I've lived in Basingstoke for several years now, and although there is a great selection of big-name, chain restaurants in the town, I'd struggle to name many independent eateries. In the top of the town area, the red lion is opposite the main post office, away from Festival Place. I can say that this is a superb spot for some lunch - the hotel puts on a buffet which costs I think £4.99 in the week and the food is absolutely superb! We've been in recently on a Friday and the choice was chilli, curry or fish and chips, as well as a selection of salad - and all three were fantastic (I obviously had the sample them all). The fish and chips in particular, complete with peas and tartare sauce, was nicer than if you were to buy it from a fish and chip shop, and if you ordered it in a pub. The staff are really friendly too, only too happy to help. £4.99! More...
