I've been doing 1:1 personal training with Sandor at PFP for almost two years. He is probably the best personal trainer I have ever had, and I've tried a lot. He is a stickler for good form, understands physiology really well, and thoroughly explains how to go through a movement and what it should be working. He's also good about knowing your personality and what you need from him as a trainer. He has a passion for fitness that's infectious, and truly cares about his clients. I have been working out at the Pittsburgh Fitness Project since August 2018. It is a great gym with abundant space, especially for those who prefer to exercise with free weights and using their body weight. Additionally, the gym offers various classes with trainers, who are also available for private training, from workouts concentrating on different parts of the body to yoga sessions. The trainers are professional and extremely knowledgeable in their field. My trainer, Sándor, has helped me lose 24 pounds so far, while concurrently build muscle and physically become more toned. The Pittsburgh Fitness Project is also in a convenient location with available parking, which is a big plus in Pittsburgh. This gym offers a variety of classes including open gym hours and personal training. I have done the "PFP Burn" class several times. It is a tabata style workout (20 seconds of exercise, 10 seconds rest) alternating between cardio and strength training. The class takes about 50 minutes. I've always had Marisa as my instructor and she is nice and very helpful! This gym is pretty big and has a lot of different equipment. I first came to Pittsburgh Fitness Project (PFP) three months ago, a little unsure and apprehensive due to a previous so-so experience with personal trainers at another gym. I'm sure many of you have had the same kinds of experiences: being treated like just a number at a huge gym? Having a trainer who neither solicits nor listens to your feedback? Not receiving the additional support that you need to meet your goals, such as info on nutrition or recovery?

Let me state it loud and clear - PFP is NOT that kind of gym! The trainers are professional, well-educated, and genuinely interested in your fitness goals and your progress in meeting them.

My trainer, Tonja, creates individualized workouts for me and is continually challenging me and pushing me *just* past my comfort zone. I work with her for 45 minutes twice a week, and I am constantly reminded of my progress in the mirror and in what I can accomplish in the gym. That puddle I could barely jump over when I came here? Now I'm doing 18" box jumps. The weighted sled that I struggled to pull across the gym? I just pulled one weighing 300+ pounds!

In short, I love it here. I'm thankful that I took a chance on them and encourage you to give it a try, too. If you truly want to invest the time and effort into being a stronger, healthier version of yourself - PFP is the place to be!

Full disclosure: I have a gym membership at Gold's and I never thought I'd be into going to a gym that offers a variety of classes like PFP does. I was wrong! I think a lot guys think the way I did before I attended classes at PFP. I still have my regular gym membership, but I thoroughly enjoy attending classes at PFP to switch up my routine.

Tom and the rest of the staff are engaging, friendly, welcoming and really care about pushing you to maximize results. I've really enjoyed the strength and circuit trainings that we've done. Kettlebell swings, sled pushing, pull-ups, bear crawls, deadlifts, abs, and more in a circuit training style will really get you shredded in a hurry!

I recommend going with a friend to your first class to give it a trial run. You most likely will be back after your first class! If you're worried bout pricing, there are some very affordable groupons available.

Where to start? This place is perfect- clean, spacious, and welcoming. The trainers are amazing- knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. The small, structured classes are, as I quickly learned, exactly what I needed to be motivated and push myself harder and more consistently than I ever could have imagined. I have been wasting money for half my lifetime “donating” to gym memberships and dreading every second spent “exercising” with no results. PFP provides a free personal assessment, a free first class, and several affordable options to get started. I’ve never felt more comfortable, motivated, and confident, and I encourage anyone at any fitness level to give it a try. You won’t regret it. More...
