I trained under Shihan Cosgrove several years ago. He runs a top-notch studio (then & now). He is full of knowledge, and truly cares about his students. I remember during my training I had a surgery, and he called to check in on me at least once a week. Such a great instructor, and a fun place to train. . I have been training with Shihan Cosgrove since I was age 11. In my early 20s under his instruction I became the World Karate Organization Feather weight state champion and have gotten the opportunity to train with the worlds best ! I'm now 45 and have now had my own martial arts school (Red Dragon Karate Ontario) for 26 years ! Shihan Cosgrove is an awesome martial artist extremely knowledgeable, in awesome shape, and is there to make each student know he truely cares about there progress. Red Dragon Karate of Upland is a great Martial Art school for children and adults. Im very happy to recommend anybody to this particular dojo. Shihan and senseis work wonderfully with children and adults . They bring the best out of any pupils that they have. They are ALWAYS positive, respectiful, perseverance, patience and very informative with the students and parents. My children love this red dragon of upland. Ever since they've enrolled here,they have broken out their shells in school. They have projected their voices in school presentations ever since they became part of this dojo. We started our son in RDK past fall. We loved the warm welcome and received several free instructional classes before he joined the „Little Red Dragon Group“. Our son is extremely shy and he enjoys the special attention he received from the young Senseis, the initial one-on-one training and the constant encouragement. He is has grown in self-esteem and confidence in the time being there, made new friends and looks forward to his class every week. I have two children who love being part of Red Dragon Karate in Upland! My teenage son who, after years of dedication and hard work, has earned his first degree black belt! ! ...and a wannabe teenage :) daughter who started just a year ago. The classes and training have done wonders for both my kids. While they learn about and train in self defense, they also receive lessons in discipline and good behavior. The physical training and exercise that comes as a pure bonus! This is my son's sixth year at Red Dragon Karate in Upland. We joined when he had just started 6th grade. He wasn't into team sports (though we had tried several), and it was time to find something for him to latch onto. I wasn't sure if karate was going to be 'his thing'. It wasn't a large investment to try it out though, so we lunged into the 3 introductory lessons. To my surprise, he was hooked on the very first private lesson!! Since then, RDK upland has been a place where he found a place to learn self defense, where he gained confidence, learned to be more disciplined, and where he found an outlet from a long day at school. He has become a better student as a result. And, by volunteering back at the dojo, he is also learning to be a good teacher to others. My son & I have been at Red Dragon now for a couple of years. We started off taking the martial arts class, which is, mostly, Okinawan Karate with some Kung fu & Aikido thrown in. We slowly incorporated their sparring class into our schedule & THAT was a lot of fun. There were several intermediate & advanced students that we otherwise wouldn't have had a chance to train with. Getting a chance to actually spar with them was something not lost on me. Now, we're taking their kickboxing & fitness class & it's probably the best workout I've had in years. Tom Cosgrove is the Shihan (head instructor) & is a source of great information. He's a very patient man & can definitely help one achieve their goals, be it in fitness, martial arts, or both. He & the other instructors have a great touch with kids too. If you're looking for a different type of workout or are looking for martial arts training then this is your spot! More...

We have been affiliated with Upland Red Dragon Karate for 2 + years.  Our son loves the classes and Shihan Cosgrove has been a great instructor.  He is very intentional about having the kids learn discipline,  teamwork and respect as part of their instruction.  The senseis who work with the students are well trained and pay attention to the students.  The only downside to the RDK program in general is that it is pricey. On top of monthly lesson fees you are also expected to pay for uniforms,  multiple weapons,  registration fees with the American Karate Federation each time your child advances to the next belt color and entrance fees for tournaments that are available every few months. That being said,  the staff at Upland RDK is not pushy about selling you items.  They just let you know what is available for your child based on their progress and let you decide if you want to get it.  No hard sells here.  It is not the least expensive martial arts program,  but it does offer the most training opportunities for katas and weapons.  Shihan Cosgrove runs an excellent program and we believe the training and experience our son is receiving makes it worth while.
