We are Punch Creative, an independent brand services agency. We formed in 2007 and since then have completed over 10,000 live projects, won awards, grown brands, bought a chapel that we now call home and developed into a team of 15 designers, marketers and digital specialists.
We help our clients grow awareness of their brand and engage their audience more effectively through our range of integrated brand services. What makes a great website?

Yes our websites look great, but they must provide a return on your investment and make a difference to your business. Its easy to produce a website that looks great. The trick is to provide one that makes a measurable difference to your business whilst doing so. We design and build websites on any scale from simple brochure websites to fully bespoke ecommerce systems that provide the core of your business infrastructure. Our websites integrate with any device they are being viewed on and are provided with full access to the content management system, which we also provide training on so you can update your own content if required. We also take care of your linked IT requirement and secure UK based hosting provision if that is also needed.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
Ideally there should be a conversation to establish a cultural fit between client and agency. Although we can work with most people, if there is no common ground then the relationship will not work for either party. We like to speak with prospective clients about their expected outcomes and longer term goals that are focused around the support we can provide. Our best client relationships are built on a shared understanding, good communication and positive working relationship.
Describe your creative process.
It may be that you have never worked with a design agency before. Even if you have, the process can often be confusing, expensive and littered with industry jargon.
When we started Punch we looked at the negatives that are associated with design agencies and considered how we could do things differently. A good design agency works in partnership with you, makes time to communicate with you properly and works openly and honestly. That is what we do well at Punch, and the work we produce is more effective as a result.
We have won and developed many client relationships through our creative ability, but this is only as important as the way we work with our clients. The best feedback we can get is our level of client retention, at well over 95% year on year it speaks volumes for our approach.

What information do you need from a client before you can start work?
Generally a project needs an outline budget to begin. That can come from our project estimate or it can be set by the client. We would also like a clear brief about the project deliverables and desired outcomes, however if a client has no experience of writing an agency brief we can help with that too. We don't that first stage to be too resource heavy on the client, so our experience helps us pick out the useful information from an initial project consultation which can be fed back to the client for approval.
What do you love most about your job?
I love the ability to work in a manner that I choose with people who I value. Our agency was founded by ex-colleagues and friends who came together with a shared ideology, to create an agency with a positive work ethic and a solid client bank who we enjoyed working with. Over the past 10 years we have achieved this and I enjoy coming to work everyday and figuring out how to meet our client briefs and overcome the challenges of running a small business.
What inspired you to start your own business?
Oddly a former boss inspired me to start Punch, purely by being the sort of person most people would choose not to work with! That working environment was negative, highly pressured, dictatorial and not enjoyable as a result. I wanted to be involved with something that would be fun to be a part of and grow a team who also enjoyed their jobs and could realise their own ambitions as a part of our company.

Creative design work is our favourite thing to do, I assume it is the same for any agency. Most of our creative design work actually begins with thinking…thinking and discussing ideas. Only when we have arrived at an idea that we are collectively happy with do we move onto the design stage. Often this will also involve further discussions with our client, it is often best to develop a new creative direction together. The design stage begins with big sheets of paper, which allows us to plan out the different parts of a creative project and how they relate to each other. Good creative work is only effective when it can be developed beyond the stage of a simple idea. For instance you might have a great campaign slogan, but how does that translate to a website, press advert or full marketing campaign? So, in short, good creative ideas need to be tested before we produce good creative design that will work for you!

There is no ideal approach to social media. People are constantly reinventing the rules for themselves so rather than try to recreate what has worked for others. Do what you are comfortable doing… An effective tweet could reach out to a lot of people, and drive a lot of traffic back to your website. A lot of Facebook or Youtube views could allow you to quickly and cheaply release a new product to market. A content rich Pinterest or Instagram page could show a potential client how creative your company is, and how exciting it could be to work with you. We specialise in growing your following, increasing engagement, social media advertising and making social media a key part of your overall marketing strategy. Most of all, the key to it is in the title ‘Social Media’…be sociable and be interesting so people take an interest in you. Be informative, helpful and insightful and most of all ‘tell don’t sell’ !

I am one of 3 owner / managers of Punch Creative. We started our agency in 2007 purely working in design for print. Since them we have developed our team and breadth of services to be a full service agency, providing our clients with a total brand marketing solution. Managing multiple suppliers with different points of contact can be time consuming, costly and lead to project creep. Our business model allows our clients to pick from a range of services or use a combination to deliver bigger projects or support provision where required.
