis, and although I hate to be clichéd, it literally changed my life, in more ways than one. I discovered that I had been sick for a long time, which led in large part to my being unhappy with how I looked but having no energy to do anything about it. It also made me realize that by avoiding having my picture taken all these years meant I would leave my family very little in the way of pictures of me, should anything happen.

Enter Rob and his camera. Rob’s been a co-worker and a friend for years. I knew about his photography work and had admired it greatly. His portfolio made it apparent that he had a gift for seeing beyond the obvious image, and a clear understanding of how to catch a moment that made a statement. It took a lot of courage for me to ask him to do a shoot for me, to help me get over not just my dislike of photos of myself, but to help me see myself as others see me, and recognize the changes I had undergone.

From the moment I suggested a shoot, his enthusiasm kept me excited instead of panicked. During the shoot itself, he put me at ease, and had me laughing when I might otherwise have cried. He used his knowledge and experience to try different poses, lighting, and angles. And I couldn’t have been happier with the results. For the first time in years, I have pictures of myself that I can honestly say I love.

He understands the toll not being ‘beautiful’ according to society’s standards can take. But he has the rare gift of being able to ignore those standards, and not only see but bring out the individual beauty of each person. I can think of no one else I would trust to bare myself to, literally and figuratively, with a camera in hand, than Rob.
