I am a verbal branding consultant, and contract to produce names and taglines for new products, businesses, and services, as well as a broad range of messaging and copywriting. I began this consultancy in 2007, after more than twenty-five years as a multi-genre writer, educator, and performer.

What do you love most about your job?
I love the vast variety of language challenges and solutions that naming and verbal branding allow me to dive into. In many ways I'm happiest working on a range of project types, with different approaches, styles, and goals, much more than working all the time in a singular voice and tone.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I was moving on from eight years of teaching college, and wanted a profession that was both more creative and challenging. An old friend suggested that I try freelance naming, and I was blown away by how engaging and fascinating I found it to be.
Why should our clients choose you?
I work using the full method and approach that a creative agency would use, so you pay a single consultant rather than a team for the same process. I keep on top of industry best practices, and I'm always straightforward about pricing, timing, best process, and my approach to any given project. I also never take on a project that I feel is outside my purview, and if I find that's the case, I'm happy to advise a client on the best type of consultant to reach out to.
Name Development
I can help you to find a strong, robust, and ownable name for your business or product using the best and current practices of the branding industry. This is essentially a pared-down version of what an agency would provide, in that you’d be working with one person (myself) rather than a team. Beyond that, though, it is a full naming process, which includes preparatory meetings, agreement on creative directions, development of a large master list of names, vetting to a shortlist with availability checks and rationales, and a final presentation with rationales and discussions of several names. The process normally takes two rounds, sometimes a bit more, depending on the industry and type of name that you’re looking for. This is a proven industry method that can take up to a few weeks, and it shouldn't be rushed if you want the best possible name. Your name in important! So put the appropriate work into finding it. That said, I can provide a bit of flexibility for smaller budgets and timelines, up to point. Contact me to discuss.
Beyond working on a single name, I can design nomenclature systems and provide naming strategy. I can also develop taglines, further messaging, and copywriting. See below for more information on these additional services.
Tagline, Headline, and Slogan Development
I create taglines, headlines, and slogans in a fashion similar to my name development. See above for details.
Messaging
I can develop and edit both internal and external messaging in various forms, from lists of raw ideas to full message house with proof point alignment, brand dictionary, word bank, and voice and style guide. We can discuss your needs to arrive at a level of service that will work best for you.
Fees for messaging vary according to the amount of work involved, and may be added at an hourly rate, or applied to an umbrella fee.
Copywriting, editing, and proofreading
I can provide spot-on copywriting as well as expert and meticulous proofreading and editing services at an hourly rate.
