Burnt end and brisket sandwiches we're awesome. So was the jalapeno cream corn. It'd be five stars if it had a better exhaust fan. It was a little smokey from the kitchen. More...

I've gone here a couple times now for lunch and their food is very good. The owner comes to the table every time I visit and makes sure everything is right and personally remembers people. I've tried the Cuban and burnt ends sandwiches, the mac and cheese, and the cornbread and everything is great. PS the Blackberry Habanero sauce is the best More...

First time visit. It was awesome! Burnt ends, ribs and brisket were the best I've ever had. Will definitely be back when I am in town again. Well I was back in town and you guessed it, I came back to get more burnt ends and ribs. I was not disappointed, everything was excellent just like the first time. Mac & cheese was awesome as well. Had a nice chat with the owner, a very engaging and friendly man. I hope his business excels and that he will still be around the next time I am in town! More...

They have the best brisket and the best coleslaw in town. I also like the ambiance of the place: it's a friendly joint with lots of good seating and a nice welcoming vibe. Eric, the owner, makes you feel right at home. And every time I've been there, the service has been great. It's also close enough to downtown and the university that it's an easy walk for lunch. Highly recommend. More...

I don't understand how there's even 1 bad review, this place was awesome. I've been smoking meat for close to 2 years, and in that time I've tried and been disappointed by every "high end" bbq joint I could find as it just wasn't as good as homenade. Pop's BBQ is the first place that I've found where I was genuinely impressed by the food, and the customer service may be the best I've had anywhere. And it is by no means "expensive" for a bbq joint, it's cheaper than you'll find at another place and the other's have lower quality food. We'll be back any time we're in the Iowa City area, I'd give more stars if I could. We had the ribs, wings, mac and cheese (a must-try,) and a pulled pork sandwich. All were great. More...

Excellent barbecue and a great daily deal that was appetizing to a new customer.Sauces were unique and tasty.Great if you miss the feeling of Texas BBQ. Bad: Sides are not the strong suit. Both potato salad and coleslow are underspiced. This is a chronic problem in Iowa.I recommend adding some onion and a bit of paprika.Regardless, super impressed. This place is Awesome! More...

I didn't think any BBQ place could beat jimmy jacks in the iowa city area but this place did. Pops has the most flavorful brisket and buttered bun around! ! They have awesome sides such as sweet potato fries, brussel sprouts (with Pops homemade mustard), and of course sweet cornbread! I would have given this place 5 stars but I do wish they would include sides with their meal options rather than a la cart style... Give this place a visit!! So good! More...

In my opinion this is the true bbq in Iowa city. There are many other places who seem to get away with large portions with not so good quality. Pops the 5 times I have been there has always had fantastic brisket and great sauces to go with it. I also always get the best sweet potato fries I have ever had. The reason I give it 4 stars is I wish servings we even just a tad bigger. I don't eat much but I often think I could put down two sandwiches and now you're talking quite a pretty penny. More...

Stopped in here for lunch yesterday. I ordered the brisket with no bread but got the sweet potato fries with ranch. SUPER! The brisket was moist and tender and the spicy sauce was real good. The x-spicy was a bit too much for my friend. He had the burnt ends with baked beans. He said the meat was excellent. Tender and juicy. The beans were a little sweet with pulled pork on top of a healthy helping. I would definitely return. More...

ATTENTION CARNIVORES and BBQ aficionados:Drop your second-rate smoked whatever and hie thee hence to Pop's. I warn you, I'm about to wax poetic. If you aren't interested, just go eat at Pops already. There are no 'wrong choices' to be had there.*First things first:Pop's deserves a much better rating than it has been given on Yelp. I dare say that those who've spoken poorly of their experience there either have an axe to grind, or perhaps they simply don't know good bbq from a busted old stump. Now, I mean no offense to anyone who may choose to share a diverging opinion, I only wish to respectfully offer that said persons are woefully incorrect. My mama would say FLAT WRONG. A sixth-generation Texan, I am (nearly)required by law to love, honor, and respect all things bbq. I come from a family full of world-class southern cooks and south-central Texas German/Bohemians who know a thing or two about bbq, from spits to pits. This food brought tears to my eyes. Blue ribbon, first-rate, top-notch BBQ here in the Great Plains. Pulled pork: spectacularly sumptuous with top-notch marbling. Burnt ends: excellent char and tender af. A true accomplishment.BRISKET: delicate smoke ring, gorgeous flavor, melt in your mouth texture. The Holy Grail of Texas barbecue done just a treat here in IC. Lord above, it's good. BBQ Cuban: worth everyone's time, I mean it. The hoagie alone got me emotional.BRUSSELS SPROUTS: YES TO THE YES YES. Crispy edges seared and perfectly tender, doused in herb oil. Mac& cheese: smoked Gouda and a few other friends in gooey pasta shells. Ain't no elbows in here. Just glorious.Fried pickle spears: I'll admit it, I was dubious of a good and crispy fry-up on the humble pickle spear, but I was wrong. Dead wrong. Breading well balanced with a satisfying and snappy bite back from the pickle.P.s. Some say good 'cue is best served without sauce. To each their own. But I'd step into oncoming traffic for the Rootbeer bbq sauce here, and it paired exceptionally well with the pulled pork. And the service was a delight. The very cool dude at the counter hooked us up with all the sauces they had on tap, and once he realized they couldn't accommodate our order of a half pound of burnt ends, he gave us what burnt ends they did have and topped that off with a full half pound of sliced brisket. This may be love.Y'all go on an' git down there. Some of the best BBQ north of the Red River, and quite likely THE best in the land of the Hawkeyes. More...

Gotta stop here! I had the pulled pork sandwich, and cauliflower with Ranch dressing. They have both indoor and outdoor eating areas. Girls- this is where the frat men hang out for lunch. Find yourself a stud to buy you lunch. ( Might happen -when pigs fly, or when the porker becomes a sandwich.) Staff is friendly- feel free to ask for free samples- won't happen unless you try. This building used to be a gas station, and has a few old pictures of what it used to look like. Enjoy! More...

How did I not know that the best BBQ in Iowa City was hidden in a cute little red shop? I'm not sure, but I'm down to spend some visits making up for lost time.
