Myself and my 5 year old GSD, Finnick, have been attending Iains Scentwork classes for about 3 months now. We've also been attending the Sensitive Souls sessions to rebuild some of the confidence Finnick has lost around other dogs (since a nasty back injury left him feeling very vulnerable when other dogs approach him). I really wish we'd found Iain sooner! He has been exactly what we both needed. Iain is incredibly patient and his training ethics are COMPLETELY positive based and force free, which is something very important to me. The guidance and help he has given me has proved very effective and I can really see Finnick's confidence grow as we progress.....hopefully he will bloom back into the social butterfly he was previous to his back injury. I have no doubt that Iain is the right person to help guide us in the right direction! The Scentwork classes are brilliant, Iain has a natural calmness about him, which tends to rub off on the owners and dogs which creates a lovely and relaxed environment. Scentwork has been an amazing confidence building activity for Finnick, as well as being a great source of enrichment. The Sensitive Souls classes are equally as relaxed, but so incredibly helpful. I trust Iains guidance fully and he is always open to listening to any questions or hesitations. There is no pressure to hit milestones and there is absolutely no rushing.....the pace is set by each dog and their individual needs. Both myself and Finnick have gained a whole new confidence since we found Positive 4 Paws Dog Training & Behaviour. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend! More...

I recommended Iain at Positive4paws to my dog walking customer, because we were both experiencing her Labrador having severe fear issues, due to loud noises in November/firework night, to the extent she would refuse to leave the safety of her house, to go for a walk, refused to get in or out of the vehicle. (this had being going on for a couple of months). Iain worked with the lab's owner and myself, to build up the Lab's confidence, and to work with her owner so she could use positive reinforcement and confidence building exercises to help the Lab get over her fears and be more relaxed and happy in her home and out side the home. Over the months the lab became more confident and overcame her fears of loud noises. Now 3 months after Ian's help and guidance the Lab is enjoying her walks, going in and out of vehicles and ignoring any loud noises she hears while on her walks. I can highly recommend Iain. He is a very knowledgeable, kind, experienced, dog trainer and behaviourist. More...

Iain and his knowledge to help us with our dog has been amazing and in only a week of implementing the changes has made such a difference to our life and our dogs life, our dog had no mental stimulation or enough physical exercise and by making some very simple changes to his routine that were easy to do has made all the difference he is definitely more happy and can’t wait to do some more training

Q&As

I most love meeting the interesting individuals that are my clients. It brings great joy to know that in some way I have helped a family of humans and canines find a way to move forward in their relationships and start to enjoy their lives in a new way.

One of my families previous members was Ben. He was quite a confused boy when he arrive with us from rescue and my search for someone to help who used up to date methods was fruitless. So I decided to start studying animal training and behaviour so I was able to both understand his needs and help him to a more settled and happy life. Ben was a great teacher and will never be forgotten. This lead to a passion to help others to learn the methods to help their companions to understand and live in our everyday world.

As a animal trainer and working with behaviour I believe it is our duty to keep up to date with the methods used to help the clients that come to us for help. Science has made huge leaps in the past decade when it comes to understanding how animals learn and act. When the trainer and/or behaviourist is up to date with this information there is no need for forceful methods to be employed. Every year I attend many different seminars and work shops for both basic training and behaviour. All these insights allow me to pass the information to owners to help them understand their four legged companions to create a trusting bond between all.

Services

When your new edition arrive at home there is a lot of things that can develop quickly. Our dogs are always learning whether it is something we want them to learn or not. Consistency on our part is the key to an enjoyable start to a new life together.

Home starts are there to help you get off on the right foot, advice will be given on the basics of house training, food, and general good practices as well as starting basic training of sit, come and loose lead.

Private sessions at your home to help you with any basic training. These sessions are designed around your specific requirement and needs. These sessions cover the basic training behaviours like sit's, downs, stays and others as well as basic impulse control (manners).

Advanced training sessions are designed to build on the foundations of the basic training as well as teaching more advanced behaviours. These sessions cover: Reinforced Downs, Stand, Stays, Waits, Target Sticks, Shaping, Muzzle Training, Whistle Cues/Working at a distance and more.

These sessions can also help you if you are involved in Agility, Flyball, Rally or Obedience and need help to solve a particular issue you are coming up against in your training.

A walk being pulled around the park is no fun for anyone including your dog. Using proven methods you will be shown how to train your dog to walk with a loose lead and you will be shown some skills to avoid reinforcing the pulling behaviour.

The recall is probably the most important cue we teach to our dogs. It can save their lives as well as avoid many difficult situations once learned. Using fun to train methods I will show you how to build a solid recall that will also build the bond between you and your dog.

If a dog is displaying unwanted behaviours or aggression it can be down to a multiple number of factors and rarely is it just one singular object or trigger. A high percentage of these cases are born out of an underlying fear response of something within the dogs environment, which could be due to a lack of understanding and experience or a previous bad experience but is not limited to these. Working at your dog’s individual pace we will help them to understands its world from a different perspective and empower them to make alternative behaviour choices in their lives.

During this process you also to learn to manage their environment to minimise the unwanted behaviours being repeated and becoming habitual by using survival skills in everyday life. These skills will promote your dog’s learning without taking away their confidence. Dogs always repeat behaviours that have previously worked for them, it is our job to teach them alternative behaviour options using positive rewards like food, toys or life rewards to promote the new behaviours.

Scentwork Course for all levels. Following the Scentwork UK levels. From complete beginners and upwards, scentwork is a fun activity for both ends of the lead. Creating a team bond between handler and dog.
