Late booking (15:30 for a 18:30) table for 3, including an older child. Arrived early to have a drink in the bar before sitting in the restaurant. Poet's House Fizz for the adults, soft drink for the child. The Cocktail Menu is quite extensive and worth a look at even if not eating in the restaurant. As always the service was excellent, even with a supervised/trainee waiter in the restaurant. We had a wonderful evening celebrating our son’s GCSE results. The dining room was quiet, beautifully decorated, extremely clean and with the separate areas, it feels private without being closed away. Suitable for romantic evenings or large parties. One of the very best places to eat in the region, with superb dishes. Each item on the plate is clearly well thought out and compliments the rest of the dish and each ingredient looks and tastes fresh and of excellent quality. The drinks are of equal quality, with a great wine menu and the cocktails are out of this world great! Atmosphere and decor lives up to the high standards of the food and drink too. Can't fault any of the above, really is perfect. Only real negative is the service. The very young (likely 18 on minimum wage) waitress was trying, but clearly lacks experience and was woefully out of her depth. This was a real let down I'm afraid and is a stark contrast with the rest of the experience as above. A side / minor issue... They don't take American Express! Small thing, but very surprising for this type of establishment and rather disappointing. I'd go back again in the future, but if the service was just as poor that'd be my last time to be honest. I'll also be nagging about the AMEX as that's a big thing for me personally. For great good, drink and atmosphere this place is perfect. Just don't expect the same from the service where I suspect management have gone cheap and found the best waitress they can who's willing to take £6.15 an hour (18 - 20 year old min wage) More...

We were celebrating a special birthday & the restaurant was perfect for that, lovely decoration and the setting is lovely. The staff was very attentive and did a birthday cake too. We were all happy with our food choices, maybe a few more vegan options would be welcome. The restaurant is within walking distance of the stunning Ely Cathedral. Very good central local, and the external building is stunning, food was good, menu and wine list of a good standard, service was good and professional but the Resturant and bar is short staffed no fault of the waiting staff they kept it going, this place could be amazing with a few more staff, well worth a visit, we will visit again thank you to all the staff

We had a lovely meal at the Poet's House. The staff were extremely attentive and even brought us a glass of prosecco on the house as it was a special occasion - My mum was visiting me after having surgery. We really enjoyed the meal and the relaxed atmosphere in the bar and restaurant. The cocktails were very tasty! The meal was really nice and presented well, but the menu options were quite easy, considering the prices. I wouldn't really consider it a la carte.
