About Purple Square Design Ltd

Purple Square Design was founded in January 2015 by Nicola Francis, who brings over 15 years experience providing award winning, bespoke digital design and development solutions for businesses of all sizes. We’re based in Thames Valley Park in Reading, situated alongside tech giants such as Microsoft and Oracle, and are only a short train ride away from London.

When working with Purple Square Design, you will work directly with our Founder and Creative Director, Nicola Francis, who will personally design and build your project from scratch.

Nicola Francis has worked in the digital design and development industry for over a decade, providing award winning digital solutions to a variety of businesses in a diverse range of sectors. These include healthcare, forex trading, journalism, property, events, education, technology, telecoms services, local government schemes and media/entertainment.

What makes a great website?

A great website is not only one which looks good, it's one which not only achieves the goals of the company, but also of it's visitors. A great website should be easy to navigate, have clear calls to action, and guide a visitor easily to where they want to be to ensure the best conversion rate possible.

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

I like to find out what the client's business does, a bit of a background on how they came to be, what their goals are for the project and their business, and how they ideally want to achieve these goals. I also like to find out where they feel their current website or mobile application is failing, and even look at specific analytics and user feedback to find out how their visitors are interacting with the website and if there are any specific parts of the user flow which are causing visitor drop off's to improve the overall user experience.
I also like to discuss any ideal timelines, or specific milestones which need to be achieved for the project to be a success for the client.

Describe your creative process.

Step 1 - Project Kick-Off Call
I believe having a good clear discussion before a project begins to find out in detail your goals, expectations and key milestones is an essential piece of the project’s success. Generally I allow for up to 2 hours for this call to ensure all questions are answered and a plan of action is in place
Step 2 - Creative Design / Reviews
Once the milestones and requirements have been set, I will begin on the UX and UI designs for the project. This could be anything from wireframes and user flow diagrams, to a full blown conceptual design depending on what was agreed on the kick off call. The designs will be sent to you as a PDF for proofing, and 3 rounds of amendments are included.
Step 4 - Development / Reviews
Once a design has been signed off, we will move onto the development (if required). This takes place within the Purple Square Design development environment and a link is provided for you to review. As with the creative design, 3 rounds of development review is provided.
Step 5 - Project sign off and delivery of files
When everything has been agreed with you and the project has been signed off, I will raise the invoice for the remaining balance, and will provide you with the files to upload or to get developed as required.

What information do you need from a client before you can start work?

Before beginning any project, there are a few things I will need to ensure everything kicks off smoothly:
1. Your 25% deposit
With every accepted proposal, I ask for an upfront deposit of 25% of the total project cost to secure the time. allocated to your project. This ensures your commitment to the project, and also covers the time for the initial concept design to take place.
2. Your client information form
This form is one which I email my clients to give me a brief overview of what you need in regards to the project. It also provides me with the contact information I need to easily keep communications active, and for billing reasons.
3. Your brand requirements
Details about your brand, colours, logos, images and fonts or brand guidelines which need to be adhered to in regards to conceptual designs.
4. Design examples
Examples of any designs you have seen which you would like referencing.

What do you love most about your job?

Nothing makes me more proud of what I do than to sit down with a client, work out where their current solution may be failing, and then putting my creative expertise to work to fix the problems they are having. Whether this is simply creating a clean and simple one page website which simply aids visitors in getting in touch, or whether it is a completely new user interface design for a mobile application to maximise downloads from the various app stores.
I also love working on websites or mobile applications which are seen to be helping people in some way. I have recently worked on mobile applications for both the healthcare sector and applications for environmental issues. Knowing I am contributing to the wellbeing of other people and our environment, makes me extremely proud of what I do.

What inspired you to start your own business?

Ever since a very young age I have been fascinated with technology and creative design. By starting my own business, this gave me the creative freedom to design and build anything, where anything is possible. I have worked for many different types of design agencies, as well as huge corporate tech giants within the digital design sector, and have seen how these companies can help people from all walks of life, from individuals starting out on their own journeys, to large businesses helping to promote a product which will help people in their every day lives. To say you were the one who designed and built the tools which contributed to their success, and the success of their users, was the driving force behind starting Purple Square Design.
